《Not A Fairy Tale》Arc 5 - Chapter 9

With my long furred arms dragging across the floor I approached the two goliaths, hunched over with drool running down my lower jaw and dropping onto the floor of the underground temple. A low growl escaped my maw on accident. Before either of the two goliaths could stand up and attacked me I grabbed them by the head and hit them into each other. I heard the cracking of their skulls as I hit their heads against each other over and over, again and again. When I was done their heads were nothing but bloody stumps. On instinct, I tried to eat them but even with the ability of werewolves to eat a human in what was basically a single bite, there was no way I had enough time to eat these two creatures.

I turned my head towards the rest of the battlefield, letting out a loud roar that put those of a goliath to shame. And with that, I rejoined the fray and began tearing apart any enemy that came in my way as I charged towards the mammoth that Altair was still fighting. He seemed to be cornered and didn't use magic at all. When I got closer I saw them, about ten arrows stuck in his back, all of them resembling the one arrow that had made Smoke's smoke figure disappear. I let out yet another roar, alerting the mammoth and its rider.

The eyes of the woman widened as I leapt towards her, putting all the strength I had into this jump. With both arms stretched out as far as possible I flew through the air and tried to grab her off the mammoth. But at that moment the mammoth reared and I crashed right into its furry side, bringing it to the ground along with me. Some of my claws had nearly snapped in half the moment I crashed into the mammoth.

While I was on the ground I looked over to Altair. For a second he looked a little confused but then that look just turned back to his usual indifference as he nodded at no one in particular. He then just began pulling the arrows out of his back. I wanted to go to him but I couldn't, the mammoth stood up, completely ignoring the fact that I currently lay on it. I simply rolled off of the large creature. Now that I was this close to it I noticed how tall it was.

"Now now little wood elf seems like your lycanthrope friend here wants to help you!" the woman on top of the mammoth said loudly, with such a fake bittersweet voice.

She got no answer from Altair. He simply continued plucking the arrows out of his back now that he finally had time to do so.

And I did my part, keeping the mammoth from approaching him again. With all my strength I pushed against the mammoth but it didn't budge at all. Instead, it raised its long trunk and let out a haunting yowl that sounded similar to a loud groan. I kept pushing and pushing, hearing the ground beneath my feet crack as they dug in deeper and deeper. My roar echoed through the underground temple and drowned out all the screams from the battle that surrounded us but the mammoth still didn't budge.

"Oh, a youngling such as you could never push over my sweet Gabiru like this, your earlier attack was simply a fluke!" the woman atop the mammoth giggled.

I changed strategies, instead of trying to push the mammoth over I tried climbing it, digging my claws deep into its side. At first, I had trouble getting through its thick skin but eventually, I got the first claw in.

"What do you think you're doing?!" the woman yelled.

I couldn't see her but before my inner eye, I could see her angered and annoyed expression quite clearly as if I had seen it many times before.

"Gabiru! Burry that insolent wench!" the woman yelled.

My eyes widened as I realized what was about to happen. The mammoth, Gabiru, leaned over and fell onto me. The creature was heavy, heavier than anything I had ever lifted in my entire life. I felt crushed, all I could do was gasp for air that I didn't get. I felt as if I would hear my bones break at any moment. That was when I heard a loud sigh.

"Finally, damn anti-mana," I heard Altair say, followed by a gurgling sound and a scream that came from the woman that had just mocked me.

"Now for that big woolly shit..."

I felt the weight on me reduced in an instant and slowly but surely I could breathe again. More and more light flooded towards my eyes and I could finally see something besides darkness again. And there he stood, Altair, lifting up the mammoth I couldn't even push over as if it was nothing.

"What a bother," he said as he leaned back a little and threw the entire mammoth towards the drake.

I looked over to the drake and looked as it opened its massive maw slightly and the mammoth landed inside.

"Get back, I'm gonna take care of that overgrown lizard over there," Altair said as he helped me up.

Despite being actually taller than he was I felt so small compared to him... and whatever the thing in his shadow was.

"Arva, you ready to come out yet?" Altair asked as he turned away from me. "Guess not then..."

He disappeared inside a cloud of black and dark green energy.

I reached for him right as he disappeared, wanting to talk, wanting to thank him... but in this form, the closest to talking I could do was growling. A low growl escaped my maw as I took a look at the battlefield. Commander Lestul was still fighting against Barion, who was one of the few enemies we still had left. Of the few thousand soldiers the enemy army once had were maybe a few hundred left while we had still more than a thousand on our side. It seemed like this fight was nearly won.

"[Salamander: World of Flames]!" Elsa yelled loudly.

The few hundred soldiers that the enemies still had left turned into a few dozen in nearly an instant, consumed by a wave of flames that none of them could have even dreamed to escape. Now that the battlefield was comparatively empty the heavy hitters could go all out, as Elsa had just proven, since most of our soldiers were in the back of the temple, resting, as mages like Smoke or sorcerers like Elsa protected them. I saw thorn tendrils bursting from the ground and rushing towards the drake, Altair looking up at it, both hands in his pockets.

"We have nearly won this fight!" Elsa yelled loudly, her voice enhanced.

War cries from our side supported her claim.

"Oh no, you haven't!" Barion yelled. "Guess this is the time for last resorts, Belgas, burn friend and foe alike!"

A loud roar came from the dragon as its eyes lit up and flames began sprouting from the hole in its tail in a shape that nearly resembled a flower, a terrifying flower.

"And it's time for me to show you another side of myself!" Barion said as mana suddenly burst forth from his entire body, glowing in a menacing orange.
