《Battlefield NYC (LitRPG Apocalypse)》Chapter 14: Skill Enhancing

Sophie didn't say anything. Instead she turned around and crawled closer to Lance so that they could be close to each other while also keeping an eye on the exit. There were no windows here either: not that it would matter much if one of those men came back to check up on them again or if someone else tried to come inside to hurt them, but he was worried about getting stuck in this building with nothing outside for miles. He wanted to know what was happening if he heard something. If he saw people coming towards him. What was safe?

Besides, this building was weird. It had far more floors than it had earlier, and the layout was nothing like he'd remembered. Had the advent of the System done it?

Speaking of which, what was with that? The text that had appeared in front of everyone's eyes, granting them superhuman abilities--he'd been too busy not dying to think about it, but how the hell was it working? What metrics did it run off of?

He'd have to ask Sophie later—maybe she knew more about this whole situation than he did right now. For now though, Lance focused his attention back onto the door. Lance thought to himself,

***

Lance got to work before long: there was still plenty to be done while Sophie slept on the floor. They both needed rest; they weren't invincible after all. Some of the bodies on the floor were armed, and he made sure to collect as many guns from them as he could carry, ensuring that he had ammunition for them. He'd noticed [Mind Attack] had run into issues earlier. Lance couldn't solely rely on his Special Abilities, he knew that much. If things ever turned bad again like they had in this room tonight, he wouldn't know what to do. He'd only been able to use one of those abilities at once and even then, it hadn't worked quite right—he wasn't used to using them yet. That might change soon if these two or three hours gave him time to think about anything other than surviving though.

Lance closed his eyes, drawing on his status.

He can use this skill to spy on people without them knowing. [Mind Attack]: Lance can strike directly at another’s mind using his P stat.

Lance had a lot of unspent points. His stats seemed pretty strong all around, so he held off on adding to those for now. As for his skills, however...

While Lance wasn't sure how much his skill points were worth exactly, he figured he should take them and throw them into whatever skill might help them most out here in this city of insanity and death: Mind Attack.

He focused, trying to put some points in Perception. That was what Mind Attack was based off, right? If it worked like that, then maybe there would be no harm putting a few more points into Perception than he already had—Mind Attack was one of the few ways he had to fight back.

After a little bit of thought, he decided to go ahead and try adding a point.

[Skill point expended! Perception increased!]

[Skill point expended! Perception increased!]

Then he added one each to Stealth and Speed, saving the rest.

Lance closed the menu again and looked at his character sheet once more before checking the status screen just to make sure nothing else happened. He'd never gotten an increase in his stats like this before, so he wasn't quite sure if this change would stick or not. The fact that these changes did indeed seem to have been permanent gave him some reassurance though, so he wasn't worried too much about it. Besides, with more Skill Points and Status Points left after all this, there wasn't much reason to worry right now anyway.

Lance thought to himself as he put away the guns and ammo. he decided, satisfied that his Special Abilities were doing what he wanted them to do: help him survive—and hopefully save Sophie too.
