《A Side Villain’s Ballad.》071 Big Jimmy

"This inn is under Big Jimmy's protection! No one is allowed to stay for free, pay up now!" Rather than being angered by this, Neidr let out a soft smile. He looked over to Hazel and motioned his head towards the door, mouthing the words, 'open it up.' She nervously got up and shakily turned the knob. As soon as she did, the door flew open, and three men rushed inside. A big-boned man cracked his knuckles, but just as he opened his mouth to demand money, a knife slammed into the wall just twelve inches from his face. A skinny man, just behind him, shouted,
"Holy Shit! They almost skewered big Jimmy!" The big-boned man rolled his eyes and laughed fearlessly,
"The damn fool missed, let's see how he deals with my temper!" Big Jimmy hadn't seen where it came from, but he had to always look big in front of his men. Scanning the room quickly, there was only a man sitting on the ground grinding medicine. Hazel hid behind the door, out of the big man's sight. Confusion crossed Big Jimmy's brow as he looked down at the sickly man, but then there was a flash of movement. Another knife slammed into the wall, eleven inches from his face. Big jimmy paused for a moment and looked down at the man sitting on the ground, still grinding away at the medicine. He pulled the skinny man over and placed him in front of himself, trying his best to make his big frame small.
...
He let out a small cough and cleared his throat,
"Brat! You're lucky I'm in a good mood today, pay up three times the rental, and you won't have to deal with any broken bones!" Another knife flew ten inches from his face. The skinny man jumped and said,

"Boss! let's beat the brat!" He tried to run forward and smack this kid before Neidr could throw another knife, but Big Jimmy held him firmly. Have his human shield run away? Hell no! Plus, Big Jimmy knew this skinny man was a sycophantic coward. The skinny man was sure to run if he let him go, but it wouldn't be towards the sickly knife wielder, but rather the door. Big Jimmy looked towards the knife in the wall and bit his lip. He looked back at the man on the ground.
He shouldn't have too many knives, right? He took a step forward, hiding behind the skinny man. Another knife hit the wall, nine inches from his face. With every footstep, another knife would hit the wall. Big Jimmy did his best not to piss himself, while the skinny man was screaming his lungs out all while the man of ground never even glanced at them. Big Jimmy finally took a step without a knife being thrown, the last one had flown just two inches away from his face. Seeing that a knife didn't fly, he took a step back, then a step forward. After doing this ten times, there was still nothing. Big Jimmy threw the skinny man to the ground and shoved his thumb into his chest, proudly lifting his nose into the air.
"Ha! You may be good with knives, but you were bound to run out eventually! Now see if I don't beat you senseless for scaring Little Bob!" Just as he said this another knife, sliced the flesh in his cheek, creating as superficial wound. Big Jimmy shrieked and jumped backwards. He pointed at Neidr and hollered with grievance and betrayal in his voice,
"You tricked me, you bastard! How many knives do you even have?" Neidr looked over to him, rolled his eyes and opened his jacket. The inside of which was filled from top to bottom with knives.

Big Jimmy put a big smile on his face and rubbed his hands together,
"Well Sir, have a good day then." He immediately turned around and quickly began to shuffle out the door, just as he was about to leave though, another knife flew and slammed into the door frame. Big Jimmy turned around with a business smile and asked,
"Sir, is there anything you might require? This inn may be small, but we have the best service in the world." Neidr gave a gentle smile, making Big Jimmy shiver and said,
"I need a place to hide for a few days and some trusty people to keep watch for me, are you up to it?" Hearing this, Big Jimmy grimaced, he flipped his eyes back and forth and said,
"Unfortuna..." another knife slammed into the door frame.
"Oh, that's right! I know a good place! Plus, if you need anyone to watch something for you, you can rely on me." Neidr nodded, He stood up and smirked,
Neidr knew very well, people might come looking for him sooner or later, so having an extra pair of eyes was a must if he were to stay around this city for an extended amount of time. The only problem was ensuring they wouldn't betray him. Neidr looked at Big Jimmy's shifty eyes and frowned. Not very reliable, but it is what it is.
"Alright, the miss is wounded, so carry her there." Big Jimmy's face scrunched up in confusion, there was no girl in this room was there? Just as that thought crossed his mind, he felt a small poke in his pack. He screeched and jumped three feet into the air, turning around a vein burst in his head, looking down at Hazel he screamed,
"Dammit street brat! See if I don't beat you into pudding, don't you see I'm doing something important?!" Neidr coughed and asked,
"Is that anyway to treat the young miss?" Big Jimmy shivered and looked over to see Neidr's cold smile. He pointed to the girl, his face unbelieving,
"This thing." Neidr nodded. Big Jimmy didn't have the time to be dumbfounded, as Hazel spit on him and uttered one word,
"Trash." Big Jimmy became enraged, he lifted his fist to smash the girl's head in, but would Neidr let him? A knife sliced off the cartilage on one of Big Jimmy's ears. Holding back the pain and grinding his teeth, he said,
"Thanks to the miss for the compliment!"

Witchbone: The Goblins Winter
Themes found in these stories include friendship, found family, defying negative expectations, trying to figure out how to be a force for good in your corner of the world, doing heroic things even if you don't look or feel like a hero, and that being different isn't necessarily fatal. Summary: A spell of arctic weather. A mysterious death. The reading of a will. Strange tracks in the snow. Eleven-year-old Danny Hallow accepts his life, such as it is. His father is dead, his mother left years ago. His three Keepers are the only people aware of Danny's erratic and not-very-impressive psychic abilities. He has no friends, he's been suspended from school, and he's responsible for the life of a small brown bat that's ended up in his care. When Danny's estranged Uncle Enoch dies under mysterious circumstances, he and his Keepers are called to the town of Eddystone, New Hampshire for the reading of the man's will. Traveling four hundred miles from his dreaded hometown to attend, Danny is happy to get away, possibly inherit something interesting- and maybe find out more about his family while he's there. Arriving at the crumbling family estate of Gnomewood Home, he finds it to be hauntingly familiar, a bit creepy, oddly comforting, and possibly alive. When his uncle's will reveals that he's inherited Gnomewood and everything in it, he's determined to stay and make a happier life for himself in Eddystone, somehow. But at Gnomewood, he finds more questions than answers to his family's secrets. Disturbing old memories come to him in dreams. His psychic abilities begin to grow stronger, and as a result he becomes aware that a horde of cryptic creatures are plaguing the town of Eddystone, seemingly drawn out by the spell of an unusually frigid February. Toothy little goblins that are sneaky, vicious, and hungry. Goblins that take a particular interest in Danny. Will the emergence of the alien, and potentially dangerous, power he's inherited from his peculiar family tree help Danny survive the goblin infested winter, inadvisable attempts to befriend a terrifying boy with silver eyes, and a new school? Only if he learns to control them before they put him and everyone around him in danger. Before they convince some people that he should never have been allowed to exist at all. Before he becomes just another twisted tale in his family's bizarre history, kept hidden for centuries within the ivy-covered walls of Gnomewood Home.
