《Journey of 365 Days (((Kind of Completed)))》83--Magic

[Imagine you have a touch of magic, and can make impossible things happen. What would you do?]
Lol, magic is what I do best! This is hardly a challenge, thus, I’ma make it interesting by writing in second person past tense, as I’ve literally never done that before (though, I’ve never done second person with any tense). For those of you who don’t know how second person is written…well, just keep reading 😉
___________
Awakening to the distance sounds of heavy thuds, you opened your eyes. At first, you didn’t move, as your mind had trouble processing all the present, and lacking, information.
Over the course of a minute, you slowly realized that something was very strange. No, everything was strange. You knew what a name was, but didn’t know yours. You were aware that you came from somewhere and had lived a life, but didn’t remember one.
However, despite wondering if it was only your imagination, the heavy thuds in the distance seemed to slowly draw closer, pulling you away from your maddening introspection. Whatever your past life had been, it could wait until after you inspected your surroundings.
Quickly, your face contorted with disgust as you looked around the small, stone chamber you found yourself within. You had previously lied on the damp, hard floor, and your back was wet. It was uncomfortable, but you could live with it.
What you deemed as more important was the lack of light in the chamber, as everything appeared to be illuminated solely by patches of bioluminescent plants and glowing crystals that were scattered across the floor, walls, and ceiling. The air was also stale and musty, but didn’t smell particularly fowl—something you were very thankful for.
The heavy thuds drew closer.
You chose to ignore the detailed, yet old, décor that made up the creepy stone chamber as you shakily rose to your feet, unsure of why standing felt so strange.

You lifted your hands to your face and inspected yourself. Nothing outright looked unordinary, but considering the missing memories, you knew you couldn’t be sure about anything to do with what could be “normal.”
You chose not to waste time questioning whether your pairs of arms and legs were what you should have had attached to you. Instead, you practiced walking, putting one foot in front of the other to reach the walls of the chamber in order to get a closer look. You had no clue of what you should be searching for, but you did know that anything that could be used as a weapon would give you reassurance in yourself.
It was while your hands searched every nook and cranny of one of the stone chamber’s walls when you finally turned around…and noticed the dark, looming hallway that led out of the chamber.
However, you didn’t move to leave the chamber, because now you definitely knew where those thuds were coming from. Although the sounds were still coming from far into the tunnel, you hurried your pace. You did not want to meet whatever was making those noises without a weapon.
Yet, after only thirty seconds, you were ready to give up. You had searched every crevice of the small chamber’s cold, stone walls, dipped your foot into every puddle, ripped apart every plant, and even tried extracting the glowing crystals from the walls. That last one, however, left you quite shocked, since not even a full force kick to the thinnest crystal structure resulted in any visible damage.
The thuds approached further, and your mind became scrambled as tears threatened to spill from your eyes. Fear caused your entire body to shiver as you let yourself fall to your knees, hopelessness setting in.
You had no idea of what was going on, but those ominous thuds sounded suspiciously like footsteps, and the idea sent your psyche into a panic. What was there to do? Was there no way out? Was your short life all you would ever have known?

The steps sounded louder.
Was there even a point in struggling? Maybe it was all some kind of sick joke. Maybe…everything would be fine if you just gave in.
Thud, splot.
You cradled your head in your arms, wincing at the incredibly sharp pain. In front of your kneeling figure was one of the glowing crystals sitting in a puddle. That particular one had fallen from the ceiling, which was out of your reach at over three meters above you, and was cracked at the base, indicating that it had broken off of a cluster.
Your dark thoughts slowly retreated as you lifted the crystal, hopeful that something, anything would happen to help you.
The next moment, something did happen. Something you weren’t sure you even understood in the slightest, but it happened. Wisps of dull yellow light leaked from the crystal and into your fingers, causing the mineral to lose its shine.
You watched in both horror and awe as the sliver of yellow light wormed its way through your hand, leaving a path of visible lines within you, before it made its way up your arm and into the rest of your body. It continued its previous actions of traveling throughout every bit of you and leaving tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of impossibly thin lines behind, more complicated than even your circulatory system.
When the yellow light lost the last of its shimmer, it came to a stop within your heart, where it eternally rested. After its disappearance, you couldn’t help but to waste time staring at yourself as the thousands of lines slowly faded away in a similar fashion to the yellow sliver of light. Yet, you somehow knew that the thousands of lines were still present—just not visible.
The heavy footsteps were almost upon you. It was time to see what changes had been made to your body.

Author's Note: Just a fun little side project that popped up in my mind after reading a bunch of isekai and wanting to write my own. If there turns out to be demand, however, then I shall turn this into my main project and deliver content more regularly. The Dreamside Road
Five years after the world fell into chaos, a treasure of artifacts is up for grabs. The relics of the Dreamside Road offer a power that could help rebuild or annihilate what remains. Orson Gregory is an adventurer for hire, but hunts this treasure for answers, not glory. Enoa Cloud’s late aunt helped hide the Dreamside Road, but following in her aunt’s supernatural tradition offers her as much peril as power. Together, Orson and Enoa battle a magic-obsessed militia, clash with a host of rivals, and face constant adventure on their journey to find the Dreamside Road. *Updates Monday and Friday The Dreamside Road is now on TopWebFiction! Vote so people know this exists. _____________________________________ NOTE: The Progression tag applies specifically to Enoa. Also, fair warning, that element doesn't enter the story until she begins her studies. Content: Main characters range in age from teenagers to people in their thirties and older, but it will not contain gratuitous violence or explicit sexual content. It also won’t shy away from implication, anything to make this story and its world feel more real. Characters will freely allude to potentially triggering topics, including living with a disability, facing terminal illness, coping with trauma, surviving societal destabilization, and the consequences of bigotry. At its most intense, the Dreamside Road is a hard PG-13. Worldbuilding: This is not a story with a lot of early exposition scenes, conveniently explaining ‘magic systems’ and political dynamics. Readers will learn, progressively, as the characters do. This story/world has a ‘magic system’, or rather, a set of systems, but the effort to quantify and understand the truth of the setting plays a role in the backstory, as well as in some character motivations. In that same vein, not every character has a firm grasp on the nature of their world, and not every piece of dialog from every character should be taken as entirely truthful Worldbuilding. Also, this isn't the softest Sci-fi. There are at least some basic explanations given for various elements, but Royal Road does not give me a spectrum to choose from. Given the choice between hard and soft, let's just say The Dreamside Road won't be cited in any college Physics papers. Setting and Theme: The Dreamside Road walks the line between fantasy and science fiction and deals with finding one’s place in a changing world. Many of the characters in this story are United States natives and the story begins in the United States, my homeland. However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.
