《Solitary Elevation》Chapter: 5 - Coincidence?

One day after I tried sensing the Mana within myself I finally gave up and focused on the external sense. As it turns out it is impossible to sense the Mana within myself, I tried sensing the Mana in some nearby plants to verify and I could sense them just fine. Though there was no ‘life’ Mana, merely a mixture of the liquid and solid Mana.

I can now sense roughly 30 centimeters away from my body as well as having a lot clearer sense of the Mana and its shape.

My Mana sense now spread roughly 30 centimeters away from my body as well as having a lot clearer sense of the Mana’s state and shape.

I also tried experimenting with my Mana control to see if it was possible to control air and fire… although Mana sense tells me I was successful with the air I I diffident feel that much with my normal senses. I think its simply harder to control the air than it is liquids or solids.

Though even this was better than my attempts with fire, I spent nearly an hour last knight in front of the fireplace trying to get it under my control before calling quits.

The air and fire failures aside I could now push a thumb sized rock around(though not fast enough to be useful) and I was able to barely separate a puddle the size of my pinky in half

After adding my stat points to perception again I tried the climbing skill on the nearby cliff wall to see what it was like. It did feel like something useful to have on a mountain after all. And I was right, the knowledge I gained from the skill and it’s level ups helped me find gaps and foot holds that I never would have before. Letting me climb around six or seven meters up before I felt like it was safer to go down.

Finally, on the evening on the fifth day in the mountains I decided to settle a major problem. Where is the sun? I had noticed it during the previous days but it hadn’t really sunk in until now. instead of a sun the sky seemed to just brighten at around five to six in the morning and started to darken at roughly eighteen-a-clock.

It was a disturbing thought that the sun had just disappeared, or even worse, that someone removed it. I haven’t really thought about how or why the world was changed, or even why I have a game like status screen in front(in?) me. But maybe most terrifying of all.

I don’t feel terrified.

As much as these thoughts should scare me, they don’t. I can understand their implications and I can understand that something is off, but every time I think about it is like there is always something more important that requires my attention, like with the…

AWOOOOOO!

…eagle.

I feel like I might have jinxed that.

I slowly look around the valley entrance as I stand up next to the tent. If nothing else I can use it as an obstacle.

Which is when a herd of blood deer round a corner from from the south sprinting with all they got.

Straight towards me.

I quickly move behind my tent and unsheathe my small carving knife, hoping they go a different direction.

They don’t.

When the deer are almost upon me I see the wolves, seven turn the corner and start after the deer.

The deer are only 30 meters away when the wolves catch up to them. The first wolf leaps an almost unnaturally long distance landing on a deer and biting in to it’s neck.

The deer falls to the ground as the rest of it’s herd charges strait into the valet. Right past me.

I stand still crouched behind my tent as the deer rush into the dead end valley. The wolves hot on their tails, now that they are closer I see that the wolves are almost as tall as me, their teeth also glow an eerie yellow.

I hold my knife out in front of me as all the wolves sprint past me after the deer.

Seriously! They just ran right past me! is it because I’m an elf? Or do they just prefer deer meat?

As soon as the last wolf rushes into the valley I turn around and start climbing up the cliff wall. I didn’t want to do it when the wolves were here in case they pulled me down, but now that they are busy going after deer I have time to get to safety. They would also have been able to outrun me in the mountain terrain if I choose to run. If I can get to one of the larger ledges near the middle I should probably be safe, unless they can jump ten meters straight into the air.

The cliff is around 20 or so meters tall, and by the time I reach the seven meter mark that I stopped at earlier today during my training I hear the noise of hooves on stone. I turn around to see a noticeably smaller herd of blood deer sprint out of the valley… no wolves follow them as they run away into the night.

I have enough time to find a ledge to sit on before I hear the wolves returning. I look into the valley once again and see seven blood covered giant wolves carry out two to three bright red deer each and placing them in a pile before they start gorging themselves while watching me.

Well shit.
