《The One and Only》7. Gathering Water to Form a Stream, Flowing like Wind

There were five levels of the Pure Yang Script, as Lin Yun expected.
Compared with Flowing Wind Swordplay, Lin's progress in Pure Yang Script was too slow. After three days, he was still at the first level.
For a kung fu practitioner, the root bone was fundamental.
The root bone meant the kung fu practitioner's constitution. Lin Yun only had a common mortal body whose state was even worse than a common one's.
Except the root bone, one had to rely on external things.
Commonly speaking, external things mainly referred to pills, also counting the places with abundant spiritual energy, where the practitioner could greatly improve his efficiency.
Qingyun Sect was a place abundant in spiritual energy, but it had already been taken up by the elders and inner disciples.
Lin Yun didn't have a good root bone. And he had neither a place with abundant spiritual energy nor any pills.
So he failed to quickly learn Pure Yang Script.
But still he didn't waste these three days. He made great progress of his Flowing Wind Swordplay.
Such kind of martial arts that needed savvy was no difficulty for him.
Also his Tiger Fist didn't fall behind.
The swordplay was a skill to kill, the martial art was for cultivating inner power, and Tiger Fist helped him to consolidate the body. Practice of each item was indispensable.
Before the cabin, Lin Yun spread his palms, with the center of his palm against the sword hilt, and the tip touching the ground.
With a slight growl, the sword began to rotate fast in his palm.
But the top of the scabbard wasn't inserted into the ground with the rotation.
"Not yet…"
Lin Yun closed his eyes, murmuring, felt the sword in his palm, letting his inner power integrate into it.
Whoosh!
A wisp of wind came from nowhere, blowing Lin Yun's long hair before his forehead.
"Swords Rotating to Make Winds!"
Lin Yun suddenly opened his eyes with bright sparks, suddenly grasping the hilt.
So heavy!
Suddenly a kind of great power accumulated before came out of the sword and dragged Lin Yun's body onto the ground.
Thanks to his Tiger Fist, Lin Yun steadied himself, and lifted the sword.
Whoosh!
The moment Lin Yun pulled up his sword, his body was dragged to dash ahead out of his control.
He and his sword rushed forward over six meters.
The scabbard directly pierced over one inch deep into the rock ahead, and then many cracks appeared in the rock.
Lin Yun felt like his whole energy was pumped dry, which made him very tired.
He wiped the sweat from his forehead, looking at the sword inserted into the stone and pondering.
Swords Rotating to Make Winds!
That was one of the three deadly moves of Flowing Wind Swordplay. It showed such great power the first time he used it.
No wonder it had such a high standard of one's talent.
"That's what it means, to make winds with the sword. The moment the wind rises, I can double the power I accumulated."

Lin Yun was analyzing it calmly. The sword was still in its scabbard this time. If the sword was out, it'd be much more powerful.
But it was a little difficult to use.
"If fighting with men, I'd already lose before the wind rises."
He needed more practice. When he could use it at his own will, he could show its greatest power in real fighting.
"If I practice by myself, this is the top level I can get to. To go further, I need a chance to go to the Trigger Hall to fight the fighting against puppets. Or I can go out to have real fights. Both can help me improve my swordplay.
Lin Yun whispered to himself. He wasn't overjoyed with that little achievement he had made.
A moment later, he made up his mind. To go out to have real fights!
The Trigger Hall might be a good choice, but he needed money to go in. So it would be possible for him because he was penniless now.
To have fights outside, firstly, he could accumulate experience; secondly, he could kill beasts to exchange for money or some pills.
Now he urgently needed pills to improve his Pure Yang martial art.
Otherwise his swordplay would be nothing if his cultivation stopped.
Hengyun Mountains lay behind Qingyun Sect, spreading endlessly through many kingdoms. It was only a small part in Skywater Kingdom.
But only this small part was one third of Skywater Kingdom already.
Apart from Qingyun Sect, there were other three sects. Together they were called one school and three sects. They were Raging Knife School, Qingyun Sect, Ziyan Sect and Xuanyang Sect.
Most of their disciples liked to experience in Hengyun Mountains.
Lin Yun was restricted for his sword slave identity, so he barely had a chance. But now he could go anywhere as he wanted.
After the simple packing, Lin Yun went out.
Hengyun Mountains were right behind Qingyun Sect, not very far. It was less than an hour and he already went in.
There were lots of dangerous beasts in the woods. If he went in deeper, he might even meet evil beasts.
Compared with beasts, those evil beasts absorbed spiritual energy from heaven and earth, got demonized and mutated little by little. They were extremely powerful.
Even the weakest evil beasts had the power of fifth level of Martial Practice.
But now Lin Yun only reached the third level. So he would be dead meat if he met an evil beast.
Lin Yun, who didn't want to meet any evil beast, was walking in the mountains very cautiously, looking for any beast that was left alone.
The skins, claws, blood and flesh of beasts in here were all valuable, which meant a considerable income to Lin Yun now.
But all the way he only saw beasts in flocks.
So, Lin Yun who was alone could only give up and wait another chance.
Babble~
"Sound of water?"
Following the sound, he saw a stream converging into a river. The water rippled over the stones, making ringing and melodious sound. It ran all the way down, bringing a refreshing breeze.

"Gathering water to form a stream flowing like wind. Flowing Wind Swordplay… flowing water like wind…"
There were sparks in his eyes. Suddenly, something hit his head. "Is it possible the so-called Flowing Wind Swordplay doesn't refer to flowing wind but water flowing like wind?"
No wonder no one in Qingyun Sect had ever succeeded in practicing it.
Maybe this was the problem.
With eyes closed, thinking of every move of the Flowing Wind Swordplay, Lin Yun was immersed in his thoughts.
A moment later, he pulled out the sword and jumped into the water.
With a plump, he fell into water, and then the torrents swept him down. He got wet all over.
Then he climbed to the bank, and didn't mind it at all.
After wiping the water off his face, he jumped into the water again. He kept doing that with no fear.
Nobody knew how many times he failed. A hundred times? Or a thousand times?
Lin Yun was badly battered in the water, feeling sore all over, and nearly getting numb.
"I did it!"
After having tried constantly, Lin Yun finally made it. Now he could stand still in the water, however hard the stream or the wind pushed him.
Lin Yun smiled with a slice of joy, and then began to practice his swordplay.
"Gathering water to form a stream flowing like wind…"
Standing in the flowing stream, Lin Yun danced with his sword and felt the breeze the flowing stream brought.
He jumped out of water as swift as a rabbit. His swordplay became one with the streams and breeze.
Swish! Swish! Swish!
He jumped along the streams, waving the sword. He lost himself in practicing the swordplay.
He felt like that he had changed into the wind and flowed with the stream.
Finally, the streams converged into a clear lake on the hillside.
Lin Yun kept flowing with the streams all the way. The moment he fell into the lake, the sword under his palm began to rotate like crazy.
And when he nearly fell down, he growled, suddenly grasped his sword and stabbed forward.
"Swords Rotating to Make Winds!"
All of a sudden, the power in the sword threw him up in the air. Like a bird, he kept jumping on the surface of the lake.
Wherever the sword went, the wind it made aroused two rows of water walls.
The lake surface which was nearly 100 meters wide was torn apart and then the water in the air fell down. Hua!
When he looked back, the sprays were hitting the surface of the lake, like thousands of beads beating the jade plate.
One move could stir up a lake of a hundred meters wide. His Flowing Wind Swordplay did get somewhere now.
Lin Yun whispered, "It seems more powerful than recorded. I guess the swordplay in Qingyun Sect is not original. Some parts are missing."
Today he learned the true meaning of the swordplay in the water accidentally, and made up the missing parts.
On hearing some roaring sound, Lin Yun turned his head and saw three brown Iron Claw Wolves jump out.
They might have gotten alerted by the sound of the water when looking for prey, and finally found Lin Yun here.
Iron Claw Wolves were extremely fierce, with their claws as hard as iron and sharp as hell.
They could easily open a martial practitioner's chest and pulled out all internal organs with their claws.
And they always showed up in groups. They were one of the dominant here. Lin Yun had met them before and run away.
But now he wanted to have a try of his swordplay.
Lin Yun stayed extremely alert, holding his sword and trembling a little bit.
He kept high-strung now not because of fear but because of excitement.
It seems that the three Iron Claw Wolves also felt Lin Yun's strong presence, so they didn't take rash action. They were just staring at Lin Yun, roaring, with a smell of blood pervading in the air.
If Lin had been an ordinary man, he could have already been scared to death on facing them.
One man and three wolves, no one moved. It seems like stalemate, but actually they were sounding out each other.
Lin Yun knew that he had one and the only chance. If he failed to kill them all at one fell swoop, one of them would tear his chest open.
He only had one chance, and it must be successful!
With one glance, Lin Yun noticed that the leading wolf was a little impatient, which could be found through its eyes.
Lin Yun stepped forward. He took action!
Three Iron Claw Wolves jumped at him at the same time.
Lin Yun looked calm, but his moves were as fast as the flowing stream...Wind rose…the sword moved along the wind. At that very moment, blood of the three wolfs flew in the air.
Lin Yun fell on the ground steadily, with three ugly wounds in his left arm.
Bang! bang! Bang! Three Iron Claw Wolves fell on the ground.
He turned around and saw that on each wolf's neck was a finger-wide hole, with blood pouring. They were all dead.
He walked to them and checked.
Lin Yun muttered to himself, "I underestimated the leading wolf's reaction. If more precisely, I wouldn't let it hurt my arm."
After putting away his sword, Lin Yun took out a dagger and cut off all their claws.
Since the fur and flesh were not worth much and too heavy to take, he chose to give up.
"Flowing water like wind. This fight shows I'm on the right path."
On the third level of Martial Practice, he killed three Iron Claw Wolves, which gave him much confidence!

Ars Magica
Our vision comes back into focus. Our eyes, while being able to perceive the immediate surroundings, still leave us with our minds uncomprehending towards what is actually occurring. Sure, there are definitive things that we can focus on, like the fact that we're either out upon the open sea or the open ocean, there not being much of a difference with no land in sight, as well as the fact that we appear to be upon a haphazardly constructed metal boat, whose seams are barely able to keep a hold of themselves in the crashing waves. However, that does not let us understand what exactly is causing the waves in the first place. If we were to rewind time, we'd find ourselves upon a calm sea under a peaceful sky with the only difference, being a small whirlpool that would be the precursor towards this uproar around the boat. Lightning flashes in the sky, with no clouds being near, and anyone actually manning the boat has either died towards the cause of the smashing tides in the first place, or are fighting amongst the flashes of lightning, all while trying not to become devoured, demolished, and utterly decimated by the beast roiling in the whirling waves. To better understand exactly what is happening here, there is one singular event that needs to be understood, that needs to be explained, and that is the arrival of a creature named Dave. Stepping back from current events and going towards this creature's first appearance in the world, we begin to hear the sound of water slowly dripping across rocky ground. The cavern is utterly silent except for this one constant, its cause feeding channels downwards, sloping towards cracks in the rubble along the floor from broken stalagmites and stalactites. And there, lying on top of something which had fallen over recently, judging from its cracks, is a person, the creature named Dave. His form is fast asleep, either from the impact or from an intoxication, judging from the smell upon its breath. A bright light suffuses into it for a second, giving life towards the pale skin, before it slowly dies down back to the comfortable black of the cave that it's within. Before this moment in time, Dave did not exist in the physical world. At least, not in the reality that he finds himself born into. We do not know whether or not his existence is simply a cosmic joke, or something that is being played out on purpose. All that we do know, is that one moment, the body was not in the cave, and simply formed in the next. The actual earliest time that we know Dave exists, is the interpolation of the memories of J-209, which we'll begin looking into shortly to gain context towards the coming narrative that is being written and hastily trying to keep itself written. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warning: This story has several things which might turn its readers away. The first is that this story has shifting points of perspective. Don't worry about that previous sentence too much though, as the main character will always have a first person perspective associated with them. However, any other character from which we're viewing the story from will either be in third-person, as we are not necessarily in their shoes at the moment, or in first person, given that the narrator is an actual physical presence within the story. For the most part, chapters will be self-contained with their perspectives, so there will not be an abundance of switching perspectives within the same chapter. The most that an average reader would have to worry about is the fact that perspectives can switch between chapters. The second thing is that the main character is a bit on the 'special' side of things. He's not exactly mentally there most of the time, so there will be some times that his personality or his thoughts do not actively align with his actions. The third, and final thing of importance, is the fact that past the first couple of chapters, nothing has been planned in advance. There are arcs and plots that I want to do, want to implement, or have already been set into motion from our main character's introduction to the world, but the method that I use for my story writing and generating leads towards a bit more random chance being enabled. Basically...there's a lot of dice rolling behind the scenes. To not complicate the story further than its regular LitRPG elements, the rolls will not be publicly available. However, there will be knowledge within the author's notes on whether or not there were positive or negative critical rolls that had occurred within the chapter. You have been warned. Updates: Mondays & Fridays (Schedule permitting) Typical Chapter Length: (2,000-3,000)
