《Hades' Evolution》Chapter 8 Crowning Challenge

All these questions raced inside my head until I was too tired to ponder anymore. And I fell asleep
I hope that for once, I can wake up in this jungle and not get attacked. The jungle however Is without mercy
Chapter start
I woke up suddenly in our leaf stick hut listening to foul winds and heavy rain striking the leaves when a voice entered my ears, it was raspy and high pitched, kinda like what you would imagine a hyena to sound like if it could talk. WAIT! Maybe that’s it, I met a lizard person after all. I forgot all about it as soon as that train of thought began.

PLEASE, COULDN’T IT JUST SKIP THE DRUID! WHERE IS THE NO BUTTON! ONE GOD DAMN NIGHT! WITH NOTHING HAPPENING! THAT’s ALL I ASK!
I know the reason I was resurrected was because of these programs but still, I need a single night of good rest. So I can prepare for the mental breakdown that I magically haven’t gotten yet, probably because I’ve been focused on surviving, speaking of which after reading this I only have 5 minutes! I’ve gotta wake Leo and ask him about what this is.

I quickly turn to see Leo cuddled into a fetal position and seems to have some sort of nightmare, tears are coming from his eyes with furrowed brows right above and I hear soft sobbing coming from his mandibles. I’ll worry about that later, right now I gotta know what’s gonna happen to me, without further hesitation I use my small goblin arm to give him a good slap! My physical stats still aren’t great but even with our level difference, I’m able to wake him
“Listen, Leo. No time for you to ask questions. I’m about to be teleported to some strange ‘rookie humanoid planet’ and I need you to answer these questions within 2 minutes.
What is a Delphi?
What is a Albino Lizard Dryad?
Who is Grash?
What happens if… I don’t kill any humanoids?”
He shook himself asleep, wiping away a few tears and then suddenly turning whiter as he realized what I said “You’re getting chosen to be in a crowning challenge now? RIGHT, NO TIME FOR MY QUESTIONS!
A Delphi is a white furry humanoid with yellow eyes, large feet and primitive technology. I’ve only heard of them in stories from others who have been a part of a crowning challenge.
An Albino Lizard Dryad is a further evolved version of my people who have proven themselves by winning such a challenge once before. They are incredibly powerful.
Grash is this planets Superintendent, who oversees all creatures and decides who are fit for evolution and gathers monsters with fitting classes to certain challenges!
As for if you don’t kill something -...”
At this point, I was glowing gradually redder and redder to a blinding degree as some sort of entity was trying to steal my body from my current position in reality. It kinda felt like I was growing smaller and smaller, getting light-headed and colder while someplace else my existence started to become reality and I felt the energy that was taken from me here transported to this other place growing and growing, that existence started pitifully but gradually grew to become a more stable mind and my heat returned with my vision. It all felt like I existed twice but neither was complete and therefore it couldn’t do anything itself, only when complete could my only human or technically goblin mind takes in and process it all, so I missed the last part of what Leo said. Shit
Around me was a bloodbath, it seems like the other monsters got here before I did I was standing on a shell charger that had an ice pickaxe straight in the brain. Now I’m not sure but I think that means death. Other than the shell charger I was standing on, I seemed to be in a hollowed-out clear icy cavern, you could see in the crystal clear ice for miles before darkness made it hard to see, I couldn’t see anything but more caves leading from this central village with igloos carved from ice blocks the Delphi was using as a home base, even with my cat eyes letting more light enter my eyes.

The main central village I was in now was probably around 1-kilometre diameter in a circle, with around 50 houses, so about 9 people per house. In this Large circle and even in the cave systems that lead from here I could see the Delphi, They looked like yetis for the most part but with dark blue spikes coming from their backs and charcoal black face which resembled that of a bat. They must be an early species as they mostly used primitive weapons of some sort of dark ice and their language wasn’t fully developed, making it hard to relay information quickly in battle.
Fighting them is a hundred shell charger, some still spawning in, the shell chargers seem to be on the losing end, the Delphi is using sharp icicle pickaxes which start to glow whenever they swing them which managed to penetrate the Chargers hard outer shell, Meanwhile, the Day Birds aren’t much better off, these looked far stronger than the ones I had faced but they are still built for scavenging in packs for weaker prey, not 1 on 1 combat, and some of the Delphi have ice spears that when thrown start to glow and every so slightly turns towards their target which if it hit a bird resulted in a kill most of the time.
Next, is the groud snakes, they are large snake-like creatures with brown scales and no eyes, instead, it’s using a form of tremor sensing to locate their enemies, it probably is used to vibrate in the ground to locate them but with this ice which is much harder than normal ground to borrow through, it can only try to slither around, hoping to find something, luckily for it, because of their large bodies of 5 meters in length and 50 centimetres in diameter, it could take a hit, and after getting hit, it knew where to strike next so it would usually whip around quickly to try to grab the fool in its jaw to crush it. The Delphi are humanoid for a reason however and as they dealt with the snake they gradually started to use hit and run tactics, hitting the sides it’s head was the furthest away from and using some sort of skill to run much quicker, reducing their casualties by a lot.
Next is the Albino lizardfolk who are running around causing absolute havoc on the Delphi’s trained warriors, they fought in a pack, using acid sprays from their mouth and webbing from the tip of their tails which I just now noticed have a hole at the tip, to weaken their target while running around. Apparently, the new terrain isn’t affecting them that much. Once a target was weak enough, they would signal to each other and go for a joint spear attack, attacking from all sides with axes, spears and swords. Leading them was another Albino Lizardfolk, but with only the top half being lizard while the bottom half was that of a white spider, it was having more trouble than the others to get a grip on the ground, but with more space for the organ, it was shooting out far more effective and adhesive webbing, which effectively immobilized the enemy.
There seems to only be about 30 Shell chargers, 10 Day birds, 30 Ground snakes left, as well as the lizardmen and the dryad leading them while the Delphi had around 200 people still standing
Lastly, there was me, who had barely survived in a jungle a few days ago. I had learned that I had to think about the survival of the fittest, but I gotta admit… It was easier when it was just monsters and animals. Fighting humanoids, my own kind, was a bit harder to swallow when I had been taught like any other kid that very simple “murder is bad”. So I did what any other sensible person would do, I hid in the nearest igloo and hoped the Lizardfolk could take care of the rest, no matter how much I really really REALLY want that reward, I’d rather live to receive it.

8 145The Bounty Hunter
The Bounty Hunter. A man who was lucky enough to get a unique class of his own. The class of 'Protean'. I am the Bounty Hunter. Earth as we know it ceased to exist, replaced by an archaic system resembling RPGs. I was lucky enough to get an extraordinary class, never seen before or after that. But the circumstances that led to me getting that class expanded the darkness already present in my heart. Now, I fight only for myself! As long as you pay enough, I will do the job you require me to do. Even if it involves killing and looting the dead of their riches! Am I evil? No! I like to think of myself as pragmatic.
8 82Catalyst: Avowed
The year is 605, and in your home— the country of Corcaea— the souls of mankind belong to demons. A phenomenon known as the "Catalyst" is what's to blame. This diabolical phenomenon lurks within every man, woman, and child. It can turn any human into a demon, if they fall prey to one, all-consuming element. It can be anything. Fear. Grief. Generosity. Even love. In a land where Gods are real and Corcaea's theocracy is the last hope for mankind, you follow in the footsteps of Father Richard Anscham: a deeply disturbed young priest, the leader of the Church of Mercy, and the foremost researcher of the Catalyst. Despite completing a holy mission from the Goddess of Mercy, obtaining a holy Relic, and escaping from demon-infested ruins, Father Anscham is in greater peril than ever before. Ravaged in mind, body, and soul, the solace he begs to receive from the Church of Flesh is impeded by a cruel lesson: the ramifications of a life spent sacrificing everything one has for others. See through the harrowing eyes of a man at his wit's end; through a dark fantasy tale of horror, hope, and desperation. Search for the cure. Conquer your personal demons. Welcome to Catalyst! As this is an archive of Catalyst Quest (an interactive, collaborative story), the prompts that were included with the original run of Avowed have been stripped, and the story is presented like a traditional novel for your reading convenience. If you would like to read Catalyst in its original format or participate in current events, you can find us here, on Sufficient Velocity. This book is complete! The story will continue with Catalyst: Calunoth, just as soon as I am done revising its content for here on Royal Road.
