Adam esperó en la puerta de la escalera con la hoja dorada escondida en uno de los bolsillos de su túnica. Todos los planes del niño habían cambiado y ahora tenía que dirigirse lo más rápido que pudiera a casa para guardar su pequeño tesoro.
Luego de unos minutos, Adam pudo observar a la persona que estaba obstruyendo las escaleras: era muy viejo y tenía demasiadas canas en su cabeza, vestía una túnica roja y cada paso que daba lo hacía con la lentitud de una tortuga. El viejo estaba acompañado por otras tres personas que vestían túnicas negras, dichos acompañantes subían con la misma lentitud que el anciano y siempre se mantenían unos escalones abajo del viejo, como si no buscaran pasarlo.
Al ver la túnica de otro color: Adam rápidamente tapó sus zapatos; sabía que este viejo era alguien importante y era mejor que el anciano no descubriera imperfecciones.
—¿No deberías estar en la escuela a estas horas, jovencito? — preguntó el viejo con una sonrisa amable.
—El maestro Aquiles me dijo que tenía que hacer la tarea en casa con mi padre— Contestó Adam rápidamente, mostrando el libro amarillo que le había regalado su profesor.
—Aquiles ... Tan holgazán como cuando era estudiante... — Dijo el viejo con algo de enojo, masajeándose la frente con la mano— No te preocupes, joven. Después iré a decirle algunas palabras a ese vago y verás cómo te ayuda con tus deberes la próxima clase.
Adam asintió y se despidió del viejo, siempre cauto de que no descubriera sus zapatos. Con algo de prisa, el niño comenzó a bajar las escaleras. Eran 100 escaleras y el niño tenía 10 años; lógicamente Adam estaba bastante cansado cuando lo logró. Pero el joven no se detuvo al llegar al tercer piso medio; sino que siguió bajando hasta llegar al primer piso medio. Fueron un total de 400 escalones los que bajó Adam y este era el verdadero motivo por el cual había llegado tarde a la clase.

Al terminar de bajar las escaleras y llegar al primer piso medio, Adam observo que había cuatro personas que estaban protegiendo la escalera para continuar bajando.
Los cuatro guardias notaron la mirada del niño y lo miraron con curiosidad. Uno de los guardias, con mirada algo aturdida; sacó un libro rojo de su túnica, pero no lo abrió, únicamente se quedó mirando al muchacho con sospecha.
Adam ignoró a los guardias y se dirigió con apuro hacia uno de los pasillos del hexágono 3 del primer piso medio.
Adam continuó su marcha hasta llegar a una de las esquinas, dobló y miró hacia los extremos del pasillo para ver que no hubiera nadie mirando. Acto seguido, el niño se dirigió hacia una de las estanterías. Las estanterías de este piso eran bastante viejas; algunas estaban rotas, otras casi vacías y llenas de polvo.
Adam fue hacia una estantería que no estaba rota, aunque no tenía muchos libros en sus estantes. La estantería estaba colocada en la pared exterior del hexágono principal y parecía estar hecha con una madera húmeda que aparentaba ser muy vieja. La madera húmeda de la estantería estaba decorada con hongos coloridos y musgo muy verde, dándole cierta apariencia mágica.
Adam miró con cuidado los pasillos y tomó uno de los libros de la estantería. El libro era bastante viejo y sus páginas estaban amarillentas; por lo que era muy diferente al libro en perfecto estado que Adam había tomado de la estantería con cara de abuelita.
Al tomar el libro, una cara apareció en la estantería de madera. El rostro de madera parecía pertenecer a un hombre muy viejo y solo tenía una boca; en la cual podían distinguirse unos dientes afilados que asustarían a cualquiera.
—¿Acaso no sabes quién soy, novato?—Dijo la estantería con una sonrisa llena de codicia — Si mis libros quieres leer, primero mi pregunta debes responder. ¡Pero presta atención, porque si fallas, serás otro de los hongos que hay en mis estantes! Así que dime: ¿Si yo quisiera poder resucitar, cuáles son los pasos del ritual a realizar?

—Soy yo, viejo sin ojos, únicamente quiero pasar — Dijo Adam mirando a los lados con preocupación.
—¿Eres tú, chico?— Un par de ojos aparecieron en la cara de madera y miraron con sospecha al niño con pelo colorado y pecas — ¡Entra! ¡Sé rápido o alguien te notará!
El libro en la mano de Adam desapareció y se colocó en la estantería. Acto seguido, los libros en la estantería comenzaron a moverse como si tuvieran voluntad propia, mientras que la madera mohosa y húmeda comenzaba a doblarse hasta formar un marco de madera: en su interior había una escalera de caracol.
Sin perder el tiempo y con apuro, Adam entró por el marco y bajó por las escaleras de caracol, dirigiéndose al quinto piso del nivel inferior.
