《Cosmic Contingency》Chapter 36 - Learning From Your Enemy

Zaga walked towards the group of the Amari Grounds' students before stopping at the back of Aadit. "You don't seem interested in joining the fun."
"And who are you?" Aadit calmly replied without looking back.
Asif stood up, ignoring the pain in his body. He then observed Zaga. "Are you challenging him? You don't seem strong though!" Asif laughed.
Zaga momentarily frowned before forcing himself to smile. He was pissed but he knew that the two people in front of him was stronger than him. Furthermore, he was not here to fight with them. "Elvin is not strong enough for you?"
"He is strong and would definitely be able to give me a good fight." Aadit answered.
Asif frowned but didn't say a word. He was defeated by Elvin even though he thinks that he could also win the previous battle. As for Aadit, he has already fought with him countless times and he was always defeated easily. He is confident that Aadit would rank high in the next interschool regional competitions.
"Heh!" Zaga smirked. He knew that Aadit was just being pretentious. "Well, that is sad. If he would give you a hard fight then that might be the reason why our rank 1 seem bored watching."
"What did you-" Asif was enraged. He almost grabbed the shirt of Zaga but stopped when he felt the hand of Aadit on his shoulder. He glanced around and saw some students from both groups looking at him. He then pretended to laugh. "That was a good joke. Heard that Aadit?" His hand that was supposed to grab Zaga lightly gripped Zaga's arm before letting go.
"Yeah. That was good." Aadit turned around then looked at Zaga. His towering height made him stare down at Zaga. He slightly bent his body as he moved closer to Zaga. *Are you saying that he is here?*
Zaga slightly jerked. He could feel the intent of Aadit to fight. He calmed down sensing that it was not directed at him. "Yes. Of course. The top 3 of our rankings are all here. Our ranked 3rd is standing at the back.. As for the rank 2 and rank 1." Zaga turned to look at the bleachers where he previously saw Vera's group but he found it missing. He turned around and saw the group walking towards the opposite side of the indoor area. "That's them. The ones who just passed."
"The rank 2 should be that girl in a mage robe so the rank 1 should be the one wearing the mask." Asif uttered. "Are they going to watch the maximas instead?"
"You don't seem to have a good relationship with them. Are you using us?" Aadit irritably asked, looking at Zaga with glaring eyes. "Hmph! It doesn't matter. That's what weaklings do." He then turned towards the group of Vera who was walking away. "Asif. Malika. Come. Let's greet them."
--- Vera's Group (Indoor Training Area) ---
"It seems some freshmen from the Amari Grounds also wanted to watch the maximas fights." Jorak uttered as he saw some people getting closer to them.
"Well, I think that they are actually here for us. To be specific, they should be here for Vera and Cyziel." Rika chuckled as she also glanced back at the 3 people behind them. "Those 3 should be their top 3."
"Well. Let's stop and wait for them if they really have come for us." Cyziel smiled under his mask which the others could perceive without seeing it. It caused the others to worry that Cyziel might go out of control again.

The three people from the Amari Grounds finally caught up to Cyziel. The two groups didn't talk for a while and just looked at each other.
"Do you need something?" Rika was the first one to break the silence.
Asif scrutinized Rika before he smirked. He then looked at Cyziel. "Isn't she pretty weak to be on your group?"
Ru, Jorak and Vera immediately became hostile. They stepped forward as aether energy started to be leak from their body.
Asif frowned. He could sense that the two people in front of him are not that much weaker than him while Vera was absolutely stronger than him which he already expected. Luckily, the existence of Aadit beside him allowed him to stand his ground.
Aadit stepped forward. "I apologize for my friend. We just wanted to watch the maximas fight. Are you also going to watch them?"
"Isn't that obvious?" Vera replied.
"I see. If it is okay then we could watch together." Aadit suggested, causing everyone to be alerted including his own team.
"We ref-" Vera wanted to refuse but she was interrupted.
"Alright." Cyziel sharply uttered. His tone seemed to lack any care or worry. "You could come with us."
Cyziel turned around then smiled. The group of people then followed behind him as they chose a place to sit. Rika and Jorak sat on the 2nd row of the bleachers. Ru, Cyziel and Vera sat behind the two. The 3 students from Amari grounds then sat behind the three. The group then started to watch the maxima's arena.
"Who is the one fighting on our side?" Cyziel inquired.
"Let me check." Ru activated her watch as she searched for top maxima students in the rankings. "He should be Taris. Rank 48."
"The fight seems to be close but he is losing isn't he?" Rika uttered as she observed the two people on the stage trading similar spells.
"Can you tell me why you think he is losing even when they are of similar elements and ranks?" Cyziel asked.
Rika started to ponder. The other people around also started to focus on the battle where Taris was getting beaten.
"Isn't that something simple. That senior of yours is casting a weaker spell." Asif interjected but Cyziel ignored him.
"Its the quality of the spell isn't it?" Rika answered.
"Well, that is one thing but in general it is the mastery of the spell. I actually recently read something from the virtual books that was given to me by the instructors and I actually agree with it. The mastery of a spell is divided on how fast you can cast it, the control of the spell and the quality of the essence and energy The last one might be harder to achieve but the first two can be achieved through practice." Cyziel explained.
"So a higher affinity with that essence is not required?" Rika asked, turning her body slightly to the right as she looked at Cyziel.
"Oh.. Higher affinity would definitely help but as long as you have the affinity for that element then you could practice it. A lower ranked spell with a higher mastery would allow you to beat someone who could use a higher ranked spell but cannot use it proficiently."
*Nonsense. Giving false hope to talentless people.* Asif mockingly murmured. Everyone actually heard him but just ignored him. As for Aadit, he seems to be actually allowing Asif to talk for his own intentions.
"The two of them are throwing wind blasts at each other when one of them could use a lesser spell to counter the other. The problem is Taris' opponent probably has a little bit higher affinity with the wind element. He would soon run out of essence before his opponent does." Cyziel added.

"Are you actually saying that if it was you in there then you could have defeated them with a lesser spell?" Aadit sniggered. He think Cyziel was just being boastful.
"Definitely, I could beat the two of them if that is what you are asking." Cyziel confidently replied.
"Ha-Hahahaha!" Aadit laughed. He finally cannot stop himself from pretending. "And here I thought that I am confident of myself but compared to you, I really am nothing."
"Oh! You are right. You are nothing to me." Cyziel nonchalantly said. He didn't even turn his back on Aadit.
Aadit quickly stood up as he released aether essence around him. "I challenge you to a duel." He did not want to talk anymore and just wanted to prove that he is stronger using actual combat.
Vera stood up and turned around as she released her own aura of aether essence and it clashed against those of Aadit. "You are not worthy to fight him. If you want to fight him then you will have to defeat me first."
Aadit was alarmed. He did not think that someone in the same generation and from the remote cities would be able to clash against him. It was different if it was someone in the inner regions or the capital but Styrtan was literally the farthest city from the capital. Moreover, he was being overpowered.
It was the same for Asif and Malika. They finally felt that they are not invincible even if Aadit was here. The woman in front of them was absolutely stronger than them. Asif remembered what Elvin told him and he could finally understand what he meant.
Cyziel was still calm. He was actually cautious of his emotions these days. Luckily, the quiet days that he recently had, had allowed him to clear his mind. "Calm down. I could fight you later if you still want but for now, let's continue to watch."
Vera immediately retracted her aether essences. Aadit whose essences are still rushing out seem to stop going forward as it reach a line behind Cyziel. He find it odd but seeing that he was being ignored, he also retracted it back and sat back down.
Another two maxima students started to fight. The maxima from the Styrtan institute has an affinity with fire while the one in the Amari Grounds has an affinity with the wind. They are also ranked 8th and 9th from their respective schools. The fight went back and forth. In the first half, the student from the Amari Grounds was able to get an advantage when he casted a wind gale cause a strong wind to rush towards the Styrtan student.
In retrospect, the Styrtan student casted a cone of flame which was blown back by the strong wind. This caused him some self harm. The Amari student then barraged him with wind enchanted daggers inflicting even more damage.
In the second half, the Styrtan student was able to make a comeback when he became too desperate to win. He launched multiple fire balls which was countered by wind strikes. He finally casted a flaming spear which the Amari student tried to block with a wind wall. Fortunately, his flaming spear was strong enough to pierce the wind wall and knocked the Amari student unconscious.
"Have you seen the issues during their fight?" Cyziel asked Rika again.
Rika shook her head. She didn't know the problem. She just thinks that the one from their institute was a little bit stronger than the one from the other school.
Cyziel then stood up then flew down in front of the bleachers. "Come Rika. Stand there." He then turned left and pointed a few meters away in front of him.
Rika stepped down from the bleachers and went to the place Cyziel just pointed. The others just watched the two. Even the three from Amari Grounds was focusing on them.
Cyziel then created a condensed ball of fire in front of him then it flew midway between Cyziel and Rika. "Can you cast a wind breeze towards this ball?"
Did he just cast without using magical words? No. He might have just said it softly. Malika who as been quiet all the time was suddenly alerted. She looked at Asif and Aadit and they didn't seem disturbed so she thought that she was just making a mistake.
Rika nodded then condensed aether energy in her hands before pointing it at the ball of fire. "Iara Bria!" The breeze passed through the ball but it was not moved. The flame only grew stronger.
"Can you cast a wind strike then?" Cyziel asked.
"I haven't perfected it yet." Rika answered.
"That's fine. I will help you. Go try to cast one."
"Alright." Rika again condensed aether in her hands. "Iara Stiz!" The wind essences in her hands that was starting to form the spell became unsteady. It seems that her spell would fail then suddenly the wind essences stopped trying to scatter then merged to an oblate shaped mass of air that flew towards the ball of flame. The ball of flame was blasted back to Cyziel which he caught with his own hands and crushed it to non existence.
Rika looked at Cyziel and knew that he was the one who stabilized the spell. As for the three people from the Amari Grounds, they were not able to see that Cyziel helped Rika but they saw how he extinguished the fire without casting any reinforcement spell. This meant that he has a high affinity and resistance with fire which is a good information for them if ever they would need to fight him.
"You understand the first mistake now? Our senior casted a wide area fire spell instead of a concentrated fire spell even when his enemy casted a wide area wind spell. He should have lost their and then if his opponent just continued his attacks."
"I see!" Rika smashed her left fist on her right palm. "He should have used a concentrated spell from the start!"
"So you should have also understood the second mistake which was made by his opponent." Cyziel smiled again underneath his mask.
"Yes. He used a flaming spear that has a high piercing capability so he should have blocked it with a concentrated spell instead of just a wind wall." Rika answered.
"That's correct. The wind wall might have been effected against multiple smaller spells but against something that has a high piercing ability, it won't be that effected. Lower ranked spells could have been more effected. Two wind blasts from him would probably have stopped that flaming spear."
Cyziel was teaching Rika but everyone around was actually getting enlightened by what he was saying. Even Aadit accepted that he was right.
The group of people continued watching the maximas fighting and Cyziel kept on giving lessons which everyone listened to. There were even some students who didn't recognize him that thought that he was a teacher giving some lessons. Eventually, the number of students that noticed what he was doing grew and some even called their other friends. Some students who was trying to guess that the hooded figure was Cyziel like Morgan and Mara also joined the lecture. The people near the bleachers are now composed of a mix of freshmen, intermedis and maximas.
Of course, Vera's group didn't revealed that he was Cyziel. It was the same for those from the three from the Amari Grounds and those who actually know that it was him. The reason for this was simply because they were learning from him. Cyziel also started to change his tone to a different one which was more serious. One reason is so the people would listen more seriously and the next reason was so people would not easily recognize him.
Suddenly, a Styrtan maxima who recently won his battle came towards Cyziel's lecture. He looked at Cyziel but didn't recognize him.
"Excuse me. Are you an instructor here? I don't recognize you." The maxima asked. He was cautious if ever Cyziel was really an instructor so he tried to be polite.
There are currently only three instructors from the Styrtan institute here which is assigned to each arena together with one instructor from the Amari Grounds. Unfortunately, the instructors seem to ignore what Cyziel was doing and was just focusing on the duels and he can't disturb them. Unknown to him, the Styrtan instructors already knew who Cyziel was but chose not to interrupt him. Instead, they were actually even curious what he was teaching.
"Wait! You can ask later." Cyziel raised his palm towards the maxima. "The current fight is a great example of how we could use lower ranked spells to beat higher ranked spells. Everyone should watch."
The Styrtan maxima felt irritated but seeing the other students focus at the people on the arena, he also started to observe. What is more is that the two in the stage are both ranked 4 and has both a high affinity to water due to them being Ocarians. The fight started first with the Styrtan maxima using his minor element of lightning and activated explosive feet. His opponent activated his minor element of earth and scattered rock boulders around him.
The Amari maxima was trying to restrain the speed of the Styrtan maxima by creating multiple obstacles. The Styrtan maxima was not able to accelerate that fast and switched to blasting bolts of lightning towards his opponent but his opponent kept hiding in the rocks and was trying to ambush him.
The Styrtan student then started to change tactics and used iron body with reinforce fist. He started to smash all the rocks that blocked his path. The Amari student also changed his strategy. He was now the one keeping distance and creating balls of stone then using reinforce item at them before throwing it at the Styrtan maxima.
The fight continued for a few more minutes until the two exhausted their minor element essences. They finally switched to their identical major element which was water. With the two of them both resistant to water and able to breath underwater, the only thing they could do was blast each other with fast flying water balls and streams of water, hoping that their opponent would be knocked out due to the strong force from the spell.
The result wasn't really unexpected. The fight ended with a draw and the two fell down the arena after getting exhausted.
"That was a great fight but did you see how the other could have win if they used more optimal spells?" Cyziel asked as he looked back.
"Uhh...Uhh... I am not sure. Those two are both ranked above me." The maxima student answered, thinking that the question was targeted to him.
"Oh! Great! Are you going to be the new volunteer?" Cyziel was currently in a good mood. He didn't think that teaching would be that fun. It would be fine wouldn't it? The instructors do it all the time. Cyziel started to ponder before pressing his two hands on the ground. Earth essence suddenly filled the ground before a circular arena was erected below him and the maxima student. An aether barrier was then created to surround the arena. "What's your name?"
Ru, Rika, Vera and Jorak were starting to scratch their head again. They knew that Cyziel caused another commotion. Fortunately, he was masked and hooded this time so the people cannot be sure who he really is. This time, the teachers from the Styrtan institute do not know what to do. Everyone inside the indoor area has noticed the new arena and the flock of people around it, that the people around the dueling arenas started to decrease.
The three students from the Amari Grounds also have unconsciously stood up. Aadit was now confused. He was not sure if the person in front of him was actually a student or an instructor. It was actually not only him who was having second thoughts. Even Zaga who told him that the hooded man was Cyziel was thinking that he might actually be wrong. The person in front of them just created an arena in just a second. This time, it was also obvious that Cyziel didn't even speak any magic words.
*He-he is the rumored student of the Styrtan institute?* Asif frighteningly muttered.
"He should be a top instructor! He can't be a student" Malika shakingly rejected.
"Isn't that obvious?" A random voice replied from one of the students in the bleachers.
It was not really suprising that people who are not really familiar to Cyziel would think that he is a teacher. It would be more plausible to them than think that a student would be that knowledeable in magic.
"Can you three sit down!" Another voice shouted from behind the Amira trio.
"I-I-I am Thom....R-Rank 7 in maximas." The maxima with Cyziel slowly said.
"No need to be scared. We are here to learn. Can you cast water balls?" Cyziel enthusiastically asked.
"Y-Y-Yes..." Thom replied.
"Then try to attack me with as many and as strong as you could make." Cyziel ordered.
Thom condensed water essences around him then created 5 balls of water which swiftly flew towards Cyziel but before it could even get close to Cyziel, 5 precise water bullets hit the balls of water causing them to burst.
"Do you guys understand now what their mistake is?" Cyziel loudly asked.
