《NO STRINGS ATTACHED》CH. 11

In the morning, Shen and Tempest left the mansion. Atem was staying so he could teach some things to Adeline and make her feel more at ease. True, that was a simple diversion but such things are always working well. And this time would probably go in the same way.
Adeline: Atem, how are you going to teach me? My magic comes from my God?
Atem: Not quite, Miss Adeline. I took the liberty of observing the flow of mana in your body previously and it doesn't yet have those powers from God. What I mean is that your Magic is no different from mine until a certain point...Which is why I can teach you some basics. If you agree, of course?
Adeline: Ah! Yes! Please do!
Atem nodded and led her towars the giant garden behind the mansion. He sat down in the middle of it and Adeline did the same. Then, he began his explanation with a question:
Atem: What do you think Magic is?
Adeline: A power left from God for us to harness and to do good. Though some twist it.
Atem: Alright. That is likely what you were taught that it was. What do you think?
Adeline: Uh, it feels like a slimy thing circulating inside your body?
Atem: Pfft, that's...That's truly you indeed. Let me tell you the truth. Magic is Life and Death. Magic the Elements. Magic is everything. It is the energy at the origins of all. What we Magus do is to try harnessing this power for our own use. Magic encompasses both creation and destruction. I have yet to confirm anything regarding Gods though.
Adeline: Yes since meeting one is probably beyond us!
Atem: ...Yes...Well, that aside, your doctrine at least got one thing right. It is a power for us to harness, neither good nor evil and only its users have to make that choice. Now, I believe the magic you use, mostly buffing and healing, belongs to the creation category. It just so happens to be my favorite.

Adeline: Are you a healer too?!
Atem: Far from it. However you can create things to kill too. What i meant is : let's create a spell together.
Adeline: Wait. What? Create a spell? That's impossible! That's...
Atem: Did you know, miss Adeline? There are two ways to use Magic. And unconsciously, all magic users will always use both in their lives. Unfortunately, most of them fail to see it. Let us start with a simple spell that you should know. Light Orb.
Adeline: Ah, yes, i do know it. It is compulsory to learn for all those who want to become adventurers.
Atem: Yes. Let's review what the spell does, ok?
Adeline: It creates a small ball of light to escape the darkness.
Atem: Yes. Now, let me see you make one and i will do the same.
They both spread one arm towards the front and opened their palms upwards. Then, rune circles appeared in mid-air until nothing but a small ball emitting light appeared.
Atem: Good. Now, you know of this as a spell. What makes a spell?
Adeline: Its construct that has been researched and documented over the years and made to be imparted more easily.
Atem: Wrong. Very wrong.
Adeline: Wrong?
Atem: Yes, wrong. A spell is nothing but the manifestation of the memories of the caster. To create this light ball, did you not try to remember how to create it from a past experience?
Adeline: Ah! Yes, i did! But I had to- Oh! So, that's what creating a spell is!
Atem: Oh? Have you understood?
Adeline: Yes! I think? I remember how i learnt the spell and we had many trials and errors during the time with the other apprentices.
Atem: Yes, and?
By this time, Atem's eyes were filled with satisfaction, pride and hope towards his new student.

Adeline: At that time, we didn't have memories of casting the spell obviously so we were trying to shape the mana and infuse the Light Element in it to make it...That was how we created the spell, right?
Atem: Yes! Bravo! I am very glad that you managed to discover this yourself. Let me detail a bit for you as a reward. I said that there were two ways to use magic. The first one is by memory, using those spells and the second one through creativity and manipulation, creating the spells. Everyone will have to create the spells before being able to memorize them, won't they?
Adeline: Yes, of course.
Atem: Yet most never think of how it really happens. Why was it so difficult the first times but so easy later on simply from a memory?
Adeline: That's...That's incredible, Atem! With this theory, you could become a reknown figure to the history of magic for years to come!
Atem: Which is why you should keep it to yourself, promise me, ok?
Adeline: Uh?! No way?! Why?!
Atem: Because it is dangerous. If everyone could create magic however they want, what do you think would happen? Chaos.
Adeline: That's...
Atem: The top brass probably already know all this. Don't they have some unique spells to themselves?
Adeline: ...I understand. I promise.
Atem: Good. Well then, let us start creating our own new little spell first. Since i am in a good mood and we should start with something simple, let's create a variation of the Light Orb. Let's make it look as if it was a smiling face.
Adeline: ...How? And why?
Atem. Why not? It is only an exercise to build your foundations anyways. As to how, it is very simple. Remember how you moulded magic the first times you were creating the spell. Fill a ball of mana in the top of your palm. Then, make a three holes in it of little depth yet enough depth that it will look like two eyes and a smiling mouth. And...Here we are.
At that very moment, a new spell was created right in front of Adeline. A very simple alteration of another spell. Truly, just a simple variation. Yet, what it meant was far greater. It opened her to the true possibilities of Magic and on the path of a true Magus.
This was the day the spell Smiling Light Orb was born.

Blightbane
Miscellaneous Notes: - I want to see about making a crude map of Shroud to help readers. - I also want to get back to writing Coalescence updates. Schedule Notes: - None for now, updates when I can. [ Thank you for your patience and support as I improve my writing and storytelling abilities. I'm also using this story to better develop lore that extends far beyond it. ] Thanks to another exceptionally talented artist, Hiroeth, Blightbane now has an official cover! Vera was alone again. “You’re completely unprepared. Never before has sending one of you off made me feel quite so guilty.” Whenever she found herself in doubt, she would weigh her actions against the guiding principles of the one whom she revered. “When you don’t know the rules of the game, start making them up. When you are constrained by unfavorable conditions, inject a little chaos.” It was the supplementary message that concerned Vera the most. It was difficult to follow because it was intentionally vague and mired in subjectivity. “How can I enjoy myself when you look so tormented? Are we in danger?” Vera fell silent. An experiment is taking place on a planetary scale. Across the surface of the planet, a phenomenon referred to as "Blight" is spreading. Festering regions defended by fierce creatures called “blightbeasts” taint the surface, warping the land and proliferating unceasingly. Among the sentient creatures of the planet, it is the Blightbane Guild’s responsibility to stem the tide. They endeavor to cleanse the land in a struggle of attrition, but they are losing ground. A young man named Caim has been uprooted from his former life and transported to The Shrouded Theocracy, an isolationist nation with fanatical policies. He must struggle to survive with only an unfamiliar strain of magic to aid him. There is a secret to this magic. One he knows very little about. He intends to explore just what makes this magic special. On the far border of the theocracy, a mage scientist named Inis discovers a revolutionary new way to infuse strength from defeated blightbeasts. Using herself as a test subject, this process allows her to grasp magical concepts previously thought beyond her reach. Though she tries to document any side effects that arise, something escapes her awareness. She is playing with a dangerous force that will claim her most treasured asset if she isn't careful. Everyone and everything on the planet is a part of the experiment. The experiment is a lie.
