“I leveled UP! Thank god.” Jason woke up on the ground in the middle of the tent. He had done exactly as Baghric had asked and ran until he could collapse. He stumbled out of the tent and looked up at the sky watching the sun as it rose? Set? I don’t know. I can’t really tell where it’s going. Jason settled down by the remnants of the campfire.

Right as he did a new screen appeared in front of him. It was another talent selection except if Baghric was telling the truth when Jason had questioned him the first day this talent was based on Jason’s stat points.

Talents

Mark of Luck 10% increase to the effects of Luck Mark of Fortune 15% increase to the effects of Luck

Why did I just get the Mark of Luck and then a better version of it. I need to figure out the requirements to get different talents and such. Either way I’m going with Fortune. Let’s see my stats now. Wait… almost forgot. All stat points into Luck

Jason had no clue if Baghric kept it going all these days or not. If he kept it going the entire time I was running then that’s about… carry the one… seventy seven hours? Ya that sounds about right. So I was running for three fucking days. I’m dead. I’m just gonna lay here.

Jason laid down by the firepit and closed his eyes.

“WAKE UP LADDIE! I GOT YE SOME FOOD!” Was the only thing Jason heard before he felt something slam into his stomach. Jason had the wind knocked out of him and was left gasping for air as he struggled to push whatever it was off of himself and get up. After he succeeded he found Baghric sitting on the ground heartily eating the leg of some animal. His beard somehow staying immaculate in all the meat and blood.

“Ye were out for almost a day, laddie. Good thing I came back right ‘fore ye were bout ta sleep again.” Jason was distinctly not glad that he had come back right before he slept again. “Well laddie do the same thing again today. This time though I got ye eight fruits.”

“You want me to die… you want me to just fall down and die.” Jason couldn’t believe it. Baghric was gonna make him run for eighty eight hours this time. Eighty eight hours. “You want me to die…” Jason collapsed.

“No laddie quite the opposite. I want ye to live and live long. Ye need to be able to run long and ‘ard. Ye also need skill points to get some fightin and defensive skills. Now before ye start running can ye get ta third tier luck passive?” Sighing Jason resigned to his fate of being run to death.

“No.” Baghric tsked. What the hell does he expect from me? To be a god?

“Alright sonny start running.” Baghric turned back to his food and started eating. Jason looked at his one skill point that he could use, but decided not to. Whatever Baghric wants me to get I should probably save up to get it. Jason took the heart bag, and then started running.

Jason started at a normal running pace and noticed how much faster he was. Damn a forty percent increase in running speed really does mean something. I’m also only being drained at oh maybe twenty stamina an hour. I hate this goddamn guesstimating thing. System can you just show me my exact regeneration rate.

It really did it… huh. Ok so it looks like normal running pace costs me 24 stamina which means that before the twenty percent it cost me thirty an hour. Jason sped up to a sprint.

Ok so not an exact math. My sprint is faster than double my normal speed. Not enough to be triple but more than double at least. Yet the stamina cost is only doubled. Frankly that’s good math for me. Math wins for once… just this once though.

Jason slowed back down to normal pace and kept on running like that until his stamina was at 5. Then he ate a heart. He was getting better at not eating them like a wild animal, but he still struggled with it sometimes. He waited for a bit not running and just watched the stamina tick up. Then when it was at fifty he started running. Using the same method as last time when he just tried to keep the regeneration and usage the same. With the new chart he could pull up though that became much easier.

I wonder how many other things the system can do that I’m just not aware of.

He was just about to eat the second heart when he heard Baghric grunt. Turning Jason expected to see Baghric standing there about to say something but what he saw instead was a seventy kilogram giant wolf flying through the flap of the tent. Jason dove out of the way as the wolf was sent flying by him. The wolf got up quickly and started to leap through the flap before it saw Jason.

Digging its front legs into the ground the wolf quickly turned and stopped himself. Now facing Jason the wolf growled with its hackles raised. Then it pounced. Jason only had time to do one thing. DEFENSE!! DAMMIT I NEED DEFENSE.

WOODEN BONES! WOODEN BONES! JUST GET ME THE DAMN BONES! AHHHHH! Jason was somehow dodging, ducking, dipping, diving, and dodging his way outside. Right as he got to the tent flap the wolf managed to get a good hit in and struck him across the chest. Jason reeled back screaming in pain as blood flowed from his chest.

Sixty-seven health in one hit. That’s after I got slash resistance as well. Wait… it didn’t reach my bones. So the slash reduction means nothing. Is that how it works… probably. Christ… shit that hurts. Jason was stumbling backwards as fast as he could away from the wolf.

He managed to get a quick look around and saw that there were three wolves already dead and Baghric was fist fighting a fourth near the still burning fire pit. There was one fighting Jason and then there was one more. The last one was the largest one yet reaching about half a meter above Jason’s own head. This one was simply just circling the fight watching.

Jason wanted to watch Baghric fighting because it was just so… interesting. He would seem to flow around the opponent and land just a hit or two every few seconds. Yet each hit would make the beast stumble and grow noticeably tired.

Jason could’ve kept watching and absorbing the intricacies all day, but unfortunately He shocked back to his own fight, if one could call it that, when his wolf barreled into him. Jason was sent rolling and immediately popped back up to his feet just in time to avoid a bite aimed at his arm.

What can I do… I have no fighting skills. Wait wait… I have that aura. If I can make it so a turn of bad luck for it can kill it or cripple it then I’ll be ok. Shit claw… oww oww my chest hurts. Maybe rolling to dodge wasn’t a good idea, but then again I didn’t die. So it’s a win.

But… luck can’t be trained. It can’t be made to occur. All I can do is add more chances for random things to happen. I need to add more variables. More chaos.

“BAGHRIC! I NEED YOU TO KNOCK OVER THAT FIRE PIT.” Baghric for his part never even questioned Jason. All he did was knock away his opponent and give a swift kick to the fire pit scattering burning wood and ashes everywhere.

If my luck holds then hopefully we’re all going to be standing in a burning forest in a minute or two. It didn’t even take that long. As Jason was trying to avoid the wolf’s most recent swipe of the claws a nearby tree’s base caught fire. In not even a minute the entire tree and the surrounding trees were on fire. Then one by one all the trees caught fire until the three wolves, the human, and the dwarf were all standing in a scene from hell.

As Jason was “fighting” his opponent a tree nearby made a creaking sound. The wolf lunged at Jason in an attempt to tear his throat out. Jason dove out of the way and then sprung back up prepared to dodge another attack. It never came.

The wolf was underneath a burning tree yelping and howling in pain. It was scrabbling with its claws trying to push the tree off of itself, but with every attempt it just kept burning itself more and more. Jason took the time to just take a breath.

Ackackack hfackk bleuee… ptoh...ptoh. Jason hacked and spit as smoke rushed into his mouth. He got low to the ground and started breathing again. This time having more success. Baghric was still fighting his opponent, although the wolf he was fighting looked like it was going to collapse any second now. As for what Jason assumed to be the alpha wolf...where is it?

All of the sudden the forest behind Jason exploded into noise as that very wolf jumped out and tore off a chunk of Jason’s right arm. Before Jason could even scream a white ball of light hit him and sank into his chest. The next thing he knew his arm was regenerating at a visible rate.

That assurance and slight return of confidence allowed Jason to dodge the oncoming attack from the alpha. Next thing he knew Baghric was beside him. Giving the wolf a good taste of a classic one-two punch. Then Baghric turned into a flurry of fists. He was no longer gracefully dodging and giving few but hard hits. He was now simply a storm of punches all directed at the alpha wolf.

I need to leave. I need to get out of this smoke. It’s getting harder… harder… to breathe… to think. With a shaking body Jason stumbled through the flames. He made it around fifteen or twenty meters before he heard a crack from above. He looked up.

The last thing he saw was a charred branch fill up his vision. He felt it hit his head, then nothing.
