《The Fleet》Chapter 02 : Arrival

The year is AD 2077.It has been 30 years since the 'Great war' was over resulting in humanity losing and taking refuge in the fortified cities. It was a normal day in Tokyo. One of the last surviving 'Haevens' or cities of humanity. Aslo commonly known as Tokyo Area. One of the seven last cities of Japan. Together they stand as the last of the nation of Japan.
During the great war against the monsters which lasted for fifty years, hundreds of such cities stood as the bastions of humanity. But one by one many fell. Now all over the world only a few tens remain. The poor countries that had no way to quickly fortify their cities were all wiped out.
A black haired youth was looking out of the window of a large hellicopter. His long dead eyes reflecting the lights of the Tokyo Area . He kept looking out of the window till they landed. At a helipad. From there he was escorted to a train. Soma and a few soldiers accompanied him. He tried looking out of the train, however all he could see were black tunnel walls with dim lights at fixed intervals. He sighed and closed his eyes.
This is the present way of transport. Most of Japan is now covered by dense forests in which monsters roam. The once bustling streets and high buildings that were destroyed in the war were all engulfed by nature. So transport between the few remaining cities is done by underground subways. While inter contineltal and international transport is mostly done by air but that involves higher risk as flight type monsters are very common. Air travel is also used in times of emergency.
The train stoped at Tokyo Central. The largest station in Japan. The group got off the train and took another.
The Gate was still there. Monsters would often appear from it. No one knew where from they came from. Sceintists believed that the Gate was actually a portal to another world. A portal through time and space which connected two worlds. A certain country once sent an expedition which was supported by other countries too. Over a thousand elite soldiers with most advanced weaponry of their time went through the gate to the other side. They were called the 'First Expeditionary Corps'. Their mission was to find out what exactly lay on the other side of the gate. Once they crossed over they never returned again.

Along with the gate temporary portals called 'Spawn Points' often appeared at cetrain places then closed and then randomly opened and closed again and again. The monsters never stopped coming. At this rate they would soon overrun the last cities. That is if 'they' didn't exist.
They, the last hope of humanity. The only ones who have the power to fight the monsters on par using their strength and intellect.
They are the Neo humans. Neo humans were made on a fixed basis and sent to the frontlines. After the initial attack, the United Nations dissolved and in its place, the Alliance was formed. Consisting of all the still existing nations, the Alliance took control over the Neo Human soldiers.
The boy fixed his clothes. He was wearing a pair of simple black trousers and a white shirt with a black jacket on top of it.
With the opening of the Gate a new power flowed into this world. Magic. Many monsters could use it. A power which completely defied common sense and science. A substance called Mana formed its core. To put it simply Mana to magic was the same as fuel to fire. It was the very essense of it as well as its fuel. This mana spread throughout the world and became as common as the air. Humans originally didn't have any mana in them and hence couldn't use magic. But after a few decades of research and experiments, Neo-human children were born who could control mana in the atmosphere and use it to cast magic. Some could use it to cast spells while some could use it to strenthen their body. However their number was very less. Only one percent of them could do so.
Neo humans were sterile as such if a family sent their children to become one they might as well be making their lineage dissappear. Although Immortality lured many, they knew that once they became a Neo, they had to fight on the frontlines. Which meant a 90% chance of death. Based on all this fact most people gave up this approach of immortality. The ones who didnt, regretted as they died killed by monsters in the war.

As the train neared its destination passangers got on and off. But the boy kept sitting quietly at his seat. His stop was the last one. The soldiers looked at him talking among themselves. They had rarely seen a Neo human up close. Soma just smiled wryly at his mens’ actions.
From the Gate came another unexpected surprise as well. Anti-Magic Elements. They randomly crystallised here and there. These when mixed in weapons proved disastrous for monsters. However their quantity was very less so they had to be used with caution. Together with the Neo-Human soldiers who were made in thousands humanity managed to put the war in stalemate ; with the sacrifice of thousands of these Neo-humans Project Haeven was completed.
However the Alliance soon recognised the the threat of the Neo-Humans. They began to fear the weapons they had themselves created. 《Gods blood 》had many limitations. Not everyone was compatible with it. On an average only one in a thousand. As such the number of Neo-humans was small. Only about 10,000 of them were made but they alone changed the tide of the war. After the war was over, the remaining Neo humans who numbered a little more than a hundred were dismissed off duty. The files on 《Gods Blood 》were burnt off and all archives were destroyed. The very Scientists who made it were killed in ‘mysterious’ ways. All this was done so that no more Neo-Humans could be made.
After the War, as technology advanced, creating stronger weapons, the need for Neo-Humans gradually vanished. However humans are ungratefull. Since the Neo-Humans were made from monsters, they were shunned by the society and called “Cursed Children”. The ones who had saved humanity became the target of scorn. Most of them were silently exiled from their countries and the rest left themselves.
The train finally stopped at its last station. The youth exited the train and looked around the station. He could see a few more soldiers and officers with similar uniforms getting down from the train as well. He boarded an escalator and headed to the surface.
Once they reached on the surface, Soma turned and smiled to Hakuya.
“Welcome to The JSDF Tokyo Headquaters Commander”
The 'Japaneese Self Defence Force' (JSDF) managed the defence of the cities. They were part of the Alliance forces.
As he exited the station, In front of him was a large compoud of The Tokyo JSDF headquaters.
“As much as I hate this damn place.....” He almost cursed “.....I still have to go dont I...”
And headed inside led by Soma.
Little did the world know.
Fate had started its game once again.

God complex
A hero is summoned to another world, vanquishes evil, yadda yadda, saves the kingdom and lives happily ever after. There is no such hero in this story. Just a desperate youth with great ambition and very little to lose. A zero to hero style story set in a country clearly inspired by modern USA with just as many issues and the minority of mages often pulling strings from the shadows. I am also hoping the whole thing won't turn out edgy enough to cut me. I want to rely on actual good writing rather than cheap powertrip gimmicks. edit: Please don't mind Zetari's salty review. He is quite literally making up any use of the torture and human experimentation trope and says MC is blank after 4 chapters where he conveniently stops reading just at the start of his first character development. For extra entertainment, I will be uploading chapters two at a time and compose a relevant poem through the chapter names. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

The Glyph Queen
When Winnie was thirteen, her settlement taught her how to fire a rifle. Her school practiced drills in case raiders came, and the town grew crops in their greenhouse-adapted homes, which were the only places warm enough during the worldwide nuclear winter. The Lakiran empire invades—a corporate-born nation overseen by their corporate-born queen, Victoria Paladino. They ride silent planes whose repulsion field veered bullets away. Three years of occupation later, an exemplar visits—a member of Victoria’s oversight committee rumored to read minds. He tells Winnie that she may have a unique mental power, or a flair. At the empire’s capital, the queen herself tutors Winnie to help her reach the full potential of whatever power she may have. Meanwhile, in post-war Nigeria, a streetwise teenager named Naema sees a different side of the empire. Between corruption and oppression, everyone lives in squaller. People fight over assembled food pastes. She too is told she has a unique flair, not by the empire, but by a fugitive woman who is the last vestige of an ancient witch coven, and she knows a dark secret about what the exemplars do to people like Winnie and Naema. Updates every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The most recent chapters of The Glyph Queen are available on its main website.
