《Catastrophe Teacher》Chapter 3: Introductions

"Professor Ivor is in?"

Ava stood with a straight body as she answered Lyo's question.

"Yes, sir."

Lyo is currently reading some documents as Ava answers his question.

A silence envelops the room. Lyo looks at Ava and he tries to break the ice.

"So what's your opinion on him?"

Ava raises an eyebrow.

"On Ivor sir?"

Lyo nods. Ava gives her superior an honest answer.

"He is weird sir. I don't know where you found him but he is weird."

Lyo shakes his head.

"No, I meant is he handsome?"

Ava's professional facade drops as she stares at Lyo with cold dead eyes. She internally sighs.

Why... why do I always have to deal with this.

Ava clenches her fist in annoyance.

"What do you mean sir Elcet?"

Lyo sighs and removes his glasses. He then stares at Ava.

"Ava, I told you to call me uncle when we're alone!"

Ava's face turns as red as her hair and she quickly reprimands Lyo.

"No sir, we're professionals and we have to stay professional."

Lyo sighs with exasperation.

"We're family!"

Ava squints her eyes.

"You're always trying to hook me up with your employees!"

Lyo continues his noisiness.

"That's what families do! Help each other!"

Ava shakes her head, slightly angry.

"Yes! But not with relationships! I already have criteria for a partner!"

Lyo slams the desk and stands up.

"What are they!"

Ava blushes and coughs to regain her calmness. If she didn't answer, Lyo would continue to pester her.

"I think professor Ivor is handsome but not to the point of falling head over heels. He's also an abnormality. He has gaps in his background and you aren't making it any easier for us to be secure about him since you didn't allow us to investigate him. Did you purposefully pick someone with a faulty background now sir?"

Lyo seems to stare vacantly as if remembering something but he quickly regains himself. He looks at Ava and says with a clear voice.

"His background isn't faulty."

Lyo does his best to be professional but he's obviously more interested in Ava's opinion on his looks. Ava frowns.

"But sir, what about the gaps in his records?"

Lyo chuckles.

"Those are intentional gaps. You just need to look harder."

Ava crunches her face as Lyo gives her a smug smile.

"Is this one of your tricks so I become more interested in someone?"

Lyo gives Ava a wide smile.

"Maybe."

Ava frowns.

"Well, it isn't going to work. Now if there is nothing else to do, may I be excused?"

Lyo smiles triumphantly.

"You are excused."

Ava leaves the room. Once outside, she heaves a sigh of relief.

Now... What to do about professor Ivor...

"To clarify, I am not only this class' homeroom teacher but also your only teacher."

This statement made the students murmur.

"General teacher to be precise. I will teach you Maths, English, and most importantly, how to control your powers."

A student raises his hand.

Giles sees it and says to the class.

"If you have questions, introduce yourself first then ask me your question."

The student, who raised his hand, stands up and speaks.

"Good morning class, I'm Suzaku Girin or... You can call me Michael. Both names are okay. Sir Ivor."

"Yes?"

"My question is... Will you be teaching me history as the dean promised?"

Giles remembers the dean telling him about this special case.

Suzaku Girin. He has a weak will rating and no unique power but supposedly comes from another world... Well, I have to teach him so he isn't too oblivious about our world's history. But another world huh?... I wonder.

"Yes, I will be recounting important points of history to the class, but it will not be the main focus."

Suzaku nods understandingly.

Giles quickly returns his focus to the class. He gives the class a neutral face. He was preparing to say something bad.

"Most of you might already know but you guys are freaks."

The class seems to become a bit hostile at that remark. Even Iza, who is generally kind, seems to become angry at that remark.

The will sensors on the chairs of most students start to beep as they unconsciously let their will leak out.

Gus' area is becoming foggy as he can't seem to control his unique power.

Iza's desk started to become a bit dark.

The whole class at this point had one thought.

FREAKS!?!

The tension in the class kept rising and a student would speak out any moment now.

The first one to let their anger out was a female student.

"What did you say!"

Giles confidently turns towards this student.

The female student who shouted was at the corner of the room, near the windows.

What Giles said must've hit her personally as her appearance was more than just human.

This student's skin was bright red and she had crimson eyes.

Giles repeats what he said.

"I said freaks."

The girl suddenly screams and her will spreads out.

The students, adjacent to her, move away from her as they look at her with some modicum of fear.

Horns suddenly protrude from the red-skinned girl and her hands slowly transform to accommodate her sharp and monstrous claws.

Giles smiles and thinks to himself.

An A-class transformative unique power but one that turns them into a demon. I can see why they sent her to me.

"Hey!"

Giles calls out to the angry devil-like female.

She responds by glaring at Giles.

"As I said before, I'll only entertain you if you introduce yourself."

The girl seems to double-take at Giles' nonchalance but she recovers her original energy.

"MY NAME IS LADY MORIAH TREMAIN!"

Moriah tries to move forward but Giles cuts her off with a deadpan voice.

"Good, I'm glad you introduced yourself."

Moriah's energy gets dampened once more by Giles' nonchalance.

"Wha- Wait!"

Giles responds to her outburst with a calm voice.

"Do you have a question ms. Tremain?"

Moriah's will slowly retreat inside her as her horns and claws slowly disappear, returning her to her normal bright red state.

She lost her original anger but she's still simmering on the inside.

"... Why did you call us freaks?"

"It's because you all are."

Moriah's temper starts to rise again.

"Hurts to hear?"

Giles moves to the front of his desk and he says.

"None of you are normal and you know it yourself."

Giles looks at his class when he hears one of his students scream.

"That's unfair!"

Giles looks at the one who screamed and he sees a slightly overweight male.

"Hmmm, why is it so?"

"You can't just call us freaks cause we're a bit different!"

Giles smiles. He liked that the kid was brave enough to stand up for himself.

The other students agree. Moriah smiles when she sees the other student gain the courage to speak out.

"What is your name?"

Giles asks the kid who was speaking out.

"I'm Seth. Seth Stardun."

Giles nods approvingly and he replies to Seth's outburst.

"So you're saying that difference is good?"

"Yeah! There's nothing wrong with being different!"

The others agree.

Giles nods in agreement which surprises Seth and the students.

"You're right. There's nothing wrong with being different but what if your difference can hurt, maim, disable or kill other people?"

The room falls into silence.

"Is that okay? Seth?"

Seth stammers but he answers.

"N-No."

Giles nods.

"Good. Sit down, Seth and Moriah."

The two students look at each other but they reluctantly sit down.

"You've been enrolled in this class for two reasons. First, all of you are either extremely strong for your age or have high potentials."

Many of the class agree with this.

"Second, we do not want a repeat of the birth of Apocalypse."

The class seems to pale at Giles' words since they're all familiar with the name, Apocalypse.

Suzaku raises his hand. Giles calls Suzaki.

"Yes, Suzaku?"

Suzaku replies.

"Who's Apocalypse? And why is he dangerous enough to systematic segregation?"

Giles nods at Suzaku's words but before he could reply, a student near Suzaku looks surprised and shouts with a shocked voice.

"You don't know who Apocalypse is?!"

Suzaku looks at the student with some annoyance. Of course, he didn't. He's only been here for a while after all.

"No, I don't."

Giles realizes that not everyone knows about Suzaku's circumstances. Before the student could say anything, Giles calls him.

"Hey, since you're talking. Why not introduce yourself."

The student looks at Giles with some fear but he stands. He looks around to see if he has everyone's attention.

"Uh... I'm Cal- Calmas Waslow."

Giles nods.

"Good that you've introduced yourself. Why don't you tell us about Apocalypse, Calmas?"

Calmas started to sweat as he was suddenly put on the spot.

The class knew who Apocalypse was but Suzaku didn't.

"Ummm... Apocalypse is..."

Calmas breaths in and breaths out and for a moment the class notices that the air seems to sizzle around him. Giles remembers Calmas' record. Has a gift that allows them to manipulate temperature.

Fire? No... it's more along the lines of heat.

Giles takes the time to study his students each time they stand up. Calmas is taking a long to speak and one of the students was starting to get annoyed.

"Sir, can we speed this up?"

Giles looks at the one who spoke and nods towards Gus.

"Calmas, I would like to hear more about you but your classmate is right. Sit down for now."

Calmas sits down, a bit dejected but offers no comment.

"You."

Giles points at Gus, who stands up.

"Introduce yourself."

Gus speaks out loud.

"August Derrick. My friends call me Gus."

Giles nods.

At least, he's not a hypocrite.

"Answer Suzaku's question of why Apocalypse is dangerous."

Gus looks at Giles and then at Calmas then finally at Suzaku. He speaks.

"Apocalypse was a very talented individual and had an immensely powerful unique power, so much so that he dwarfed all his peers at the time. He used to have a name but he quickly erased it when he went into power. He eventually became hungry for more power and-"

"Okay, that's enough. Do you get the gist of it Suzaku?"

Suzaku looks a bit confused but he nods.

"I don't because why does a powerful being merit a system that segregates children from other children?"

Giles stops for a bit.

"I can cover that later. Is that fine? I think that's a bit of a heavy topic on just our first day of the meeting."

Suzaku thinks for a bit but he nods.

Giles returns his focus to the class and he reiterates the reasons for the Catastrophe class.

"Bloodthirsty genius without the proper teachings. This class is meant to prevent things like that."

The class seems to calm down.

"I'll repeat myself. All of you are freaks and I don't want you to continue down this path set in front of you because your body said that it wanted to be a bit more special. I want all of you to become healthy adults that contribute to society in the future. For that goal, I will teach all of you how to control your powers and develop new ones all the while helping you curb any dangerous attitudes."

Iza raises her hand.

"Yes?"

Iza stands up shyly.

"I'm Iza Sarano and my will rating is average and my unique power isn't that dangerous."

Giles nods.

That's good. She has initiative.

He quickly replies.

"You will notice that some of you are not too strong or too talented. The Catastrophe class enrolls mostly these types of students but we also consider circumstances, backgrounds, and personalities. If you've been put here despite your latent powers, then you fit in one of the categories."

Iza becomes pale but Giles gives her a reassuring smile which the other students didn't expect.

"Do not worry. While I am your teacher, I will never let anyone hurt or judge you. All of you will leave my class as better individuals. It sounds very brainwash-like but it is true. While I do believe all of you are freaks, I'm not one to judge. After all, I'm a freak myself."

Iza's face regains some color.

"Thank you, sir!"

The class seems to regain a lighter mood and their first impression of Giles has improved.

"Now that we're done with pleasantries, time to go to the combat field."

This causes the majority of the student to be confused.

A student, who hasn't introduced themselves yet, calls Giles' attention.

"Sir?"

"Introduction first."

The student stands up.

"Ah yes! I'm Leo Dazen. We're going straight to combat?"

"Yes."

"Shouldn't we all introduce ourselves first?"

Giles thinks for a moment.

The students of the class feel a chill go down their spine as Giles looks at them with a rather menacing smile.

"Nah."
