《Battlefield NYC (LitRPG Apocalypse)》Chapter 25: Resurface

As soon as Lance entered the street outside that building, he felt it: it was everywhere; it was in every direction, it wasn't hiding itself anymore but instead appeared before everyone's eyes in its entirety, ready for anyone who dared approach it to have a taste of what it had been capable of doing during the last few weeks. He almost stumbled backwards right into Sophie as she grabbed his arm with a concerned look on her face, holding him back from running away in fear.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"I can feel it," he said. "The System, and maybe the person who got us out of that hellscape.”
"I think I feel it too," Sophie replied. "Not as much as you though, clearly."
Jacob looked at them like they were crazy—but Grace just nodded at him without saying anything. Had she felt it too?. There were no traces of blood on the ground around them now either—or at least none that they could see from here. The four of them continued forward slowly, scanning the surroundings for any signs of movement or potential danger, and then they made it across the street and stopped there, looking around for something that would indicate where this mysterious power came from and how to get to safety again.
"Are there monsters nearby?" Grace asked. Always the cautious one.
"Yeah," Lance said, expanding his [Presence Detection] outwards. "There's a group of five creatures in front of us in the middle of the street with some sort of shield in place. "
He tried using his [Assess] skill and was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to work through his Special Ability.
What was less pleasant, though, was what his ability told him.
"They're level eight or nine and don't seem to be doing much other than standing in a line together. What's interesting is that my Assess skill says they are all human-shaped like us, but my Presence Detection tells me that they've been transformed somehow into the monsters we've seen before."

"That doesn't make any sense," Grace said as she took another step forward—not towards the monsters in the road—but away from them instead: she'd spotted something behind them that drew her attention. "Theory: your Presence Detection can detect internal modifications, too? Maybe you're detecting humans who have been fucked up too?"
Lance nodded. "Yeah, I'm guessing you're right about that too."
Jacob just frowned at them, looking like he wanted to ask for clarification on how they were so sure of themselves, but didn't want to interrupt what looked like an important discussion going on between his companions. Sophie stepped closer to him, probably because of his silence. She leaned against his chest with a look of relief on her face while Grace continued walking toward the five people Lance had described earlier and Sophie started describing what they could see from this angle, pointing to different things and making comments along the way.
They carefully avoided the monsters that Lance had detected. [Presence Detection] was awfully useful, allowing them to navigate while encountering minimal resistance.
"We need to get out of this city," Jacob said. "Surely the System can't have turned the whole world into monsters."

No More Respawns
Synopsis: The first time Allen died, he was forced back into a living hell where death is temporary, and power is all that matters. With evil and depravity as the rule, tragedy becomes comedy and life becomes an act. Only a deal with a shady god can get him back to his old life, but what happens if there’s nothing left to save? Maybe hell isn’t so bad if you have infinite lives… until you don’t. Needless to say, it’s all fun and games until there’s no more respawns. Foreword: This story is meant primarily as an action adventure and secondarily as a dark and nihilistic comedy. It may not be readily apparent in the beginning, but that's what I have planned (I feel the need to emphasize the dark; don’t rage at me if it gets too ‘traumatizing’ or something). I’m going to take my time with this, so it won’t immediately inundate you with doom and gloom. This is also a comedy, remember? On that note, if for some cursed reason you just can't handle either the references or the jokes, I am willing to battle in the comments. Anyway, I still put a significant amount of effort into the system, so I hope you enjoy that part. It is a little bulky, I'll admit to that, but I wanted to try something new and its more fun when there's more depth to it. Regardless, I still have a lot of fun doing math in the middle of writing a fictional story (/s). I also want to see if I can keep from messing up the pacing. Many times, I end up going too fast because I'm afraid of the story getting boring, which tends to ironically have the opposite effect. I'm still learning I suppose; we'll see how things go. Lastly, please leave reviews and comments, they really mean a lot to me and (usually) help me improve considerably. I'll be asking for feedback in the polls and I do still check the old ones from time to time. Notes: The story takes a bit of time to develop; give it time if you're here for drama, grimdark, or antihero. The system is all blue boxes and I'm not half-assing the numbers. Chapters will be between 1k and 2k words usually. I always use the oxford coma, fight me. Might drop if rating falls below 4 stars, idk. It depends on how my life is going. Cover drawn by yours truly in MS paint. (I have skill, I know)

It is not an alliance anyone expects to last long. To save the Empire from another tiresome civil war, Sir Brand, the Duke of Orston, Dragon Slayer, all round hero and terrible poet, travels to the far away city of Sealmu Alu in an attempt to find his father, the infamous Butcher of Bergraz and persuade him to return home from his self imposed exile and take the throne. As the Empire lurches from crisis to crisis like a drunk on a ice covered road, Lady Anna, aristocratic heir to one of the noblest houses in the Empire and her companion, the eccentric Earth born Lady Kate acquire evidence that suggest the young Emperor's death may not have been the tragic accident it appeared to be. Meanwhile the two people many regard as responsible for the whole recent crisis have disappeared without trace. The beautiful Druid Healer Natalie, the only person who can open the ancient alien Gateways to Earth and her Earth born lover, Xavier are on a quest to destroy the evil Iron Brotherhood, their quest taking them to strange places of legend, Flor Ida, Amarillo and beyond.
