《Restarting life as a peasant》Chapter 18

First thing after my order was over, I brought out some good ale for the priest. I got to the gods church. This was the first time since I got to this planet going to church. Being irreligious wasn’t something frowned upon. Unlike our world, the gods of this world didn’t need people to believe in them from fate. Even most irreligious people believed them. Irreligious people just didn’t care for their favor. Why, because priests and priestesses used their god given powers regularly. So believing gods aren’t real in this world is something like believing nuclear power does not exist in our world. You can do it but everybody thinks you are crazy.
I got to the church Priest was there. Healing some poor guy who sprained his ankle. I carefully watched him. Trying to see what kind of shape turned mana into healing mana. And draw out the shape carefully on the paper I bring out with me. I just started to use a simple fire shape, the condenser shape was beyond my league for now. When the priest is done I hide my paper. He turned to me and said “What you want my son” I respected the guy. With a respectful voice I said “I want to learn to read father” He smiled at me “I don’t have time son, don’t get me wrong, but peasants are not good at scholarly jobs.” I said to the priest “Father, if I don’t learn to read just in one day I will give the church five gold as donation.” He smiled “I really want to see that.” He brought me a book, showed me every letter, I brought out my paper. He was quite surprised “The story about your gambling money must be true, that is a big, good quality paper” he said. I said. Let's write the alphabet sir. I wrote down the alphabet and before the sun went down I was reading. The book he had was a religious story book, he let me borrow it for a week.

Before I slept the small book was over and I was a competent reader for the times standards.
Next day was Sunday The day of The Tom, carpenter's nephew and Eva, the baker's daughter to marry. I liked both of them. They were a good couple too. Tom came to the village six years ago when he was 14, and he learned his uncle's craft well. He was the one who helped us with the ex-slaves home for free. He is quite a nice guy, even for our village's standards. In the morning a surprise awaited me. Mother apparently bought fabrics for his sons too when she bought them for Ellen and Charlotte. She made all of us clothes. I was grown from 1.60 to 1.67, and my old clothes weren't a good fit anymore. I wore my new and quite comfortable shirt and pants. All my brothers and sisters looked good. We all had new clothes.
Wedding was nice, everybody brought their own table and cutlery on the village square and wedding families brought out the food. As usual lord Marcus was the guest of honor. Day was nice, kids played around tables, and youths flirted, music played. Older people and I eat, drink and converse. I looked for the new weavers of our village, all of them were here, they were healthy and happy.
Our fun cut short with the sounds of hooves. Some guy on the horseback and 20 chainmail donned knights entered the village square on horseback. I saw Lord Marcus’s face fill with anger.

Dungeon of the Dead [hiatus]
The dungeons in this realm usually do not develop truely sentient personalities until much later on in their life. As such they are unable to generate the power the Dungeon God needs to function. Plus when they do develop their personalities, they are usually sociopathic killing machines because...well...their dungeons. Because of this the Dungeon God isn't doing so hot, and in a latch ditch attempt to preserve his Godhood he creates one final dungeon that will have a personality immediately. Unfortunately this particular dungeons seems to be just a little.....incredibly stupid. Due to the dungeon not paying attention during its earliest moments it ends up being a dungeon of the undead. This dungeon is the Dungeons Gods last chance and if it fails he will be stripped of his power by the other deitys and his creations will be exterminated. As the sentient races throughout the land despise undead and seek to destroy them where possible, this could well mean the extinction of the dungeon race...

“Hello! My humble audience! I, the Bard of the North, am going to tell you a tale. Nothing new, nothing old. A story of a hero, some may say, others a poor boy who was hated by the world.” The storyteller paused as he waited, right timing was everything when telling a story. Pacing… Too slow and the audience became bored then left without tossing even the smallest of coins. If he spoke too fast and rushed the story. It would leave the audience confused and having no reason to be impressed. So like any good storyteller, the Bard has to do a balancing act of sorts. Not too slow, not too fast. Just perfectly in the middle. “In a shattered country in the south, a novice princeling has the ambition to mend a torn tapestry that is his birthplace. Struggling to fend off those who would usurp the throne in an unending civil war spanning centuries. A mercenary that left only death in his wake, unable to stave off the monotony and peace of life. He looks back at the path laden with bodies, wondering if it was all worth it. Wandering souls summoned by a madman, travel away from a wasteland in a foreign land, the first alone, the others as companions. A deity, ancient in her years, waiting to be freed from a duty she no longer enjoys. For all these people and their stories, none are the hero of this tale. No, the hero is not grand, not wise, not ready.. he was punished for nothing of his doing, who was an outcast that was unloved by many, including his father.” This was always the big reveal novices use to jump off into their story. He did not start here, instead, like any good fishermen, he set the bait and waited until the fish bit before pulling. As he saw the audience's eyes focus, he then started the backstory. The harness, that stopped the listeners from having metaphorical whiplash. The foreshadowing. “But that is not where the story starts. No, not even the hero's birth. Where the story begins, is the boredom of the deity, a deity many know of. She who hunts for the impossible, the guide for those who have lost the path, the Huntress of Mallon--” A small pause, a short breath. “--All old names for a single powerful being that has roamed the grounds of this continent longer than any line of kings or queens, lords or ladies. A being of worship for many an individual…” One last breath. And he began singing the first verse.
