《Battlefield NYC (LitRPG Apocalypse)》Chapter 13: Unexpected Saviors

Sophie's leg was bleeding, and while it wasn't lethal yet it would be if given time to fester. Lance didn't have a first aid kit on him, but this room, a wreck of what had once been a police meeting room, just might. Thank God, there was an emergency box by the door—a metal case filled with everything from water bottles to blankets in case anyone ever got stuck outside overnight. Same place it was for the meeting room he'd been in less than twelve hours, though that one had been a lot higher than this.

It wasn't locked, but it took a little effort to open. Lance grunted with effort to pry its lid off, and when the lid popped open, there were bandages inside. Perfect.

Lance started wrapping up Sophie's wound. He made sure the cloth was tight enough that he knew she wouldn't bleed out over the next few hours like he'd seen some people do.

As soon as he finished that task and closed off her wounds as best he could with the bandage, Lance went over to look at the corpses lying on the floor next to her.

Amidst his exhaustion, Lance found himself laughing softly to himself for a second. That wasn't a thought he'd ever expected to come out of him after what had happened tonight: killing people wasn't supposed to be funny, even if they had been trying to kill you first or just generally making your life more difficult than it should have been by existing. Killing people was a bad thing, an evil thing, a necessary evil for most situations.

he told himself.

It was then that he sensed the new presences. Two of them.

The same two policemen he'd seen earlier walked into the room without a care in the world, their clothes freshly bloodstained and their faces smiling. They looked like they were enjoying this—like they had really expected to die themselves tonight and now that they were here and still alive, they seemed determined to enjoy every minute of it as much as possible. One of the men grabbed the gun from the floor where it had fallen and tossed it aside before stepping over to Sophie's body The other policeman went to check on Lance as well, moving towards him with his arms outstretched to grab him and pull him close for a hug so they could both bask in their survival for a few moments longer.

They weren't going to hurt Lance or do anything bad to him. These two men wanted to congratulate them on surviving, and nothing more than that.

These guys had gone insane too, it seemed, though they were far less aggressive than the others. Fortunate, that they weren't murderous, but were Lance and Sophie really the only sane people left?

"We're wandering the area and killing criminals," one of them explained, a huge smile plastered on his face. "You're police, so you're fine."

"Are—are we safe?" Sophie asked, looking up at the man like he was a god come down from Heaven.

"Safe enough if you stay here!" The policeman who'd just been checking on Sophie reached into his pocket and pulled out a pistol with his other hand. "Just keep this on you; don't take chances out there, alright?" He passed her the weapon before turning back to look at his companion. "Come on—let's go see what else is still out there for us to kill."

The two policemen stepped over to leave without another word, their feet clomping loudly across the floor as they moved through the door. Their voices faded away soon after that, leaving Lance and Sophie alone in the room together once more.
