《Silent Luna》Sixteen

The floor creaked and my eyes flew open. I sat up in a rush, ignoring the the brief flash of pain, and looked around wildly. It was still dark in the room, and I was still lying on top of the covers, how I'd fallen asleep.
My eyes flickered around the room trying to find anything in the black until they focused on Scary Guy. Wait, I recalled Jaycee saying I was in Kota's room. Kota. That was his name, I needed to remember it.
Kota stood frozen in the doorway, a tiny bit of light from the hallway illuminating him. Slowly, he pushed the door open a little more, as if he knew I could only barely see him as he was.
He lifted his hands up, as if surrendering to me and whispered, "Hey, sorry I woke you up. I was just coming to get ready for bed." He seemed shy, like he wasn't sure how I was going to react to anything that came out of his mouth.
My head dipped in a tiny nod, but my eyes were still wide as saucers as they followed his path around the room. He disappeared behind a different door for a few minutes. When he came out, he didn't seem any different in the dark, but I'm assuming he changed clothes.
He walked across the room until he stood next to the bed I lied on. A small squeak escaped my mouth, but I didn't shy away.
"Here, why don't you get under the covers."
I just continued to stare at him, not moving. I still felt like I was intruding his personal space. I mean, this was his room, so shouldn't he want me to move so he can go to bed?
He sighed and put his arm around my back, easily lifting me into the air. He pulled back the comforter and sheets before laying me back down. He pulled the covers back over me.
"Go back to sleep." Kota told me. "I'll be in the room across the hall, okay?"
I nodded, still baffled at the fact he was leaving me in his room on his bed while he's going to take a different room. I kept my eyes on him as he walked across the room to a couch and grabbed a couple blankets from a chest next to it. Shuffling out the door, he looked back to give me a soft smile before he closed the door all the way. Left back in the dark, I rolled over and tugged the covers under my chin, closing my eyes and falling back to sleep.
This time when I opened my eyes, the room was bright. I sat up, wincing a little as I took deep breaths. I looked around and realized I never took in the room yesterday when Jaycee and Eva brought me here. The bed I sat in was placed with the headboard against the wall opposite the door, but placed more towards the corner. Across from the bed was an entertainment center underneath a hanging tv. On the other side I saw a stone fireplace with a bookshelf on either side. A couch, a chair, and a coffee table filled the space in front of them. On the far wall from where the bed was stood a door in each corner. One must be a closet, the other a bathroom. All of the windows were on the wall opposing the entrance door, the fireplace, and the tv. The most surprising part of the beautiful room was the fact it was tidy and put together. Not what I would expect from a teenage boy.

I pulled the covers off and climbed out of bed, nearly collapsing when my legs buckled a little. I steadied myself and tried again, heading for the door Kota went last night. Opening it, I found a ginormous closet, holding shelves and cloth racks and two dressers. One side of the space was stuffed full, Kota's clothes organized on their hangers and folded neatly on the shelves. In contrast, the other side was completely barren. Opening one of the dresser drawers, even that was empty. Odd.
Leaving the closet, I headed past the seating area to the other door, this one next to the wall of windows. Swinging the door open, I stepped into the bathroom.
Not only was it a bathroom, it was beautiful. And also ginormous. The bathtub was separate from the shower. The tub was up against a wall with a gorgeous stain glass art above it. Small, round jets were on the bathtub wall. A lovely two person sink sat to my right with a pretty, detailed countertop. The mirror above the sink stretched across the entire wall. The only thing that looked normal was the toilet. It sat away in a corner, looking very cozy there. Everything else was grand and gorgeous, even the floor tile.
I shut the door, did my business, and washed my hands. By the time I was done, I was already tired again. I hated that I was so weak, even the little things like using the bathroom drained me. I opened the bathroom door and started walking back towards the bed, this time admiring the windows. Because I was paying close attention, I noticed two of them weren't just windows, but doors. I quickly found the latch and they swung open, hitting me with a rush of cool autumn air that swirled into the room like it had its own personality.
Lifting my lips into a smile, I stepped out onto the balcony and walked to the railing. Leaving against it, I admired the view and realized this was the balcony above the porch and front door. From here, I could see the driveway path as it curled around that little tree in the center. And the front gate that actually didn't have a gate. It was just a short brick, decorative wall that separated for the drive. Big trees prevented me from seeing farther to the end of the stone, but we were surrounded by forest in all directions. On the far side of the circle drive, I spotted the path I ran from yesterday that leads to the doctors.
A soft click sounded behind me and I turned to see Kota had entered the room and stood watching me with bright eyes. His dark hair was slightly tousled and he was dressed in sweats and a t-shirt. It seems he had just woken up as well. In his hands was my box, the one I'd been so worried about, and everything else dissolved from my mind.

I gave a relieved smile and ran over to him, taking the box out of his hands. I kneeled down on the floor and took off the lid to find all my pictures, the letter, and the necklace were untouched. Jack hadn't discovered it after all!
I placed a hand over my heart and rolled back on the floor, staring at the ceiling. I was finally able to relax my anxiety.
"That's a cool necklace." Kota suddenly spoke up, reminding me of his presence. I sat back up to see he was holding the wolf pendant on his fingers, admiring it. "Did your mom give it to you?" I nodded, how did he guess? "Do you want me to put it on you?"
I lit up and immediately lifted my hair. He laughed and sat down on the floor behind me. His laughing died almost instantly and he froze.
I turned to see what made him hesitate and saw him glaring at my neck.
"Eirenae, what happened to your neck?" He asked slowly. But to his credit, his voice was soft.
Confused, I touched the spot he was staring and winced. Immediately, I let my hair fall, covering the spot. Kota had seen the marks Jack left on my neck a few days ago, when he'd choked me.
My mind said get out of there, he's going to get upset. I didn't want to explain in any way, so I shot up and, forgetting about the necklace, made a break for the door that led to the hallway.
Kota was a faster, though. He wrapped an arm around my waist, holding me to him.
"Eirenae, stop." He said gently. "Calm down, I'm not going to hurt you." I stilled and turned around, gazing into his beautiful green eyes, my own filling with tears.
Instantly, his gaze softened and his grip slackened. Good to know I had that effect on him. "Hey," he whispered. "It's okay. Whatever happened to you is over, you're safe here. I didn't mean to bring up any memories."
I gave a timid nod, letting him believe that's what made me upset and trying to blink back my tears. He pulled me in and hugged me, surprising me by burying his face into my neck. After a few moments, I pulled back, my eyes clear again.
He smiled down at me, "Are you hungry?"
My stomach tightened, because when he said that, it reminded me that I haven't eaten in who knows how long at this point. I could hold off the hunger until I let myself feel it. I bobbed my head and Kota scooped me up. Shocked, I stared at him with wide eyes, but nevertheless let him carry me. He laughed at my expression and started out the hallway and down the many stairs. They should get an elevator for this place, it would be so helpful!
Reaching the kitchen, he set me on a barstool. "Here, before I forget." I twisted to look up at him and he had my necklace in his hands! Without moving my hair, he clasped the chain and let it drape overtop. When he moved around the counter, I lifted my hair so the metal touched my neck and dropped my hair back over to cover the marks.
Resting my chin in my hands, I watched him get ingredients out for whatever he was planning. Although it struck me funny that he was going to make the food himself; in a house like this I would think there was maids and butlers waiting on them. But maybe not, these people didn't seem rich until I saw where they lived.
Kota tried to talk to me as he cooked, but it ended up being a more one-sided conversation. "So I know your name is Eirenae, but how old are you?"
I held up ten fingers, and then seven.
"Seventeen?" He guessed. I smiled and nodded, and he smiled back. "I'm eighteen, but just barely. But you're a senior, right?" I nodded again. "So you have to be turning eighteen soon." I nodded again. "When's your birthday?"
My eyes darted to the ceiling as I thought of how to tell him. I turned back to him and held up ten fingers.
"Ten? As in tenth month?" I nodded. "So October. . ." I held up ten fingers again. "Ten. October tenth? That's like, next week!" I smiled and nodded. "Do you want to have a party?"
My eyes stretched wide. I didn't know if I wanted a party. Parties had a lot of people, with me as the center of attention: a place I hated. So I shrugged and looked down.
Kota chuckled. "Okay, I won't plan one for you, I'll just have to convince Jaycee to not plan anything." I smiled nervously. As far as I knew Jaycee, once she knew my birthday was soon, she would stop at nothing to make it a big deal. And without my voice, it was going to be so much harder to tell her no.

Blaze
The story of a fire elemental's life in a world dominated by mages. He will have to learn how to manage betrayals, treachery, and maybe even love as he goes on adventures to find a meaning to it all. From dark, humble beginnings he will rise... or fall, devastating amounts in his journey across the world. Hello, Author here! I am, unfortunately, rather terrible at coming up with descriptions that seem to have the right amount of decorum and yet actually serve their function of adequately describing the story, so here's the coursenotes. - The story follows a fire elemental. (As you can tell from that, it is heavily besed on fantasy with mages and the like. Technology will not feature prominently) -As mentioned in the tags, this will have game-like aspects. (E.G. levels, stats. I will be trying to put my own twist on this notion however, so bear with me if the premise intrests you but you despise LitRpg) -It'll get rather dark, but not devastatingly so. (I'm trying to write a more complex story so it will have its dark moments, the prologue being one of them. Rest assured the whole story will not be this dark, though I'll make sure that no-one is a saint either) -The protagonist/protagonists will not be a Mary-Sue. (The plural will be understood when I'm further into the story. They also won't be impossiby unlikeable such as those in many Light novels.) -There is no prophecy (Anyone who says there is, is lying, trust me.)

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
