《Regulating Miracles》(4-0) An Observation on the Taboo (Kamiya Kanon)
They say that everyone with an augmentation is bound to break society’s rules. That one day we’ll commit the taboo. When I say ‘they’ I’m not referring to anyone specifically, in a way I’m referring to everyone. It would probably be harder to find someone who doesn't think that way, although there are plenty of differing reasons.
Those who put their faith in science believe it’s a physical result of overcrowding in the skull. The temporal lobe of an augmented will grow to be substantially larger than that of a normal human. Apparently that’s part of what allows us to interact with the information dimension. And since our skulls aren’t any bigger this puts added pressure onto the other areas of the brain, especially the frontal lobe. They think that overcrowding causes us to have poor reasoning skills, and makes us prone to take rash actions without considering the consequences.
Psychiatrists believe it’s the result of our ego’s running wild. We live our lives with power most couldn’t comprehend. We can change this world to our liking and ignore the rules of the universe. It’s no surprise they think we all develop god complexes. They think we’ve stopped seeing ourselves as human. Living life only beholden to our own whims. They think that line of thought causes us to have poor reasoning skills, and makes us prone to take rash actions without considering the consequences.
The general population believe it’s because we’re monsters. They see our stigmas and assume we’re demons who’ve abandoned humanity, no different from an aberration. That might be a poor choice of words. It’s not as if they all hate us, but it’s undeniable that they see us as different. We’re a tool, a weapon, a cure, a liability. They see us as so far removed from humanity it’s easy to accept that we have poor reasoning skills and are prone to take rash actions without considering the consequences.

So, who’s right? Probably all of them. Although they all ignore the most important reason. The reason most augmenteds would give when confronted with this issue.
It’s because we’re human. We’re nothing more than humans given the power to do as we please. The inevitability of augmenteds committing the taboo is merely a result of giving humans a power they were never meant to have. For better or for worse, we’re no different from the rest of humanity. And sometimes people have poor reasoning skills, and sometimes people take rash actions without considering the consequences. But whenever you can kill another human with nothing more than a thought, each mistake, every misstep becomes a lot more noticeable.
That’s why it’s all the more important that we live exemplary lives. That might seem rich coming from someone in my line of work, but even in an unsavory situation there are appropriate ways to handle things. As inexperienced as I am I’ll certainly have trouble finding them.
Still, I’ll look.
I’ll struggle as pathetically as I have to in order to reach the correct way of finding redemption.
Not for myself.
For all the people I’ve already inconvenienced.

Sweet Minds
"No one can see it, some can feel it, and only the few can use it. We belong to the few." Marith Merryfield felt anything but merry that morning. She found herself waiting for a delayed train on a deserted platform, in the freezing cold of the Dutch autumn. Just when the strangeness is making her consider turning around and going back home an empty train rolls into the station. For reasons unclear to this day she decides to get onboard. An unlikely, and quite impossible, train accident is about to hurtle her into a world she had always suspected existed. It was a dark and absurd place she had rejected and suppressed when she was young. Now she would need that dormant part of herself to survive. After a brief hospitalization she must choose between two continents and finds herself reluctantly boarding a plane to Oregon to be reunited with her shadows. She returns to the town she grew up in, which is where her father still lives and her childhood memories linger. By the end of the week the mysterious train accident turns out to be the least of her problems. Her life was never supposed to become this serious this fast. Through an improbable and unfortunate series of events she is soon introduced to a motley crew of characters that appear to be carrying the same struggles through life. They possess a familiar sense of inadequacy and insecurity. Marith realizes that for the first time in her life she has found herself a tribe, or, as they prefer to call it, a Chain. She is introduced to a world of Prophets, Runners and Mages led by an Oracle and a Watchmaker. Over the course of several weeks Marith learns that, together with her Chain, she is expected to save this fabric of reality, by fighting a mysterious and immortal creature and his aggressive pet. In order to have a chance at overcoming this force of nature she has to revisit the darkest and most desolate corners of her mind. ***** The total word count of the first 12 chapters amounts to about 85.000 words. The total word count of the first 30 chapters will amount to about 225.000 words. My chapters range, roughly, from 5.000 to 10.000 words. Twoen
The struggle for an interesting game has been the story of my life for quite some time. Every game I find is either too easy, not interesting or too short. Luckily, my two brothers who match my level of skill, albeit in different areas, tend to spice things up. When I look at my older brother I have no idea how he gets anything done when he's such an idiot. Still it doesn't detract from my respect for him as a gamer, though maybe a little. When I look at my younger brother I marvel at the monster that my older brother and I created. Deadliness, craftiness and quiet, both in what he does and how he is. When it's just us three we tend to destory everything in our path. So normally we tend to compete rather than team. Although that isn't to say we're just good as individuals. When we work together our effectiveness multiplies rather than lowering. Well enough about us dorks. Anyway a new VR game came out, apparently in development for quite some time. Of course my older brother decided to drive out and buy three copies. What would this one be missing? Difficulty? Depth? Length? In any case I plan to reach the top before my brothers do. It was a competition after all. Twoen had all three things I normally yearn for in spades. Something I did not foresee. A keeper
