《A Savage's Journey》Chapter 40: Awake
Advertisement
A lone dog sat at the top of a ziggurat and watched the sun set on the horizon. There were a few things different about this dog though. First was that it was three meters tall and ten meters long. Second was that even though it was called a dog it resembled a wolf much more having extremely sharp and deadly teeth and pointed ears. Third was that it had two heads. The head on the left was missing its leftmost eye and the other eye was a blazing red while the right head had two eyes with pitch black irises. This death dog sat there and watched as the sun set
That marks the end of the thirty-fifth day. An entire month has passed since I’ve broken through and those LAZY SHITS HAVEN’T EVEN MOVED A FUCKING INCH! The last part was accentuated with a roar from the left head. Jason had been waiting in the ziggurat for an entire month not leaving to fight anything as he waited for his team. He only came out for the last few hours of his day to watch the sun slowly set and he could only fight the occasional scorpions that wandered in. It had been thirty five days since he started this practice of watching the sun set. Halfway through the month he had gotten his hybrid transformation to the max rank and then had started to work on his full death dog transformation.
The first few days of this transformation had been very jarring for Jason. It wasn’t as if he had grown two differing personalities or anything when he transformed it was just that he now had two different brains. Each brain had the same personality that was Jason, but each brain was at the same time autonomous. Which led Jason to have to make some ground rules for himself and with himself. He hadn’t actually had to yet, but he put them there in the case of future fights.
Rule one was that in a fight the left head and right head should focus on the top and bottom of an opponent respectively. If they weren’t focusing on top or bottom then left or right respectively. In certain situations this rule can be ignored. Rule two was that since they shared Essence the heads could only use their respective breath attacks if the opponent was on that head’s side. If they were surrounded or if the opponent was in the middle then the left head had priority unless the enemy was immune or resistant to fire. Rule three was that whenever the two Jason’s thought they had better ideas they had to do breath, claw, bite to determine a winner.

The game’s rules had the same rules as rock, paper, scissors but since they were a death dog they couldn’t really do rock, paper, scissors. Claw beat breath as if a head was smacked then the breath would miss, breath beat bite as if a head went in for a bite only to be hit by a breath attack then it would hurt like hell, and bite beat claw as getting a paw chewed was painful. Of course Jason also set the rule that if a head was using breath it couldn’t actually breath. Just opening the mouth and mimicking it was enough. After all he wasn’t looking to die trying to decide whose plan or whose decision was better.
After howling and roaring his frustrations out Jason went back down to the boss room with Little Cub by his side. The small coyote had grown to level twenty-four after eating the death dog for a month straight and it was as tall as Caleb was now. It seemed it needed something more to fully evolve and breakthrough though. The coyote had also taken a liking to following Jason around during this month. Probably because of pack mentality and I’m basically an alpha coyote to him.
Jason walked through the ziggurat and through the corpses of the zombies and scorpions as he made his way down. As he reached the fourth floor he laid down in the waiting room with his left head on its side and his right head on his paws. His left head went up and bit his right head’s ears causing right Jason to growl back at it. This started a small nipping fight as they decided who could get the paws that night. It was more comfortable to sleep on their soft paws than the cold floor. After the small battle the left head laid back down unwillingly and whined for a little bit with the right head keeping its place on the paws.
When Little Cub saw the fight was over he went over and slept in front of Jason his belly towards Jason’s heads, showing his vulnerability and servitude. Like that Jason’s two brains calmed down and slept through the night.

Well a bit closer to leveling up. Already a month and I haven’t leveled up. This is depressing. Leveling speed sure slows down after level twenty-four. Or rather it was fast because I always had a few skills that would level at the exact same speed which multiplied my growth by a factor of some number that I’m too lazy to find. Jason woke up to the usual Experience Gained screen and naturally went to check his skills and such finding everything extremely disappointing.
He got up and went to look into the boss room finding his party members still sitting there doing nothing. They were simply bones by now and Jason was truly afraid that they had simply died. I’ll stay another month and then after that… shit… after that. Jason’s left head drooped. After that I’ll admit they died. I’ll leave with Little Cub and… well I guess I’ll go back to the city. Or I’ll try to find some new city. I don’t know. I’ll figure things out…
As Jason was leaving the room he saw one of Selene’s hands twitch. It was only a small movement but right when Jason saw it he barely took a second to cross the room and stare intently at Selene with both heads. He even reached down to cradle her but remembered he couldn’t right when he saw his paws. Deactivating the skill after a bit less than half a month Jason finally returned to his human form.
Completely naked like the day he was born Jason stood there in front of Selene. Eyes slightly wild with his beard and hair a long and tangled mess he fully looked the part of some hobo. When he donned his kanunnah pants and cloak it just made things worse as they accentuated his wild look. He crouched down next to Selene and picked her up in a princess carry. Bringing her over to Caleb he started to bring out all the food he had collected over the past month that was still good. Mostly it was meat from the day before, an assortment of fruits and berries that he had, and a whole lot of monster jerky. Jerky after all took a long time to go bad.
Like this he sat there and waited for them to wake up. After another ten full minutes he was finally awarded with Selene opening her eyes. The first thing Jason did when he saw her eyes open from behind the mask was stand up and start laughing and dancing around in place. Then without letting her get a grip Jason rushed forward and started shaking her.
“HAHAHA! You’re back little witch. I knew you weren’t dead. My month of waiting wasn’t in vain!” Letting her go and cackling to himself Jason then started to stare at Caleb. Come on buddy get up. Move! I don’t want to celebrate only one of you living. Jason continued staring leaving Selene to give up on communicating with him and instead just ate. Jason stared for seconds, then minutes, the minutes stretched into hours. Just as the hours were about to turn into a day Caleb stirred.
Without even waiting for him to fully awaken Jason once again started his maniacal laughter. Then once Caleb was fully awake Jason shoved some scorpion meat jerky into his mouth and yelled at the ceiling.
“We’re all alive! HAHAHAHAHAHA,” As Caleb sat there Jason devolved into a laughter fueled by madness and relief.

And yet fewer still know him for what he truly was. His was a sad existence, made to shoulder the burdens of an entire realm. He helped, he harmed and he left a trail of destruction in his wake, he will always be my friend. But know this, whatever your opinion on the man, nay the monster is, one thing is true.
