《Mine to Protect (Completed)》Chapter 62

Sophia's POV
Vlad, Knox and I jumped as the voice drew our attention behind us. Slowly standing we faced the most powerful witch in history. My grandmother. To look at her you would not think she was a day over 40. She really was quiet beautiful with a warm smile that is if you don't take in to account her being a merciless killing machine.
As she approached us, Vlad and Knox surrounded me. She was only about a foot away before she sprang into action...
...and hugged me?
Confused I looked over to Knox's own confused expression.
"Um..."
Squeezing me one last time she leaned back. "Sorry about that dear, my emotions seemed to get the better of me. Now let me take a look at you."
I stood there dumbfounded as she pushed my hair from my shoulder and cupped my cheek.
"You have grown up to be a very beautiful woman. It is uncanny how you look so much like your mother. Oh fuck...your poor mother." My mother's death must still haunt her. Knowing that with her magic she could have saved her from the cancer. A thought that I have had several times since I came into my powers.
Without another word she sprinted off down the hall pausing first at Brian's body.
"He is dead, sorry to say I would have enjoyed killing him as pay back for the last several decades. Come, we need to hurry."
Without thinking I sprinted after her, with a very pissed off vampire and shifter on my heels.
Mae blasted through a door after several turns and ran down a set of steps. This place was a fucking maze on top of being humongous. Who the hell needed this much room? At the end of the hall we came across another door with symbols engraved into the top of them. Mae stopped short of opening it, just standing there staring.

"Um Mae what is going on..."
"I can't open it. The magic engraved into the door prevents me from opening it. I need...I need you to open them."
Shooting a look over to the guys I raised my eyebrow in question. Vlad shrugged his shoulder, just as curious as to what the hell was going on.
Taking a deep breath I pushed the doors open with my magic, breaking the lock easily. Well you know what they say, curiosity killed the cat. Hope that doesn't apply to wolves as well.
I expected us to enter a room, but I couldn't be more wrong. After a short hallway we entered what appeared to be rows of cages. And each cage was occupied. Where the fuck were we?
"This is their dungeons so to speak. Although when the Council used them, no one really stayed here very long. Brian started using them without their knowledge about 20 years ago. Besides being completely insane he really was very powerful and clever."
Shocked, we walked further down taking in each cage. Mae was disenabling the locks of each cell we passed. When she reached a cell that held a petite woman she stopped.
"Fairy there is another of your kind up in the hallway. She is still alive. Help her."
Without waiting for a reply the young girl ran out of the room, a few others followed. No one in the room seemed to fear Mae and I was confused as ever, but still refused to let my guard down. They all thanked her when she set them free.
"Why are they all here?"
"Easy...they had something that Brian wanted. Magic. What you did upstairs to him...draining one of their magic. It is what he has been trying to do for years. Luckily, I do not possess that gift so I was unable to help him. That didn't stop him from trying. So until he got it right, he kept them all locked up so when the time came..."

I was going to ask why they didn't use magic to escape and then I noticed more symbols were engraved on top of each cell.
"He used magic to bind them. They could fight back..."
It was more of a comment than a question. I could feel Knox's anger as we passed each cell containing yet another prisoner. Finally Mae stopped at a closed metal door. Again markings were written above it. She stepped aside motioning for Knox this time.
"Please do not use magic. You will have to break it open."
Nodding Knox and Vlad stepped forward, each grabbing the metal bar on the door and pulled until the door broke free of it frame, tossing it to the side, the men moved back allowing Mae to enter.
Rushing Mae shot forward searching the tiny apartment. It looked like someone lived here but who would live locked in an apartment? In a dungeon?
Knox and Vlad both took up there normal positions by my sides as we watched Mae open each door yelling out Hello.
Who was she looking for? It didn't seem like anyone was here since there was no response.
A voice finally responded. Gripping onto each of the guys I watched as Mae opened one last door.
I knew that voice...

8 132The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
