Chapter 21 · Rising

I liked the sunrise. You couldn't see it very well from the flat but the tiniest bit of warm light seemed to glide around the glass and stone walls of the rising building. While there were no bird noises I could hear the odd car humming down the road. This was a peaceful part of London I guess. Or maybe they had magic cars, a magic mini Cooper.

"So Zoe said you're going to be staying here then," Bane said more as a statement than a question.

I turn back to look at her. She looked a mess with her short hair a mess most likely from sleeping on the sofa. Her clothes were not much better to have creese in her jeans and a leather jacket. A pair of dry muddy red fabric shoes sat next to the sofa, which I could only imagine was her's.

"Guess that cool. I might have some friends come round, hope you don't mind. Oh also if you see any rats with purple fur just walk away and tell me." Bane told me with a complete state face.

"Em, ok. I'm sure I will be fine with people. But what's with the rats?" I asked half hoping to see was joking.

"I may have pissed off some crazy warlock and he made these mind reading rats to follow me around. There mostly ok but after a while, they start to form this big swarm that took over half my old flat," Bane muttered now finished her water and was starting to go from the cupboards.

"Is that a common thing that happens?" I asked

"No. There are laws and stuff but he was like a hundred years old and was fairly powerful so he got away with it with a warning." She said taking some pills and putting the kettle on.

"So... is being that old normal. For magic people." I said. I mean it magic so maybe people could live forever, all the wizards in movies were super old so maybe there was some truth to that.

" sometimes. Some things like bird people live for about ten years and some old god are from different realms of reality that are billion years old. One thing about magic is that it makes no sense and can change how it works in seconds. I think you will live a while since you have some kind of elf blood." Bane explained while waiting next to the kettle.

"Why does everyone keep saying I'm part elf or fey. I don't think I'm part elf." I said now turning back to look at the rising sun.

"Well you look like a city elf and you give off that vibe. Don't worry about it too much it not that uncommon for there to be half-elves." Bane said mow pouring out the boiled water into a mug.

"Ok," I whisper. Maybe I was part elf. I mean mum had disappeared when I was little and my dad... had also disappeared. That odd. I had never found that weird before but now I think about it my family had all died or disappeared. I had never met my dad and my mum had gone when I was five. I wasn't sad about it, I had grown used to it just being me and my brother.

When he died was when I truly felt alone. I knew that I was on my own. He had cared for me since mom left.
