I woke up and blinked my eyes.
Then I suddenly saw a blue window before me. But I was too tired to feel surprised.
"Welcome user ID: 000000001"
My mind instantly cleared.
[What? Which user?].
Then welcome disappeared and next page showed.

I opened messages. There was only one message. I clicked on it:
"Hello. First, don't ask who I am. As you can notice, if you can, your original self has been copied and pasted here. This world is called Pexa. Your purpose of being here is to complete my missions. For every accomplishment you'll get something, so try to do your best. Don't dare to disobey them! And one hint for you: use Help and get used to your AR, it will help you a lot. So, bye-bye, my chosen one "
[Are you kidding me?! You should do something with your ego. Fuhh... but I am still glad that my body back on Earth is OK. Earth ... The last thing I remember is ehmm... Yeah!! I was on survive training with my class, as usually, good grades for free. Only on military high school you can "enjoy" such kind of education.]
I stood up and took a look on myself, I was wearing my uniform, boots, kevlar helmet and tactical vest. Nice I have also my knife. But my backpack was missing and so was my rifle.
I tapped on Inventory. There was figure of me, which displayed the things I have been wearing. And also a place for things that were placed inside.
But how can I operate the Inventory?
Oh, the Help.
For a while, I've been browsing in Help section and I could say I understand basics.
I picked up some random stick and imagined adding it into the Inventory, and it really disappeared. And yes, it could have been be found inside.
[So now...]
"1 pending mission" showed a announcement window.
OK, why not. I opened Missions and readed "Kill 5 approaching Goblins
Reward: retrieval of your property from Earth
Disobeying/Failure: 2 hours of headache"
Time: 1 day
[Oh really? You wanna to punish me by pain. How harsh, I am feared now, mom!]
I thought ironically.
[First five minutes in this world and I already have to kill. What a nice journey.I need some time to think about this.]
Then I looked into surrounding forest, it looked familiar, yet, this flora was absolutely strange.
So, where are those goblins? Map showed nothing, only vast zone of grey everywhere around me, maybe because its unknown for me?
I climbed on nearby tree, which was higher than others and took a look around, mapped zone grown up.
[But how can I see them under cover of other trees?]
I rather climbed down, this is dangerous, what if I fell?
[So how can I find them, or will they find me?]
Except from my knife, I didn't have any weapons, no food, and only 1liter of water. I also didn't know their equipment, body proportions and how good warriors they are. Even their numbers are unknown. Nice situation. But maybe if I start a fire, it will attract them. Sounds like a plan, let's do this.
First I need a good defendable location.
I spend a good hour of searching for a good place until I found it. A small plain inside a forest with only few bushes. On the one side of the plain was also a small hill, from which was a nice look into the plain, ideal place for scouting.

I realized that there aren't any animals, no birds nor rabbits or hares, if they exist here. Only things that can be heard are bugs and something like bees. Strange. By the look on the sun I guess its about noon, sun is shining and only few clouds can be seen up in the sky. So why aren't birds whistling?
However, now isn't the right time to admire nature. I made a simple spear (stick with sharp end), and gathered some fit weighting rocks. Not the best weapons, but better than nothing.
After usage of my "precious" craftsmanship, I placed the campfire on the opposite side than the hill is, prepared the tinder and wood, took out the magnesium firestarter and after a few attempts, I started the fire.
I was keeping the fire for good three hours. Go to add wood, go back, wait, go to add wood, go back... and so on. It was pretty boring, I was about to give it up, when I spotted a move. But there isn't any wind blowing. Animals are usually scared of fire.
[What was that? Was it goblin?]
I had been observing that move for next five minutes when it's origin came into my view.
A small, green, humanoid creature, about 120 cm high, relatively muscular stood nearby the fire. It was wearing crude suit made of fur, in its hand was a sturdy club. It was looking onto recent footsteps of me on the ground. Then signaled something with its hand and next seven members of goblin scout group showed themselves near the fire.
Oh damn, there are eight of them, two with bows, those will be problematic.
Others had a club or short spear with sharp stone on end.
[Like a cavemen]
They were slowly approaching the hill.
I am glad for having my uniform, I can mask myself with it. When they were closer I can see their ugly and dirty faces. They have had a big noses and ears, compared to head. Very big ears. They seemed to hear better than humans.
I let them come closer, then slowly grabbed a rock, aimed, and threw it with as much force as I can.
But I missed.
[Fuck]
Although they were frankly searching their assailant, they still didn't know where exactly their enemy was.
[What a bunch of stupid assholes].
I picked next rock and aimed goblin archer. Rock made beautiful arc and hit confused goblin into its neck.
[Bullseye!]
Group was watching their friend which held his oddly shaped neck and choked.
Anger roared through them, and forced them to charge to this still hidden, despicable foe.
When I saw my glorious hit, I immediately decided to change position. I rushed as quietly as I can into forest, then changed my direction to left. I wanted to flank them. Nicely looking bush, standing in middle of hight trees, caught my eye. I hid myself behind it, still observing the direction, where I came from, awaiting goblins.
After a minute they ran into the forest, desperately seeking me.
The group slowly passed my bush, completely ingnoring it.
"You killed Forest goblin archer, 25 exp earned" said notification.
[So that archer finally suffocated]
I let status be and carefuly crept towards the nearest goblin. I prepared my spear, made from some hardwood, and thrust it into its chest.
However, the fur they were wearing was too tough for this stick with sharp end and it didn't pierce through. Even so, that force was enough to make it fall. I instantly changed the way of holding and hit it in baseball style to its head.

"You killed Forest goblin spearman, earned 30 exp."
[It gave me more exp. Maybe be this one was somewhat stronger]
The next goblin was around 20 meters away and a little bit forward.
[Why the heck are they leaving so much space in their formation? Whatever]
Before it turned its ugly face towards me I lept behind a tree. When the goblin saw its fallen friend, it came to him, not knowing he was dead. When it knelt next to the corpse, I jumped onto it stabbing my knife into its chest. Knife probably hit its hearth, because it died instantly.
"You killed Forest goblin clubman, 30 exp earned"
[Fuu] I exhaled.
But then, everything fucked up. One of goblins turned and saw me.
He roared and alarmed his group.
[Oh shit, fuck!!!]
They immediately started rushing towards me. I desperately grabbed a spear from the fallen goblin and hid myself behind the tree, but still watching them. They tried to encircle me, keeping their archer behind. I decided to use a tactic, that nobody would use in this situation. I turned left and rushed towards the goblin at this side, because it has a club. Beacause I ran, it made their archer useless. I got so close to that creature that I could looked into its eyes. When I was about 7 meters away, I suddenly stopped and used momentum of my body to throw the goblin spear. I am not anyhow good at throwing, but within this range, it was hard to miss.
Although the spear was very crude, because of mine and goblin's momentum, half of the spear disappeared into the goblin's chest, instakilling it.
"You killed Forest goblin clubman, 30 exp earned. Level up!"
I felt slight raise in my concentration and and maybe even strength.
[OK, one down. Btw, leveling is freaking weird.
Ahh, I should focus on the fight]
When the other goblins saw it, they stopped their charge, they grouped themselves and were carefully proceeding to me. Between us were thirty meters.
Their archer fired several arrows, but I covered myself behind the trees just in time.
[I can't use my rocks, because of the trees around and that archer which is pinning me down. And those warriors are slowly coming closer, hiding behind trees.]
[What now, what now, shit, fuck, dammit]
I' have been wandering in my thoughts and ideas, unable to think something up, in that dire and stressful situation.
Suddenly, Holy Ghost enlightened me.
I collected nearby arrows and added them into my inventory. Then with speed of lightning, I jumped behind next tree.
The archer fired next several arrows and I collected them all.
[So, how many do you still have, you son of bitch?]
I retreated for several next meters, and saw archer's quiver. Only two remaining, plus one in its hand. I prepared a rock, uncovered myself. That gave him confidence, because he released his arrow. I was of course waiting for it, so before it can hurt me, I was already covered.
[That makes two]
Their formation was already about twenty meters away, so I grabbed arrow and again rushed back. As I ran, they tried to run too, I suddenly stopped and threw rock at one of spearmen.
As the rock hit him into his chest.
As the moment made me happy, I maybe lost my focus. When I came back, I realized the archer had been aiming at me. I immediately crouched and felt unpleasant noise, as the arrow bounced from my helmet.
[Holy fuck, it was too close, shit, what a luck I have]
I didn't wait for next arrow and lept behind a tree. I checked out my hit, hee, it looks like I broke him some ribs, but that's all.
[Last arrow and only three are able to fight]
I think I can fight with two at once, but my dear archer won't spill his last arrow for nothing.
[I'll attack. Its only option.]
While constantly changing my direction and covering behind trees, I got so close that I can feel their breath.
[They should be feared, shouldn't they? I killed four of them and crippled one]
Only one tree was dividing us. They didn't dare to show their head because of my rocks.
[But I still have to be careful, one arrow and I'll be dead]
I took a deep breath and charged to enemy's tree.
[Russian style!]
When I was almost touching the bark, two goblins jumped from behind the tree, each on one side. One spearman, one clubman.
"Let's go motherfuckers" I shouted at them.
Clubman slashed at me. I just elegantly evaded it by step back.
Club is very clumsy weapon, so before it can regain its balance, I stepped on the club and stabbed my spear directly into its throat, leaving only hole behind, with blood flowing out.
Meanwhile that happend, the spearman also attacked me.
I deflected it, and slahed at him. But he blocked my hit and tried to strike me by the blunt end of his spear.
I grabbed it just in time and kicked the goblin to its abdomen.
Because of the difference between our weight, goblin flew a meter and fell down.
It didn't try to run, like it is waiting for me.
[Ya think I am so stupid?]
I checked the archer, and as I was expecting, he was waiting for me, behind next tree, to uncover myself.
"You killed Forest goblin clubman, earned 30xp. Mission completed."
[Wow, finally. So, what exactly from my property could be used as a weapon?]
I aimed spear at still laying goblin, which now frankly tried to escape, as it realized I wouldn't charge for it and uncover myself to the arrows of archer, and threw it.
From 4 meters, the spear literally pinned the goblin to the ground, how it pierced him.
"You killed Forest goblin spearman, earned 30xp."
OK that makes one archer and one injured spearman, who has already left this position behind tree. This is pat situation.
I don't have any ranged weapons, and he has only one arrow.
Suddenly, I got an idea. I equipped my air-soft MP-5 and loaded it. I switched to full-auto, aimed the archer, which had its head sticked out to observe me, and pulled the trigger. How could a BB kill someone? No it can't, but what's gonna happen when a BB hit someone's eye?
Yes, it will be painfull and even more, it can destroy his eye.
After ten seconds of spraying BBs at goblin's face, I have successfully blinded him. I equipped a club and ran towards him, he was in too much pain to realize that his death had been approaching. I swung the club and hit its head. Instakill.
“You killed Forest goblin archer, earned 30xp.”
Oh, this one gave me 30 xp too, I wonder if he was stronger than the first archer.
The last goblin was unconscious and have been breathing heavily.
I ended his torture, sending him to realm of his ancestors, or whatever they believed in.

Cycles of Ruin
Civilizations rise and fall. Kith build them up and monsters, led by powerful dungeon keepers, bring them to ruin. For three thousand years the cycle has been maintained by the Guild of Chaos and its endless hordes of minions who—in absence of their long lost creators—have taken it upon themselves to keep the realms of the universe in balance. The Guild has grown efficient at this task, but some among its ranks have begun to ponder the utility of a universe that has been robbed of the very possibility of change. Basil von Doom is one such dungeon keeper working for the Guild, leading an army of loyal minions from one conquest to the next; burning civilizations and sifting through the ruins in search of forbidden knowledge that the races of kith were never meant to possess. But having spent more than half a century in pursuit of glory and fame—trying to live up to the legacy of his father—Basil has grown indifferent towards his work. Desperate for a worthy challenge, but bound by his duties as a dungeon keeper, he has turned his mind towards uncovering the ultimate fate of the previous master of his house and the secrets that were buried with him. Now the young Master of House Doom must balance his growing interest in pursuing the trail of his father with the responsibilities that come with running a dungeon in service to the Guild of Chaos. To remain in good standing with the Guild, Basil has even accepted the task of mentoring an apprentice dungeon keeper, a young succubus named Elnora. It is at the tail end of her apprenticeship that the story begins; with a civilization poised to fall—its greatest heroes gathering for one last assault on the heart of darkness—and Basil striking up a conversation with his apprentice that will set into motion the unraveling of the universe. ***This is a rewrite and continuation of my story that was first posted on RoyalRoad a few years ago.
