《The Fleet》Chapter 04 : Kuroe

Current Japan had only seven cities left of its previous hundreds. They were, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Embetsu, Komatsu, Ibusuki and The Island of Okinawa.

After the war reached a stalemate, the government made a new management system for the seven cities. Japan which was already low on Food and other necessity production was in peril. Luckily the economists got a way out. They managed to strike a pact at the meeting of THE ALLIANCE. Under this pact, Japan would share its constantly evolving technology with the other countries and they would inturn share their food and other necissities with Japan.

But Japan didn’t just feed off others. After the cities were fortified, they began a large scale reclamation operation. Between the Line of control surrounding the Cities and the citu walls, farms were set up. Under constant military supervision to prevent any monsters from destroying the crop. By this they reduced their imports to 70%.

The next problem was fuel. However that was solved by a miraclous invention. ‘The H-Eureka-Hydrogen Fuel Cell’. Originally made for weapons development it soon boomed as a energy source. Its fuel was oxygen and Hydrogen and it gave only Dihydrogen mono-oxide as exhaust. 90% more efficient than any fossil fuel.

The transportation sector changed as well. Focus on public transport rather than private transport increased as such the traffic on roads decreased as well.

And when Neo-Humans were being driven out of their home countries, Japan welcomed them and as such was the country to have almost all the Neo humans except a few who remained in Germany.

But the most important changes came in the JSDF. The Defence forces as well as the Airforce and Maritime defence forces or what remained of them were divided into seven parts. Each assigned to a city. These seven parts were responsible for protecting their own city as well as help others out.

The cities situated inland focused more on the Airforce and Army while the ones on the coastline focused all on their navy. As such Tokyo had the strongest fleet assembled followed by Okinawa.

“The Seventh Fleet”

and today a new admiral had to take command of the most powerful naval force in his young but not-in-experienced hands.

“How beautifull....”

Hakuya murmured looking at the object infront of his eyes from inside the humvee he was currently boarding. It was powered by the H-Eureka fuel cell much like every major vehicle nowadays was.

Accompaning him were two Navy guards who were his personal escorts and one driver and one gunner on the turret of the humvee. The vehicle sped upto the docks where the Seventh Fleet was staitoned to receive her new Admiral.

What caught his eye was the Flagship Ship he would be boarding as the Admiral, but before that lets briefly describe the structure of the seventh fleet.

The fleet Consisted of

5 Submarines

15 Destroyers

5 Light destroyers

2 Aircraft Carrier

250 Naval Aircrafts Including Fighter jets, Hellicopters, transport aircraft etc.

4 Heavy Cruisers

5 Landing Ships

500 ground vehicles including Tanks, Humvees, Mobile Missile launchers, Mobile Aritellery, Trucks etc.

12 Heavy Battleships

8 Light Battleships

5 Patrol vessels

4 Training ships

One may be wondering about the ‘Battleships’ in the fleet. For many they are slow heavy and low damage producing old boats. But against the enemy that defied human logic these ships were a must.

They made the vanguard of the Navy. Most Monsters were not ranged and hence depended on brute physical attacks rather than energy beams or lasers or missiles. As such Battleships toom the brunt of their assault much like Tanks did in MMORPG games while the destroyers and Heavy cruisers annahilated the enemy from the rear with missile and torpedo bomardment.

“The Kuroe”

Hakuya muttered as he gazed at his Flagship. A beautiful Navy battleship. Her colour was dark grey which neared black but it suited her. She was a Bismarck-Class battleship made with collaboration from germany while all the weapons and other machines were of Japanese build.

Hakuya had been going through her specifications the previous night. As a kid he had a huge love; almost an obsession with machines. But among them Ships were especially his favourites.

Kuroe’s size was a hulking 270 metres from bow to stern. With a full load of 55,000 long tons, it was the strongest battleship in the fleet.

She had a beam of 45 m and a maximum draft of 12 m. She was currently Japan's largest warship, and displaced more than any other European or American battleship, with the exception of only one ship of the german navy, commissioned after the end of the war.

Kuroe is powered by three Kawasaki H-7 reactors ; A larger version of the H-Eureka fuel cell; which develop a total of 120,550 kW powerand yield a maximum speed of 45.01knots on speed trials. Kuroe has a cruising range of 10,000 nautical miles at 25 knots.

She is equipped with three Ryu-21 search radarsets, mounted on the forward and stern range finders and foretop.

The standard crew numbered 50 officers and 1500, enlisted men.The crew is divided into twelve divisions of between 70 and 140 men. The first six divisions are assigned to the ship's armament, divisions one to four for the main and secondary batteries and five and six manning anti-aircraft guns which are used to attack airborne monsters. The eight division consisted of specialists, including cooks and, quartermasters (Wardens) repairmen and the ninth division consist of ammunition handlers. The radio operators, signalmen, and sonar operators were assigned to the 10th division. The last two divisions were the engine room personnel ; the engineers.

Kuore is armed with twelve 400 mm (15.7 inch) guns arranged in four tri-gun turrets.

Secondary armament consist of twelve 17.7 cm (7 inch) Rion Auto Cannons, sixteen 15.5 cm (6.1 in) L-66 and sixteen 7 cm (2.75 in) L-87, and twelve 0.50 Calibre (13 mm) High Explosive anti-aircraft guns.

{* NOTE : All measurements are the barrel diametres of the guns/Artillery}

Kuroe’s main armour belt is 400 mm ( 15.7 in) thick and is covered by a pair of upper and main armoured decks that are 70 mm ( 2.75 in) and 150 mm (6 in) thick ERA or Explosive Reactive Armour; respectively. The turrets are protected by 400 mm (15.7 in) thick faces and 300 mm ( 12 in) thick sides.

All in all she is a fearful warship. A queen of the seas. Interestingly, she was just comissioned a month ago and was only admitted in the fleet because the previous flagship, The Minase had been sunk recently in battle taking her crew and the late Admiral with her.

The glorious flag of the Motherland was fluttering beautifully with the wind.

“Then Shall we go?....” Hakuya muttered to himself as he took in the smell of fresh paint and The saline air “Haruto....I will try my best to take care of this fleet....So watch over me...and ....” He took out a photograph from his pocket. And for once a faint but true smile could be seen on his face “everyone...you too better watch me.....”

Keeping the Photo back in his inner pocket he climbed onto his Ship.
