《A Demon Between Worlds》Interlude: Sara

Sara came to disoriented and confused. She found herself lying on a couch in what appeared to be an office building, the wall were egg-shell white and from where she was lying she could see cubicles with spreadsheets and tables taped to the walls. It a place she didn’t recognize.
How did she get here? Her memories after she got home were hazy, almost dream-like; she would sometimes wake up finding herself in a completely different place, with hours, even days missing. Could it have been the shock of hearing about her father’s death or the declining condition of her mother? Was this just another one of those episodes? Even her past seems like an illusion sometimes… but this seemed different somehow, she couldn’t place it, but it just felt off.
“Oh, you’re awake now, huh?” a female voice said, disrupting her thoughts.
Noticing the sound Sara pulled herself upright and was immediately hit with a wave of vertigo, forcing her back down.
“Shit! Don‘t throw up on the floor!” the voice said again, “I’ve no idea what boss did to your brain, but you should probably not get up for a while.”
With extreme effort Sara forced herself into a sitting position and saw who was speaking to her. The girl was about her age or a bit younger, but the way she dressed and spoke told Sara that that that was where the similarities ended. This girl’s hair, which reached down just past her shoulders was dyed in a multitude of shades and colours, and judging by how chaotic it looked Sara imagined that the hairstylist must have had a seizure on the job. Or maybe the girl just dipped her head in several vats of paint, the effect would have been the same. Below the cacophony of colours was a face that would otherwise be rather attractive if not for the generous amounts of make-up and the numerous piercing that littered the girls eyebrows, nose and lips. And those piercing were just the ones Sara could see. She could only dread the locations of the others that the girl undoubtedly had.

The girls outfit was just as unrefined as the rest of her. She was wearing a skin tight black t-shirt that barely covered any skin, and the fabric might as well have been made out of toilet paper because her bra was clearly visible below the surface. To finish the look she wore a black and white stripped skirt that stopped halfway up her thighs, with undoubtedly something skimpy underneath. Sara did not have a good first impression of her visitor, to say the least.
“Where am I…?” Sara asked.
“Oh right,” the girl answered, “I guess the boss didn’t tell you much when he kidnapped you, huh?”
“You guys are kidnappers?”
Well the girl certainly dressed the part.
“Well, technically the boss kidnapped you, but he‘s gone for the moment. I’m just here to make sure you don’t go anywhere, but we’re not here to rape you or anything. Uh, I don’t swing that way. We‘re here to help… I think. Oh, and I'm Becca, by the way.”
Oh boy, things were not looking good for Sara, it appears that her kidnapper’s sanity was as unsound as the way she dressed. Better take it slow while a situation to escape arises. Considering the fact that she was not tied down meant that this Becca girl was overconfident or extremely stupid, probably the latter. If it wasn’t for Sara’s splitting headache she would have probably tried to force her way out. There didn’t appear to be anyone else around, so if Sara could just get this girl out of the way…
“Can I get a glass of water to drink? Or maybe some food…”
“There’s water by the back, and a fridge with some food inside. Get it yourself.” Becca said, pointing to the back of the office space, “Oh, and don’t bother trying to call for help or escaping, there’s really no point. There’s no phones here that work, and the doors are locked, so just stay here for a while and the boss’ll explain the situation when he’s back.”

“Who is this boss person you keep on mentioning?”
“He’s the guy I work for.”
“For a company I assume?”
“Something like that.”
“And what do you guys do?”
“Work!” Becca said, the irritation clear in her voice, “Fuck! Why do you ask so many god damn questions?”
Sara didn’t answer, she knew the situation she was in and annoying her captor any more was probably not a good idea. Feeling a little better Sara got on her feet and made her way towards the little fridge at the back, making mental notes of the areas layout in case she had to escape quickly.
She grabbed a chocolate bar, filled a tiny paper cone with water and drank before making her way towards the window. She wondered if she could make out her location from the landmarks, but as she peered down into the busy streets below she realized she didn‘t recognize anything. This place could be anywhere. Sara scanned below for a street name or two, but as she did something caught her eye. A quick blur of movement at the edge of her sight, like someone‘s shadow speeding past. She was about to dismiss it when she saw another, and before she could turn around she noticed that the whole street below was filled with dark, flowing shadows.
“Becca…” she said, her voice barely a whisper, “I think you should see this…”
“What?” Becca replied, making her slow way towards the window.
“That…”
Becca peered down where Sara pointed and her face turned ashen white.
“Oh shit.”

The Cosmic Interloper
Synopsis: A cyborg transhuman escapes her corporate indenture and through unfathomably unlikely circumstances, she ends up in a fantasy world of full of unique magic, angry people with sharp implements, and the whole flavor-spectrum of divine entities. Hilarity ensues. Features: - No blue boxes or cultivation, this is not a LitRPG nor about martial arts - Hard-ish Sci-Fi meets hard-ish magic - Generally trying to keep this "rational" Rationale: My primary goal with The Cosmic Interloper is to write something that I myself would enjoy reading. Of course, that’s not the only motivation, but I think it’s the most important one for me to keep in mind, especially as the author. In fact, this whole story came about because after consuming oodles of fiction, I found myself craving a very specific type of story which I couldn’t find many examples of. Then I asked myself, “why not write it myself?” and here we are. Disclaimer: In general, while I’m not writing a comedy, I do intend for this story to be funny and a bit wacky or absurd. That said though, I am using this story as a vehicle to explore some potentially dark topics including (but not limited to) slavery, speciesism/racism, and existential questions of self, consciousness, and identity. Still, I’m going to leave the “traumatizing content” tags off, because I don’t feel that what I’ve written so far (or plan on writing) exceeds the threshold that would be necessary for me to tag it thusly. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way she views the world is not the objective truth (if such a thing even exists).
