《Dragons Dogma: Chaos & Order》Chapter 8: The Chaotic Examiner Went Easy on Radais… Right?

Radais Knightsbane was waiting for the stupid human, so he joined the human guild and find the rest of those stones who HE CAN HAVE HIS DRAGON SLEF BACK!

"Your Highness, Radais. " His butler Vandal was catching his attention.

"What is it, my manling servant?" Radais said with monotony.

Vandal bowed low before him. "I just wondering when will your equipment your Avatar?"

"My Avatar?" The Prince raised an eyebrow at the butler.

"Yes, Your Highness." Vandal's voice was apologetic. "When you gain a class, especially a rare class like you and your party, there are usually avatars that come with it."

Xion looks interested in the information. "Oh really? Why are you telling us this now?" The medic asked along with Larxene and the slightly bored Zeinnairth.

"Because you never asked." Vandal replied. "Just say: Equip Avatars."

The Prince nodded thoughtfully. "That is because I am still levelling up. But soon, I will be ready to take on my first quest. But before I can do that, we need to join this human guild."

The Prince yells. "OK, human examiner, where are you?"

"Radais Knightsbane!" A female human voice called back from afar. The guild examiner received the exam slip from the receptionist, glaring at the arrogant Prince. She was a swordswoman who looked to be around thirty years old, and while not exactly huge, her body was well-built. Her black hair was tied into a ponytail, which was currently bouncing as she walked away from the counter towards the door. "You're late; I'm afraid you have been marked down for being too slow. You can go in now."

Radais snorted at the woman's words. He then turned to his group. "Just hurry up and lose me, so I start up earning gold and treasure." The chaos half-dragon grinned at the thought of money.

His party members moved away, each heading towards their own goal. Xion went to church for her exam, Zeinnairth headed to the other training yard, and Larxene left for the archery range.

The swordswoman stood in front of the Prince and gave him a quick glance. She had to admit; she wasn't impressed by him. He was tall, handsome and probably a few years younger than her, but she could tell that he didn't know how to use his skills.

"Are you the idiot who wants to be an adventurer despite only being a Novice?" She says to him.

"Yes." He answered without hesitation.

She sighed. "Well, I guess you're in luck. You're the last one here. Let's get started."

He stepped forward. Then paused. "Oh, yeah... Equip avatar!" He yelled out, before looking at himself. A flash of light blinded the swordswoman, followed by a strange sensation of falling through space. When the light faded, the Prince was his class avatars.

Avatars?

"Whoa..." the swordswoman said. She took a step back, not believing what she saw.

The Prince was now a magic knight. His sword is gone, replaced by purple fire in his hand.

"So you have decided on your defeat yet?" Radais mocked at the swordswoman.

"No." She said flatly. "But I will show you why you are still a Novice."

The battle began.

"Normally, this guild accepts 18-year-old adventures after all. Ordinary 15-year-old like yourselves can't apply, but there's no problem if they're extraordinary. Now then, are you ready?" The examiner said to Radais.

"I was born to defeat you." The Prince answered.

"Hahaha. Well, let's see if you can prove it." The examiner smiled at the Prince.

Radais and the examiner were about five meters apart.

I’ll serve as the referee. The receptionist said, after confirming that two were ready.

Radais looks at the woman with a raised brow. "Looks like she’s going to be the referee. I don’t think we’ll need one, though." He thought, then shrug.

The receptionist then took a deep breath and declared in a penetrating voice, "Begin!"

Radais immediately rushed forward. The examiner held up her sword, blocking the Prince's attack. She was surprised when the fire transformed into a sword. They clashed for a moment before Radais was able to break through her guard. The Prince took advantage of the opening and slashed at the examiner's abdomen.

She dodged his slash with ease, stepping backwards. "Not bad, but I am not that easy to beat."

"Hmph. Let's see what you can do." Radais charged again.

The examiner countered by throwing herself back and swinging her sword horizontally. Radais jumped back, avoiding the blade, but the momentum caused him to stumble over his feet and fall onto the ground.

Radais quickly got up and tried to stab the examiner, but she blocked his attacks. She then swung her sword downward but Radais moved half a step to the left, slightly shifting his centre of mass. A swing downward is powerful but easy to dodge. But if he moved too much, Radais centre of mass would be way off, creating an opening for the opponent. So the chaos half-dragon shifted it slightly with minimum movement, just enough to dodge the attack.

As Radais was doing so, the examiner, to his surprise, activated her skill [Guard Crush]. Vandal taught him all about regular skills since becoming half-human. It lets one use overwhelming power to break through a target’s defences. If Radais had blocked the attack, then he would be crushed for sure.

He also saw that skill in the demon stronghold. But her using that skill right now was sheer folly. After all, He was already in dodging motion. Activating it at this moment was the same as telling him to take advantage of the Recovery Time to attack her.

She could be planning something. A trap, but Radais doesn't care about traps and whatnot. His body moved to counterattack. It was pretty much on instinct. All the experience he had in the demon stronghold and path for the 1st dragon amulet wouldn’t allow the choas dragon to let an opportunity like this slip away.

Radais centre of mass was already shifting forward for the counterblow. Moving back now would only create an opening for her, so Radais gave up the idea and swung his soul reaper sword, hoping that the examiner couldn’t alter her motion.

And as expected, the Skill restricted her movement. She just swung downward, not stopping. Now that he'd successfully dodged her attack, she was a sitting duck.

Radais swung his sword forward.

[Critical hit.]

Radais's sword was coated with his mana to make it blunt so it couldn’t cut her, but the examiner was blown back and sent flying. At the same time, the receptionist’s voice rang out.

"Match. Prince Radais Knightsbane wins."

Radais grinned. "Hahaha. I won? What a joke."

The examiner got up slowly, wiping the blood from her mouth. "I got knocked away? By a Novice who didn’t even use any Skill," she muttered, shaking her head.

Radais shrugged. "You shouldn't have questioned your betters,"

The examiner glared at him. "I'm not a fool, you idiot. I know that you're not as strong as you look."

Radais frowned. "What does that mean?"

"It means that you're a fraud. I've seen many adventurers like you. You come here, pretending to be a Novice, and claim to be stronger than you really are. That's why you're a Novice."

"So what?" Radais asked. Are humans this weird?

"I don’t really want to admit it, but since you beat me, then you passed. Where did you learn such swordsmanship?"

Radais laughed. "Nowhere. I don't even know to use this thing." He answered bluntly. "Next time don't hold back on me. You went easy on me. If you were serious, I wouldn’t have had a chance." he admitted.

That was such an obvious opening she created. Even bonus stages at the demon stronghold are more challenging. Perhaps her plan was to intimidate before the exam screened out spineless applicants.

"Go easy?" She intoned.

"Yeah human. You used [Guard Crush]on purpose, right?"

"I’m not sure I know what you mean."

Her face was saying she had no idea what Radais was talking about. The chaos half-dragon guesses she wants to keep hiding the fact that she held back.

Anyhow, this means his registration to the guild is approved.
