《Chaos Realm; A VRMMO Tale》5. HandleBar's recruit

The Errand Quest Board was filled to the brim. Gene was able to fish out an interesting quest from the haystack. Wewick. The girl looked like she was about to sow seeds on her country farm. Why would anyone care about someone like that? Because she lived in the innermost part of the city, that's why. Wewick was one of the most introverted characters present in the game. It was impossible(almost) to build up an affinity with her.
Gene looked at the quest that almost seemed like a dream. A quest from one of the most famous people in the realm.
Quest: Errands
Wewick's special request
Wewick is looking for an able person for a job.
Requirement: 10 fame
Rewards: Miscellaneous
She quickly grabbed it and left looking for an attendant.
"Hi, did you find a suitable quest?" The girl who was barely older than Gene asked as she handed over the errand quest poster to her.
The attendant sealed the poster and placed it in her folder behind the counter.
"Please head to the eastern barracks. The request issuer will meet you at the HandleBar. It's a small pub mostly catering to the outer folks. Here, you will need this token to enter."
"Thank you." Gene left looking for 'HandleBar' near the eastern barracks. What she found was a small pub. The patrons were mostly the soldiers and a few regulars from around the area.
As Gene walked to the door, her entrance was blocked by a guard.
"Sorry, the place is restricted to regulars. You will need someone to introduce you before you can enter." The guard blocking was gentle.
Blocking entry to a woman in a regular pub was unheard of. What kind of place is this? From her game knowledge, she immediately recognised the armour the guard wore. Anyone else would have missed the difference but her eyes caught the intricate patterns.

'Nobility? For a guard?' Noticing Gene's wide eyes, the guard looked more pleased.
"Sorry" she immediately took out the token she received from the quest hall.
"Miss Wewick's token? Sorry for troubling you." The guard became more humble seeing the token in Gene's hand. He immediately called one of his friends to guide her through the place.
"Thank you, sir." Gene didn't forget to greet the guard before she left. Even the little gestures counted. And truly the smile on the guard's face broadened. Of course, there wasn't much point in increasing familiarity with random mobs. But practice makes perfect.
"You are the one sent by the guild?" The voice that she was familiar with from countless streams entered her ears. Of course, it was her first time meeting this country girl in person.
"You are too weak," Wewick said without any hesitation.
'Everyone's weak in your eyes.' Gene kept her thoughts to herself. She kept silent waiting for Wewick to continue. She knew there was a quest suitable for her. Otherwise, the requirement would be too high.
"Tell me. What do you think of working for me? I need someone to run a few errands related to this pub. Of course, you will be rewarded handsomely." Wewick kept staring at Gene.
Wewick's Offer
Wewick is looking for someone to run errands for her. Working for Wewick's pub can attract powerful enemies.
"I don't mind as long as it doesn't restrict my freedom."
Gene's response was reasonable in Wewick's view.
"I'm not looking for any employees. What I'm looking for is someone who could deliver our products discreetly. It does involve some travelling. Once you accept, you will be responsible for protecting the merchandise as well." Wewick's words were perfect. In the world of respawns, nothing will prevent someone from putting their life on the line. Gene readily accepted the challenging job. She felt the job was tailored for her.

"Keep the token safe. It will help identify you to my customers. We will contact you through the token when we need you." Wewick dismissed Gene and the guard walked her out.
Errand quest complete.
Rewards earned…
1600 experience points
20 silver coins
Wewick's token(Common)
Affinity with Wewick: None
'Guess I'll have to wait for her to contact me.' Gene was happy with the results. It was a decent reward considering there wasn't much to do. She checked the time. It has been almost 5 hours since she started playing. Time flies once you are invested.
Wewick was truly generous. Twenty silver coins for a meetup. It wasn't a lot-lot but at her level, it was a lot.
Back in the quest hall, Gene found another suitable quest that had a potentially high reward.
Quest: Errand
Courier Service
Lt. Felipe requires someone to deliver a package to his son, Jonas living at Cloverdale.
Reward: 10 silver coins
Gene took the quest and left to look for the lieutenant.
The errand mission was simple. She was able to find Lt. Felipe at the eastern barracks. There was a little worry on his face as he handed over the packet.
"Please make sure he gets it as soon as possible."
Gene could make out the situation from the words written on the packing. It seemed like someone forgot their son's birthday.
"Of course, I will leave immediately." Gene tried to squash his worrying heart which brought a faint smile on his face.
"Thank you." He followed her out to see her off.
"Please come back and let me know once you have delivered it."
Cloverdale was a few kilometres away from the city. The caravans would take half an hour to reach. A horse could be rented at the price of two silver for fast travel. Gene chose to spend the few silver coins. The price wasn't much considering the good relationship she could build with an important military man.
The horses were available at the city entrances. Paying the cost of two silver coins, she rented one horse for half an hour and rushed towards Cloverdale to meet Jonas.

A Mildly Odd Reality Breaker
Omar receives an unexpected visitor who comes baring a gift—a "registration ticket"—in the form of a small metal card. The ticket is itself an offer to participate in the game, "Reality Break." Accepting this offer means that Omar will be able to perceive the true nature of reality where there is not one, but two dimensions of time, and in this second dimension history changes (and somewhat "frequently"). Along with this, he will also gain access to the "chronopause"; another reality that is not so much parallel to our own as it is perpendicular, which acts as both a place and the natural boundary between non-sequential points on the timeline. Using the chronopause, Omar will become a chrononaut with the ability to travel through time, and as a player, he will be given a cybernetic interface and his own portable extradimensional storage space. It's a strange conversation, but due to Omar's dismally short attention span, he only consciously hears that last bit about the portable pocket space, and that's only after the physics-defying void is opened in his living room and literally waved in front of his face. Reality is certainly stranger than most people realize, but then again, so is Omar. Thankfully, he responds well to shiny things, and for better or for worse, his chronic inattentiveness is the least of his psychological issues. Omar also has a mild form of "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" which presents itself as an occasional, arbitrary need to disobey others (especially authority figures). However, his oddest psychological issue by far is his "abnormally hyperactive" subconscious mind. Outwardly and consciously, Omar is a lazy, apathetic man-child prone to mildly asinine behavior. Subconsciously, he's some sort of genius capable of extraordinary feats of cognition. Most of the time, Omar is a (technically) functioning adult, but in order to live as such, he must rely entirely upon unusual abilities he's completely unaware of, despite the fact that he uses them regularly. Up until now, his life had merely been ridiculous, but now it was also a game. Note: The narrative style is that of a reliable narrator with a "3rd-person sarcastic" POV. This story takes place in the Reality Breakers/Chronopause universe.
