《In Search of a Protagonist》16 - First Verdict

WHY?
Everything was just fine, the accident wasn't even with Drei… So… WHY?
It is obvious that my Drei just… Died. But I don't understand why… I liked her. I was her.
Oh.. shut up Alexa. I heard you the first time. You did not give me enough time or information to do this Alexa….
Can you list the candidates again?
Right… if there is a list, even if I only have one entry, it is safe to assume I can choose any candidate at any time… I don't need to choose the last host. That is good to know.
I liked Drei, I really liked her. But being honest, she did not live enough time for me to choose her. She died at what? The age of '30 days'? Something like that. It was just a mundane life.
But… It was a 30 days life. A good one. Mostly happy. I… I… There are novels out there in which the time lapse is a lot less than 30 days. Hell… I could write an entire book with much less than that.
Let's say… for example, a narrative of my inner thoughts, despair, life choices, more despair and all that in just the time span that would take me to desperately run from the front door of my house to the bathroom if I had diarrhea at the time… You get the idea right? Anyone can be the protagonist of a story… even diarrhea.
Drei lived a more than good enough life to be a protagonist. I'm sure of it. Everyone is it's own story protagonist. But that's not the book I want to write. That's just my personal preference. I would be happier with more action.
I HEARD YOU!!
My thoughts are running wild…. But the end point is:I already lived my normal emotionless ordinary life. I don't want to write a book about another one. I don't even want to read a slice of life book. I like reading fantasy/action/sci-fi crazy stuff. So..

Alexa, CONTINUE. I want to continue.
Yes.
...
…
I can feel my connection with Drei being broken and a new one being formed in its place.
I can access my host memories. See her entire history until now. Not much actually, again, this generation is only 30 days old.
Her name is also Drei. Which makes sense… if my memory is not failing me, I will be assigned a new host based on proximity with the last one. If my first Drei died in this basement full of 'Drei's, I'll be assigned to another Drei.
To make things easier I'll refer to my first Drei, now lost, as her full name: Drei di Adel, and my new host as just 'Drei'. Or 'Old Drei' and 'New Drei'... anything works.
New host Drei's life was pretty similar to Drei di Adel's life. She was born that same night. Taken to a house. Lived there. Learned how to use Seontto. Learned how to use Ejew… but Ginna, her tutor, was the one that taught her how to. She did not need to get lost and be taught how to use the stone by some kind stranger on the street.
She received her belt-pockets earlier, the same day she received her Ejew. Which caused a lot less impact than when Adel gave the belt to her children. They did not experience the despair that is to carry this damn Ejew around at all times without the pockets. And specially, Ginna is not as brute as Adel is with her children, they were not afraid to die… I mean, be recycled at all times.
Carrying the Ejew would have not been as traumatizing as it was for Adel's children. Meaning Old Drei had a lot more love for her pockets than the new Drei.
In general her tutor actually taught her all she was supposed to know up until now. Every detail of how to live daily life here. Things that are common sense but as a new born we do not know. She did not need a Mia in her life to teach in place of her actual tutor. Ginna is amazing.

Ginna taught a few things for her children that neither Adel or Mia told us. Most important piece of information that I did not have and just learned is that 'recycle' is actually different from 'death'. Apparently, if you are 'recycled' your energy, memories and experiences are not lost, they are all assimilated into Mother, you will forever be remembered. Your history is recorded in Mother's own existence. Mother then uses the combined experiences from hundreds of years and thousands of Efalem to improve society and make life better for everyone.
For example, the teaching methods and everything. It was not always like this, but with enough experience and time Mother decided that this would be the most effective way to cultivate competent people and further improve society. You can only be recycled in Mother's city. I don't know the details, but there are some kinds of places and rituals you need to perform to be properly recycled.
It is also very interesting that you can volunteer to be recycled and 'donate' you experience to Mother. I don't know why someone would do that, but you can.
DEATH on the other hand is the loss of your energy. No mana, no memories, no experience is returned to Mother. Death means everything you experienced in your life is lost. Your very existence is forgotten by the world.
Anyways… Ginna is basically like Mia. Gentle and competent. I already like her. But I'll miss Mia. I'll miss Zwei… I'll miss the family I came to like for the last 30 days. Weird how it has only been 30 days but I already came to love them…
Ginna is a good teacher. She had 6 girls to teach, meaning the new Drei has one more sister than the previous one, called Sechy…. They are also a good family. They talk more with one another. They have a chess board inside their home. Adel never gave us a chess board to play. We had to go outside.
That was good on its own, we got to know a lot of people and make lots of friends. But it does not change the fact that Adel is just incompetent at this job.
Overall a very similar life to Drei di Adel. With a bit less fear for her life and more love from her tutor, but a similar life nonetheless. Not much else to mention.
That is, up until today. This Drei is the one that exploded and killed my previous Drei.

The Infinite Labyrinth
(Story complete - Book 1 "Shanghaied", 2 "Shortcuts", 3 "Secrets" and 4 "Sanctions") It is the 19th century, and war smoulders between England and France. Any hope for a quick end to Napoleon's rampage across Europe ended when the Great Gates opened in 1800. For a fortunate few, the strange world of the Infinite Labyrinth offers opportunities, strange descriptors popping in their minds, informing them of growth, and status beyond that of a mere mortal. The materials and power crystal they bring back foster a new age, both military and civilian. Aether-powered Skyships prowl the skies, as all the great nations blessed by the Gates try to turn the blessings of the Labyrinth into immediate advantages. But for Jonas, an apprentice leatherworker, his friend Ira, and so many Londoners, the fabled ones that walk the Labyrinth are distant heroes, seen from afar. They fell short when their Potential was measured, and they fill their mundane lives with distant dreams. One man wants to break the stalemate. The Tyrant of the Dominion of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, has a plan. Eighteen years after the world changed, he will force it to change again. And when civilians are caught in the fallout, the unthinkable happens. Six people, unqualified, forbidden to ever enter the Labyrinth, find themselves stranded in a distant zone, forcefully turned into Professionals. They know little of what that means, but they have to figure out the rules that are now their lot, for they have little hope to escape their predicament otherwise. They need to understand what the descriptors in their minds mean, what each of the strange piece of gear waiting in treasure chests behind terrible guardians can bring them. They have to become Professionals on their own and rejoin the Empire. They will figure out their new lives one way or another. But will there be an Empire waiting for them when the Gates re-open? Caught in a clash of empires and high tiers, they will do what little they can. They will step up and do their best. One way or another. The Infinite Labyrinth is a slice-of-life litRPG adventure set in a real historical setting. It's a hard, crunchy litrpg. Expect blue boxes everywhere, and the system itself is very mathy. It started life as a serial. I prepared some proper worldbuilding, with enough details and background for lots of different potential story arcs, but as I wrote, I realized the main story needs to have a definitive end. So, there are four books in total, for a bit under 1500 pages, plus additional side stories, and even maybe a sequel one day. The Gore tag was added as a precaution because there are a few scenes with some light gore.

Sometimes, even the most outright affront to liberty seems to be justified under certain contexts. Or maybe I should stop reading about Stalin, I think it's affecting me.
