《Life as a mercenary (Abandoned)》Ch 1 - When they came.

It all happened that day...that dreadful day...I was only seven at the time...a child still oblivious to the world's anguish. This is how it all started.
Just another normal day... that is what it should have been. I woke up to my father heading out to work, in his military sergeant uniform. My mother preparing breakfast for me and my five year old sister who was still asleep upstairs. We lived in a common home. Two storeys with four rooms per storey, kitchen, living room, bathroom and my father's office downstairs with three bedrooms and another bathroom upstairs. Currently in the living room I was climbing down the stairs to see my father walking towards me, my mother behind him with her usual motherly expression...full of love and expectation but also something else...the usual worry a mother has...for both her husband and children. My father kneels in front of me with a beaming smile, his ginger hair and moustache making his smile look ridiculous as always. He stared at my sleepy green eyes with his expectant blues, while ruffling my similarly coloured hair albeit more red. His usual phrase escapes his mouth "Good morning player! Ready for another day of school?"
He always took me to school before he headed to work, he actually loved doing it. Like it was his way of making up for not always being there due to his work, as the only time I'd actually see him is in the morning. I wipe the sleep from my eyes and beam a mischievous smile at him "Ready to roll sir!" my usual childish answer. He laughs and turns to my mother "I'll go get the car ready" he stands up and walks to her, grabbing her by the waist while she tries not to drop the plates from her hand.My mother's green eyes switching glances between me and him, her long brown hair under attack by dad's hand. "Drive carefully Blake... you know Matthew doesn't like it when you go too fast.." she kisses him as I childishly cringe. "You worry too much Jean, boy loves going fast!" he happily exclaims while turning to the door "I'll be outside Matt". In a hurry I ate breakfast right as my sister Liana came down to join us, coming to sit next to me to eat. She went to a different school than me so my mother took her in the morning, currently my mother was trying to tie Liana's red hair in a pony tail while she ate. She always did this... trying to finish eating before me.. unsurprisingly I finished first and ran upstairs while her green eyes glared at my back.

After taking a shower and putting on my school uniform I went back down to head out, waving at my mother and sister from the corridor I ran to the door and then outside. Our neighbourhood was simple enough, houses just like ours lined the town. As I exited I looked to the right where my father was locking the garage after taking out the car...he was a fanatic when it came to military vehicles... somehow our family car ended up being an armoured green Humvee, no attachments of course as that is illegal. Although dad did have his military issued pistol a SIG sauer P226 ,he also kept a personal one locked inside the Humvee being a Browning 9mm. Being the child I am and the son of a soldier I was also quiet fascinated by weapons, mainly side arm guns, I had begged my father to show me how to use one but he always ended my whining with saying; "A weapon is nothing more than a tool, but when recognised as a weapon it is often seen differently. When you're older ask me again, then we will see." at the time I did not understand what he meant...
I walked over to the car and dumped my backpack into the back seat, riding shotgun as always. My father was already in the car starting it up, he then went on to start his "small chat" while we drove to school. "How you been doing at school Matt? I hear your grades are averaging compared to your usual high?" he strictly questions me while keeping eyes on the road. I would have answered but... I was too busy staring at the awkward distortion in the sky above the road to the left that went through another neighbourhood. It was a strange thing, like the air within that area was compressing and swirling. My father glanced at me when I didn't answer , he didn't see it. "You alright there Matt? what are you looking at?" He tries to follow my gaze with his as he happens onto the distortion himself."What is that?.." he slows down the car and turns to park. Suddenly as if the distortion had exploded...a shockwave of air burst forth from it in every direction. Homes were thorn apart and vehicles thrown as the distortion grew and expanded ten times fold, taking colour in green and grey.

All hell let loose.
Our car was also thrown back landing inside a house, the first floor wall was completely crushed by the Humvee. We couldn't drive away though, the car was upside down with us inside. I was drifting between consciousness while my father shuffled out of the car to the outside of the house, he bent back down to check on me. Then we heard them... Hungering shrieks... Human screams... People ran to and from homes running away from the street under the distortion in the sky, we couldn't see what freaked them out so much as the road was hidden behind the other houses on the other side of this road. My father shuffled to his side to unholster his gun, he shouted back at me "Stay inside Matt! Don't come out!" but I could barely understand him. He stood there with his P226 held up while he looked around at the others running, fear plastered on their faces. "Hey! What's the hell is going on!?" he asked a passing aged man, the man stopped for a moment as if to answer...but no such thing was permitted...Before the man could fully make out a single word he was thrown to the ground while the beast lumbered over his body. A wolf sized monster standing over the man on all fours, grey skin...no,shell like outer body...A scorpion like tail up to a canine like torso with shell like armouring, four spider like legs with seven sharp claws at the end...the head though..was the most terrifying..The actual head was like an ant's but instead of mandibles it had a jaw that opened up showing off long sets of fangs.
The beast devoured the man from his torso while he screamed and cried for help, only to be silenced by the beast impaling his face with its tail. I couldn't see the carnage from where I hid but..the screams and sounds of it eating was enough to make breakfast come back out.. My father stood there shocked for a moment but when the beast's tail impaled the man's head he was shook out of it, he didn't wait any longer. One...Two...Three...Four...Five...Five shots were aimed at the creature...Each were deflected by its thickly armoured body, as bullets shot in every direction one scratched the Humvee's side making me let out a slight whimper. My father glanced back at me in worry, only to disappear from view right after. The beast pounced at him in retaliation from having its meal interrupted, it shrieked as it wrestled him down. Three more shots were fired before a resonating crunch was heard...It impaled him with its tail. A hand fell limply in sight from were I stood...from where I hid...tears falling down over my red cheeks... my every particle trembling from fear...As I watched...As I listened...Two more creatures came into view on the street...Then another five...eight...fourteen..they swarmed the streets heading in every direction..each being from slightly to completely different from the other...with one thing in common..their eyes..bright green eyes..hungering for even more...
As I fell into unconsciousness...I heard more shots being fired...more shrieks of anger and pain...more screams...

The Ordinary Life of Tom Nobody
[participant in the 2018 NaNoWriMo Royal Road challenge] The Ordinary Life of Tom Nobody is a LitRPG system story where each person transitions into the system, or SCHEMA as this system is known, innocent and unaware of his former life. Following the tutorial, memories return, but by this point, each person has a better chance of accepting their new world. It also gives them an opportunity to start from scratch, fresh without all the baggage of their former lives dictating their decisions in the early stages of the process. I don’t expect this will necessarily turn into an action-packed heroic tale, my intent is to create a character who wants to have just an ordinary, but reasonably comfortable life. I don’t know myself how well he will succeed, there may be twists and Tom may discover some heroism hidden deep inside. I guess we’ll find out together. This is my first writing attempt. I’ve wanted to write all my life, but I’ve never been able to develop the proper discipline to put in the work. I hope I complete the challenge and work my way past this hump. I am writing this as part of the NaNoWriMo Royal Road Challenge. While I will try to self-edit as I go, the challenge requires close to 2,000 words a day, so parts of the story may be rough, and things like plot lines may not make as much sense as any of us would like. If all goes well, and I complete the challenge, I plan on going back through everything and trying to polish it up. In the meanwhile, thank you for reading and I hope I don’t disappoint.
