《Escapia: A VRMMO》Chapter 8: The Cave

Daemon, Lockheart, and Nyaru were sitting on the grass on the Main Floor, talking. Lockheart looked weary. Nyaru, on the other hand, had already lost interest in talking, leaning her head on the grass watching the ants crawling on the ground.
Meanwhile, Daemon was trying to explain the cave dungeons on Floor 3 to these two:
"Cave dungeons are located on Level 3. We will have our first dungeon battle in here..."
"As you know, the concept of each cave dungeon varies. Ice caves, fire caves, underground caves, etc. And the cave we're going to is..."
Daemon sighed and continued:
"Undersea Dungeon. So, we'll be fighting undersea creatures in an undersea-themed cavern. Nyaru?"
Nyaru stopped watching the ants and turned to Daemon:
"Yes, nii-chan?"
"If the enemies in the dungeon have octopuses or something, stay away from their tentacles, okay? You never know what the creatures the Kuudere Dev has programmed will do..."
Lockheart frowned as soon as she realized where this is going:
"Daemon, what the hell are you thinking?"
Daemon ignored Lockheart and continued:
“Lockheart, you give me buffs as usual... But this time there is one more thing. Use the Buffer class's weak AOE attack on ranged sea creatures while I hunt the melee ones. And use your MP wisely.”
Lockheart stepped back, not showing his confusion. Daemon turned to Nyaru:
"Nyaru, your only task at the moment is to heal us as your MP fills up okay?"
Nyaru nodded and smiled:
"I'll do my best to protect you!"
——————————————————————————————
After teleporting into the cave, Nyaru and Lockheart looked around. With its stalactites and stony ground, this was a perfectly normal cave. Daemon pointed to the red ring that appeared at the corner of the cave:
"Put your teleport crystals in the red circle to start the dungeon!"

When everyone dropped the crystals inside the circle, the crystals disappeared in an instant. The stalactites disappeared in an instant, the stones on the ground disappeared and corals appeared. The ground was filled with sea sand and the walls of the cave were covered with starfish.
Nyaru clapped her hands, shouting with delight. Daemon continued:
"Get your weapons! Enemies are about to appear."
First, giant crabs appeared inside the cave. Huge mossy boulders rose from the sea sand, and on the rocks appeared mermaids with wands in their hands with a blue crystal at the tip.
Daemon drew out his sword and shouted:
"Guys, you fight the mermaids, I'll fight the crabs"
The mermaids raised their wands and aimed at the Daemon, flashing blue triangles inside a red ring just below Daemon's feet. In an instant, lightning began to descend upon the Daemon. Daemon tumbled to the ground, fending off the lightning.
Lockheart targeted one of the mermaids with his wand and shot her with the green light from his wand. The mermaid fell from the mossy rock and rolled:
"That's it, Lockheart, it looks like your aiming at the mermaids will be enough for this battle. For the moment, your damage doesn't matter."
Daemon started running toward the giant crabs at this time. Daemon swung his Mythril sword at one of the giant crabs. The giant crab tried to grab the sword with its claw, but before its claw was fully closed, Daemon jumped up and slashed the crab's claw with his sword.
The creature started screaming in pain, running aggressively towards the Daemon, swinging its other claw. Daemon took advantage of this and jumped on the crab's other claw and ran towards his head. When Daemon reached the top of his head, he thrust his sword into the crab's eye. Daemon landed on the ground crab's head as the creature began to writhe in pain.

The creature stopped screaming in pain and an instant, it split into amber particles and disappeared.
"One down, Lockheart! How's your situation?"
"I killed two more mermaids! But more of them keep spawning and it's kinda hard to avoid their attacks-"
In an instant, lightning from the mermaids' staff struck Lockheart. Lockheart swung a meter and hit his head on the mossy rock, his HP bar turning from green to orange.
Daemon turned to Nyaru:
"Nyaru, heal Lockheart!"
Nyaru spread her fingers and pointed her hand at Lockheart. A red string of light emerged from Nyaru's fingers, rushing towards Lockheart and enveloping his body. Lockheart's HP changed from orange to yellow.
For the first time, Nyaru, Lockheart, and Daemon were engaged in a battle that challenged them, Lockheart and Nyaru occasionally putting a slight smile on their faces, revealing that they were enjoying the moment.
Daemon, on the other hand, was completely serious, already grasping the gravity of the situation, doing his best to rule Lockheart and Nyaru so they wouldn't die.
Lockheart looked at Daemon at this time, and her smile faded. "Why doesn't he just try to have fun with us for a second?"
She was getting tired of this now. Whenever she spoke to the Daemon, it always came back to the game itself. Lockheart laughed to herself is not so much bothered by Daemon's thinking and making sexist jokes and also the fact that Daemon was an otaku neet didn't bother her either. This bothered him a lot when he first met Daemon, but gradually she got used to the stupidity. She soonly realized Daemon wasn't an 'incel', if he were, he wouldn't even want to be friends with herself, no. The source of Daemon's thoughts came from somewhere else.
But the fact that Daemon saw herself and Nyaru as creature-killing grind robots rather than humans, was what bothered him enough to leave the team. Up until now, Lockheart had endured being dragged along, but she was at her limit.
Lockheart, Daemon, and Nyaru killed all the creatures within 20 minutes and all the moss rocks disappeared.
Lockheart and Nyaru cried out in victory, but Daemon silenced them:
"Wait, the war isn't over yet."
Daemon pointed to the middle of the cave. A single mossy boulder began to rise slowly from the middle of the cave. Its size increased until it was 5 meters. Three mermaids appeared above Boulder and began to scream. The cave started to shake, Nyaru began to tremble, Lockheart and Daemon gripped their weapons tightly.

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
