Chapter 31
When I was woken up by a staff member, I was greeted by the always-welcome, familiar screen.
>Welcome To Tardeyad!
"The party will be leaving soon, and are currently in the lobby." The man who woke me says, and he walks out of the room.
"Thank you." I try to say to him before he leaves.
I don't have to get dressed or anything, and I can just equip my Leather armor and walk out of the room. Outside, Arnold is wearing steel armor while the four others of his party are getting equipped. Apparently, they must not be adventurers like us.
"Ah, good morning, Khalid." Arnold says as he spots me walking up to him. This reminds me of something I didn't ask the other day.
"Hey, how many credits are you paying for the help?" I ask. I won't be doing this for free, even though I want to see how I fare against other members of this world.
"I'd say 100 credits sounds fair, wouldn't you?" He says, and I almost laugh. I can earn 100 credits in a few hours, I don't need to travel with these people for days! Of course, I'm not going to say that.
"That's fine, I'll wait outside," I say, and walk out the door.
Outside, the three wagons are filled with people in regular clothes. Several of them are shaking, and I think of myself as fortunate to not be affected by weather. But I still wonder, what can I do for them? I open the shop and look around. First, I should sell the armor I made last night.
Jetski woo! 2,400 credits for the five armor sets I made! That puts me at 7,600 credits! Next, I sell the sword. Only 30 credits, but let me see if I can do something about that.

In skills, I can get Weaponsmithing for 300, so I get that. Armorsmithing is also available, for 300, so I get that too. I need some more combat abilities, so I get Swordfighting for 300 and make a tough decision. Iron arrows cost 2 credits, but they are not enough anymore. If I want to fight stronger monsters, I will need to get either orchelium or demon arrows. I might as well go full-power with demon arrows, but they cost twice as much as orchelium. I could wait on fighting more powerful monsters, I'm doing good where I am, but I want to level more!
I decide to stick with Iron arrows, but I get 3 of them. I get 3 of them, and I get three more. Did I say three? I meant 300. I get 600 iron arrows for 1200 credits. I've got 500 credits left, so I also buy 12 demon arrows to bring those up to 15, and I buy 13 explosive arrows. That leaves me 5,000 credits to spend.
As I look at the remaining skills I can buy, I can't help but think I've forgotten something. I'll craft myself a sword later, so it's not that. I don't need a new bow. I'll just get Basic Fire Magic, Intermediate Earth Magic, and Intermediate Water Magic.
Welp, that's everything. I look over at the people on the wagon, and I instantly remember what I was forgetting. I was going to get something to help them...
"Hey, do you all want a torch or something?" I ask the people on the wagon. A few look over to me, and only one speaks.
"If you would have something like that..." Something like a torch? Yeah, I've got two. I get one out of my inventory at it springs to life in my hand. I reach up and hand the torch to the young man who spoke to me. "Thank you, adventurer." Before I walk back inside, another man in the cart says something that gets my attention.

"That's no ordinary torch, that's a real dungeon light." Once the man spoke, everyone on the wagon looked at either the torch or myself. Something up?
"What's so special about it?" I ask the people of the wagon, not really directing my question at any particular person.
"You don't know?" One of the people looking at me says. "A dungeon light is a torch that will never go out. They are named dungeon lights because they are mostly found in the walls of newly formed dungeons. Most naturally formed dungeon lights are looted during the first few days of the dungeon opening." He says, and I am surprised. This measly 10 credit worth torch is really something so special?

CW: Contains mildly graphic scenes of violence/death, topics of unwanted pregnancy/abortion, scientific experimentation on sapient beings, depression/suicide, grief, and trauma. The tone of this fiction is often dark and distinctly dystopian in lighter shades of Margaret Atwood, though where there is darkness there is always hope and light. On Hiatus Until September When the School Year Begins and Mom This story takes a considerable amount of time and mental energy to complete. I thought I had enough backlog and time to post it as a serial while COVID kept my child home from school, but it turns out while I can quickly write other pieces, I cannot produce the quality I need with this one at an acceptable rate. We'll resume in September when my days are much freer. Thank you for your patience and stay tuned for a different storytelling romp more suited for a serial platform in the meantime.
