《Chaos Realm; A VRMMO Tale》13. Side business is always welcome

There were too many cubs running around. To the players, cubs were an essential part of their battle prowess. Tamed animals had powerful boost skills and attacks, which added to the abilities that players owned. Besides cute pets and pet fashions too was a prominent industry within the game.

The wolf cubs ran around the place. Gene didn't hesitate. She killed them off as well while she waited for the wolves to respawn. The wolves gave 10 experiences each which was nothing compared to that she required to level up. After a couple of minutes, the wolves slowly respawned which too was slaughtered by Gene.
After countless times of repeated harassment from Gene, a few mutated wolves started to spawn. Most monsters had corrupted and mutated variants that had very low spawn chances. Gene was excited to see these bigger wolves. Most variant monsters gave a considerably larger experience.
[Mutated Shadow Wolf LVL 5]
The creatures were more powerful than those regular ones and Gene was forced into the defensive. Their agility was slightly higher which made it a little cumbersome for any plate armour player let alone someone with very low strength like Gene. Thanks to the high vitality she had, Gene was able to hold on to the collective attack from the pack and soon the attacking wolves left again for the netherworld. And that's when Gene found one of the most sought after pets in the region.

Gene's eyes glistened looking at the extraordinary cub that spawned. It would have been better had it been a corrupted cub but considering how difficult it would be to kill a pack of corrupted wolves, these were the best she could hope for.
Every player could capture cubs using a spirit tool but the ordinary ones had a very low chance of success. Gene had no choice but to use the one she had. After the attempt, the cubs usually died making this a highly risky move. Besides, the more rare a cub was, the lower the chances of success were.

Gene used her spirit tool attempting to catch the little guy. She pointed the flare-like stick at the cub and it immediately ejected a magical net that restricted the cub's movements. A progress bar appeared on top which slowly started to fill.
'Please succeed, please succeed…' Gene kept praying. The progress bar kept filling slowly. The cub started resisting with vigour. The results were as expected.
Failure.
The cub immediately died leaving behind sparkles.
Level Up.
This was the first time Gene regretted seeing such a message. She made up her mind and immediately left the pasture to the only store in La-Dalia. She was urgently in need of spirit containers that could store the captured cubs. Considering how long she'd be stuck in the pasture with the wolves, she was bound to run into a few more mutated wolf cubs.
Gene wasn't interested in wasting money. She knew how hard it was to get money as a beginner. Once she purchased all the items, Gene returned to the wolf pack and continued to kill them.
After a few packs were done in, two mutated cubs spawned.

Growth Rate: 78%]
The spawned cubs were perfect. 44% wasn't bad but one of them had 78%. This was godly to the players out there. The higher the growth per cent, the better the overall attributes of the pets will be. There was still no secure way to know what the stats would be until they were fully tamed.
Excited, Gene used her spirit tool to try and capture the one with higher growth potential.
1...2...3…
The progress bar kept rising and the cub struggled stronger.
32...33...
Failure!
Seeing the little monster die under the spirit net made Gene's heart bleed. She had one more cub to try her luck on.

Another wave of the love stick and the process was repeated again.
23...24…
Gene anxiously started biting her nail and started cheering the struggling cub?
45...46...47…
The progress broke previous records. But it had yet to be completed. The struggle became more and more violent and the net started to rip.
67...68…
Kneeling right next to the struggling cub, Gene started to pray to who knows what gods out there.
99...100
Success!
"Phew!"
The cub slowly got up and became docile. Gene immediately transferred the cub into the newly bought storage cube and stored it in the inventory. The cub was to be taken to a tamer player or NPC before they could be tamed. Gene had no reason to keep the cub as a pet since she was confident she could get much more powerful pets in the future. Her interest was merely to earn a little something on the side.

Skill: Shadow Mark]
Shadow mark was a dark attribute ability that helped to stealthily follow another creature using its shadow. The stronger the beast, the longer the stealth lasts.
With a precious commodity worth 200 gold coins in her inventory, Gene continued to kill the wolves that had already spawned. Sadly there weren't any other valuable cubs and Gene went into a slaughter fest.
By the time Gene was done with levelling up, she had already caught 2 wolf cubs of the 33 that she attempted to catch. Her gains weren't bad considering how hard it was to catch these novel wolves. She left for Olahal immediately after marking the quest completed at the reception.
After listing the two cubs for auction, the tired Gene left the game to grab some cola. After a little rest, Gene went back to her bedroom and slept.

Welcome to the Upward Bound System, V.2
Technically abandoned. I will be reposting an updated version of the story one chapter at a time. When the System came to Earth, it changed everything. It is a grand thing used by gods and men alike. What had once been fantasy was now a reality. People believed and so that belief gave ideas the strength to manifest. "Welcome Founder of the SCP Foundation" It stirred the gods from their deathly slumbers. Stirred by an almost mechanical voice promising them new life, and followers as countless as the stars. All it asked of them was for their help. Help with what though? The old gods, the forgotten gods, and the new gods drew breath, and then made their voices heard. On a day like any other Dante was home from college watching the Presidential inauguration with his parents. Little did they know that this day would turn out to be anything but ordinary. That this was the day everything changed. Dante is not your typical MC. While he has a troubled past, he looks forward to the future. Follow Dante, his parents, and the new friends he meets along the way as they traverse this new system world. However, before they can explore this new world they must complete, the Tutorial. (Please note: This tutorial will be part of the story. Rather than a skim of the information, you will get to experience it in depth. So the tutorial will last a good while.) A much slower style of LitRpg than what you would normally find. Follow Dante and his party as they find their world taken over by the system. Welcome people of Earth to the Upward Bound System!... With the system's arrival so too does great danger come... The tools of your survival shall be granted upon you by the system... Please note, I don't own the art. Please enjoy the story, and if you don't please leave a comment and I will try to improve the story for you. This is the second version of this story, so feel free to check out the original and compare the two.

A priest, a former president, a schizophrenic, a dinosaur, a serial killer, a beetle enthusiast, an aztec god, and a vampire, all fated to meet each other because one had a change of heart. Fate.. It's a silly thing, really. But, everything happens for a reason.(This fanfic contains minor swearing, blood, and character deaths.)
