《Grasping for the Heavens》Chapter Five

Yes! I finally made it into the gate! Or. One of the ten gates. Or. I think there is ten gates because the gate I’m entering is labelled ten… There could be thirty gates for all I care. It also seems to be custom for one group to enter one by one. Why? Is it for security reasons? The doors always slide shut when one group enters…
It’s finally my turn. Nothing bad could possible happen from this, right?
“Alert. Subject related to a hostile species has been detected. Sending gate room 10 to cell number 5.” A mechanical voice says.
Suddenly the walls warp and I see myself staring at a stone wall. I… Don’t understand. This world has magic, it has swords, but then it has sentient robots, scanning technology and teleportation? Although teleportation could simply be from magic…
I wonder what I should wait for in this cell? They won’t just leave me here forever right? I do run on mana afterall. And I’m pretty sure I get my mana from the sun. So what do I do when I run out? That… That would be really bad. And I’m not in the mood to figure out what happens at that point.
“Hey! HEY! Is there anyone there?!” I shout. “I think there’s been a misunderstanding here! I’m not here to cause harm!”
Please please let there be someone there. I really REALLY don’t want to test out what happens. What if I just stop functioning? What if I can’t recharge my batteries after running out? Or what if my memory gets wiped and that just means I died. Because memories are what makes us who we are… Or maybe there is an auto save feature for memory? I don’t know… Let’s try tapping on my head…
There’s a few options here…
Auto save: off
Memory switch: off
Parallel thinking: off
Automatic distribution of mana: off
Automatic maintenance: on
Okay… Let’s just put auto save on fow now. I have no clue what memory switch does. Maybe it switches my consciousness with another robot? Parallel thinking… I wonder how this works. Let’s tap on this… Ah… My mana, no no no no no no no no, my mana! It’s dropping! Oh, it stopped. It’s just at the number 20%… I wonder why it used so much mana? Whatever, I’m turning this feature off until I have a bigger battery...

… My… My battery isn’t rising… Actually, it’s barely noticeable but it’s dropping. I never noticed this but it’s dropping. It’s been about a day since I’ve been in here… And I have 19% of my battery now… Should I call out again?
“IS THERE ANYONE THERE?!” I thunder. “I SWEAR, I’M GOING TO TEAR THIS PLACE DOWN!”
I mean, the chances that I can tear this cell down is close to nill. But it’s always good to bluff right? I mean, I hope these people are gullible… Please be gullible people, I beg of you!
“Alright! Alright! I finally got the meeting I wanted, allow me to bring you to the mayor… And your name?” A voice asks.
My name? Would it be a good thing if I mentioned I was a part of those sentient robots? Could it be that for just being part of that species I get murdered. Actually, am I still hooked up to the mainframe? Wouldn’t that main computer take over? I mean something had to smack me into this body… I don’t want my name to be lame though… I need something… Cool. Something that will make people remember me just because of the name.
Let’s just reply with, “My name is Eldritch Shi-te.”
Nice right? Eldritch means sinister or ghostly. While Shite, pronounced as shi-te, basically means hero in japanese. Nice right? I used the random knowledge popping up in my head to come up with that.
“Eldritch… Shi-te?” The voice asks.
“Yes, but you may call me Eldritch.” I reply. “Can you take me to your mayor?”
TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER!! No… I just had to make that reference… Where did that come from?
“Yes, yes of course. Releasing cell number 10, transporting subject to government building 1 to meet with the mayor. Subject is named Eldritch Shi-te.” The voice answers.
After saying the commands, the wall to my left opens like a clam leading to a hallway with blinking lights leading towards a direction I assume I have to follow. Well, nothing else to do but follow it right? I hope I don’t get turned into a slave or something… Actually, saying that might actually jinx me…

This… Is a really long hallway… I mean, I expected this because I assumed I was underground but wow. This is really deep… What’s that in the distance? Is that a door? OH FINALLY! A DOOR! I was getting sick of the same wall going by over and over again…
Sprinting up to the door, I reach it in a matter of seconds. Right. Manners state that I should knock on the door before entering. So… Let’s do it.
“Who is it?” Asks the voice inside.
“Um… I’m from cell number 10?” I respond
“Come in.” Says the voice curtly.
Opening the door I’m greeted by a full assembly of people staring down at me. Oh look, there’s a podium up front, should I step up to it? Yeah. That seems like a good idea…
“Why are you here… Eldritch?” The man in the very front asks.
“Um… I’m here for a job?” I respond, I mean, I did come here for a job.
“What type of job?” The man next to him asks. This guy is an old guy with a really long white beard almost touching the ground. Did I mention he’s short with green hair and a weird cane?
“I was thinking of becoming a guard, until I was… Detained.” I reply.
“What are you doing here? Why are you not with your kind?” The next guy spits out. This guy… I automatically don’t like this guy just for the reason he has a pointed nose. Look at it! It’s like a falcons beak! That’s how sharp it looks!.
Calming down, I respond, “I am a deserter. I do not want to be involved in the war between my own race and your’s.”
“Why do you desert your people?” The fourth guy asks. I like this guy. Why? He’s got glasses. That’s why. Did I mention the first guy to talk seems young? Blond hair and blue eyes, your average pretty boy.
“I deserted my people for leaving me behind in a losing battle.” I reply. Okay, I wasn’t actually left behind but it sounds better this way. It was more like I was underground and couldn’t be found. I wonder how 666 is?
“Why would you come to your enemies?” Says the first guy looking me at me straight into the eyes.
“For revenge.” I respond without flinching from his gaze. Okay, I don’t actually want revenge, but I need a reason for them to let me stay here you know? I don’t want to be a homeless guy you know? But then again… In my old world, homeless people were kicked to the moon…
“I see… We will give you your guardian job. You will be in charge of…” Says the second guy, and then he turns around and starts talking with the group behind him. Who am I guarding? I’d like to know…
“We will give you your job after you prove yourself. We would like to see your combat abilities. Prove yourself in the coliseum.” Says the second man.
So I get to provide entertainment for the people? And also this way, for anyone wanting to employ me… They’ll see if I’m really worth employing… I think that works…
“You will have to win 10 battles.” The second guy adds as an afterthought.
Author’s Note:
Hey guys! I found a new song I liked… Da Tweekaz ft. Ozcar - Break The Spell (Eye of the Flashback Edit) And the reason for this chapter was simply because I found the time for it.That’s all.
