《Solitary Sovereign》8. Chase

Yun Fei sighed as he turned to take one last look at the cave that had served as his home these past few months. There was nothing to be gained by staying here any longer. Yun Fei turned away and walked off towards the pond, his back growing smaller in the distance.
As he walked past the pond following the trickling brook that led off from the pond, Yun Fei thought of his past and considered his future. If there was anything his past experiences had taught him was that strength was everything.
In the monastery he had lived at the whims of others raised like livestock for slaughter. Unaware of the true faces of his loved ones he had walked willingly into the abattoir, only escaping certain death through the grace of his benefactor, Sun Ming.
The only truth was strength, the only law, the only moral, strength... overwhelming strength.
'I must have it, I will have it. I’ll kill all those bastards and make Moxie eat his own shit before flaying him alive.', promised Yun Fei to himself.
Gritting his teeth Yun Fei took a break, hunting a few deer, roasting their meat in order to enjoy it between breaks from his cultivation. Even though he did not need to eat as much these days as he could gather energy from his surroundings, he still liked to please his palate from time to time especially between the exhausting cultivation sessions.
The progression of the technique required one to maintain a state of circulating Qi for increasing periods of time, finally operating the circulation in an instinctive manner throughout the day even while asleep.
Yun Fei could still only maintain this state for 3 or so hours at the most and so he allotted the time before he went to sleep and after he woke up to cultivation, for the rest of the day he explored along the brook, new areas that he had never visited before.
'For some reason, it is easier to cultivate here. How can this be? Maybe it's because of the natural concentration of Qi in the environment' thought Yun Fei as he ended his cultivation for the night thinking of continuing it before dawn.
Early In the morning, Yun Fei sat with clenched jaws bearing the pain from the technique. Suddenly, he felt something move before him even though he had his eyes closed and didn’t hear anything. He decided to trust his intuition as he felt it stemmed from the Eye Technique.

Opening his eyes, Yun Fei saw that a deer’s leg that he had roasted for eating later had vanished, looking around quickly, he could see a strange monkey sitting at a far away tree from him eating the leg of the deer that he had roasted.
The monkey was wearing the likeness of a crown made of twisted plant tendrils. Yun Fei was puzzled by this abnormal sight but he decided to ignore it since he was invested in his cultivation and didn't really care about that deer leg that much. So Yun Fei sat down and started cultivating again, enduring the pain in his head.
Yun Fei suddenly opened his eyes and slashed with his dagger that was kept by his side, but the dagger just swished through the air and didn't hit anything.
"I had decided to ignore you the first time and given you a chance, but since you court death, don't blame me for playing matchmaker.", Yun Fei said, looking in the direction of the monkey.
The monkey just stared at Yun Fei's direction from the tree branch and bit into the meat while emitting chattering noises.
Enraged, Yun Fei let loose the aura of his eyes and focused it on the monkey’s gaze. Sure of his recently named move, Ruler’s Jolt, he dashed forward planning to slaughter a petrified beast.
Yun Fei’s eyes nearly burst out of his head as the monkey's crown emitting a green light and the monkey leapt off his branch completely unaffected, jumping and swinging through the trees fleeing from Yun Fei.
As Yun Fei reached the trunk of the tree the monkey was sitting on the only thing he could witness was a red ass moving farther away with a snide "Kikikiki" sound coming from the mouth of the monkey.
“It must be the wooden crown, it can actually counter the Ruler’s Jolt... If so, I must have it” thought Yun Fei as he chased after the monkey.
After running for a 100 or so meters, Yun Fei picked a satisfactory tree and jumped up to grab one of its branches to pull himself up, continuing to move behind the monkey, using the tree branches to propel himself forward.
The monkey in front and Yun Fei at its tail, used the intertwined branches of the congested dark forest to move as fast as they could, one running and the other chasing.

Even after a while Yun Fei found himself unable to cover the last bit of distance between himself and the monkey, it would always start moving a little faster whenever Yun Fei tried to cover that last bit of distance.
In their chase they soon reached an area with towering trees, much wider than the other parts of the forest and also with more branches making the amount of space to move in the air while lunging from branch to branch rather small.
The monkey pulled ahead with a sudden burst of speed, catching Yun Fei off guard for a moment but he increased his speed just a second later, wildly pursuing the monkey and set on not letting it get away. The monkey passed an open area between two very close trees and Yun Fei was only some distance behind it as he also jumped to pass from between them.
"WHAM!!" rang a sound as Yun Fei fell to the ground with a red mark on his forehead.
"Kikikikikiki" chattering sounds rang out as a gorilla stepped out from behind one of the two trees that formed the passage holding a thick mace like stick in its hand"
Yun Fei was lying on the ground, his face a beet red from anger and embarrassment
'Shit, I got duped by a fucking monkey. I am going to butcher these bastards personally. Ahh I have to be careful next time about these kinds of things', Yun Fei thought to himself as he kept lying on the ground without any movement and even stopped his breathing, pretending to be completely dead.
Although Yun Fei's head was ringing and it hurt a lot on his forehead, he wasn't in any way incapacitated since he inherently had a very strong body which was overflowing with vitality.
The monkey that stole the deer leg from Yun Fei was jumping a little and emitting chattering sounds, clearly proud of its ruse.
The gorilla looked at Yun Fei's body that was lying in front of it and moved closer to him, just as Yun Fei came in range on the gorilla, it raised its stick and tried to smack it again on Yun Fei's head.
Yun Fei rolled to get out of the way of the stick, making it hit the ground and then stood up, quickly pulling his dagger out of its sheath, slashing towards the arm of the gorilla that was holding on to the stick.
The gorilla was startled and pulled its hand back, but that didn't stop the dagger from leaving a deep gash on its forearm. Looking at the flowing blood out of its arm, the gorilla knew that it was going to face a tough opponent this time and quickly raised its guard, shifting sideways to dodge Yun Fei's dagger that was targeting its chest.
The gorilla raised its arm, smashing it towards Yun Fei's head, who had his arm extended outwards. Just as the arm was going to hit his head, Yun Fei dived ahead to dodge it and then balanced his body, facing the gorilla.
As Yun Fei was facing the gorilla, he suddenly felt a sense of danger from his back and quickly dodged sideways, "Swoosh" a rock went grazing past Yun Fei and hit the gorilla square in its hairy face.
Yun Fei quickly grasped this opportunity and raced towards the gorilla, dodging the arm thrown out by the gorilla at the last moment it had noticed Yun Fei.
Yun Fei stabbed the dagger completely inside where he thought the heart was and moved it around as much as he could and then stabbed once again towards its neck. Pushing away the gorilla, He quickly picked the rock that was thrown by the monkey and held it.
Seeing the red buttcheeks getting further away with chattering sounds, sounding very panicked this time, Yun Fei stepped forward with his left foot and then rotated his body to utilise as much force he possibly could and threw the rock with unerring aim towards the asshole of the fleeing monkey.
"kiyaaaaaaaaaah" a shrill shriek rang out in the dark forest as the rock lodged into the ass-hole of the fleeing monkey.

Yin-Yang
Mages in North America seem to have it all – typically from well-off families, and able to manipulate their environment in ways most of the world would never believe. They don’t even have to bother with the mundane details of life like housework, thanks to their sensitives, who also make a useful source for extra magical energy. After all, sensitives have no use for it themselves, and if mages weren’t meant to make use of it, then the sensitives would obviously have some way to prevent that. That a mage can transform a sensitive physically, with no restrictions beyond overall mass and basic biological viability, whereas magic tends not to work directly on any other living thing, is only further proof. And look at the way they live on their own, barely a step above animals. It’s better for them to belong to a mage. Sensitives in North America live on the edge of society and survival – typically so paranoid they avoid hospitals and anything else that could lead to being tracked, many of them with little or no education and no legal identity or existence. Mages exist, and mages want sensitives for some reason, but no one ever comes back to explain what that reason is. Waiting every day for the hunters to notice them doesn’t lead to much motivation or hope for the future. And once they’re captured, they’re the property of someone with a terrifying amount of power over them. Anything is better than capture. Mages are born to be the masters, and sensitives are born victims. Or are they? Jax’s life is turned upside-down when he’s caught by the hunters and sold to a mage. Andreas is still mourning for his previous sensitive, though, unconsciously creating a difficult standard for Jax to live up to, all the more so while still struggling to come to terms with this new reality as Andreas’ sensitive. A runaway sensitive isn’t what Van expects at the mental health centre. Is this a hunter trap, set for him and the rest of the Donovan family by the hunters? The hunters would, after all, love to see them cross the line openly and finally do something they can be charged with. Either way, Miranda’s genuinely in trouble, and he can’t just abandon her to it. Snatching a sensitive out from under the hunters and hiding her is odd behaviour for a mage – but then, Catherine is an odd mage, living in disgrace in the old servants’ quarters of her grandmother’s house, responsible for cooking and housework. Lila owes Catherine her freedom; is there a way to help Catherine achieve her own, and at what price? Tension is building between traditionally-minded mages and those advocating change, and something has to break. *** Yin-Yang includes a small amount of profanity and no graphic sex or on-screen physical violence. However, sex and gender roles and relationships within the mage/sensitive subculture are non-traditional in mainstream North American terms. The key criterion in a primary relationship is not relative sex or gender, but the pairing of mage and sensitive; given the transformation of sensitives by their mages, physical sex is non-absolute for a sensitive, and gender identity can vary as in anyone else. *** *** The way mages treat sensitives is extremely varied and, in some cases is outright abusive. The struggle against that is pretty much the point of the book. It is NOT grimdark or misery-porn! However, if you will be triggered by this, please, don't read Yin-Yang! *** Complete stand-alone novel, 153K words! Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.
