《Lune Levant》Chapter 26

Dreadlilocks saw the Odsplut in a dream.
She flinched under the glare of its fixed smile, the only thing left to be seen in the darkness.
She found herself hating it, just a little bit. “Why are you smiling??” she demanded, though her mouth would not move. “You hurt everyone. My friends and family are all gone. There’s nothing to be happy about!”
“WE ARE HAPPY TO DO OUR LADY’S WILL,” it replied. “THERE IS INFINITE JOY IN THIS. JOIN US; LET GO THE ILLUSION OF FREE WILL, AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND.”
“But it can’t end this way! Mère L’Oye wouldn’t write a story like this! It’s horrible…nothing we did even mattered…”
“THAT DEPENDS ON YOUR PERSPECTIVE…WE BELIEVE YOU AND YOUR SUPPORTING CHARACTERS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED A LOT, INTERPERSONALLY SPEAKING. PERHAPS WHAT REALLY MATTERED WAS THE FRIENDS YOU MADE ALONG THE WAY—”
“No! No, no, no!! That’s not all we wanted; it’s not enough!! Everyone else in LaConte; the Captain of the Guard, the seven stone giants, the people in the village, even Mr. Azor’s roses…they’re all counting on us! Maybe we did become good friends on the way, but we still came together to save them, and we…have to!!”
“WELL, YOU CAN’T.”
“That’s just what you say!”
“AND WHO WILL SAY ANY DIFFERENT? YOU??”
“…Yes. Me…”
~~
Dreadlilocks awakened face down in the dust.
Dazed and bewildered, she slowly picked herself up and looked around. The landscape was barren and gray, in stark contrast to the pitch black sky.
“The…moon,” she breathed.
She stood up and began to walk. She had no idea where she was going, or even where she might expect to end up. But it was all she could think of to do.
In the back of her mind, she wondered why she was still alive. Then she thought that, if she had made it to the moon, then it was possible that her friends had made it, too.

But thinking about that made her heart hurt, because it was equally possible that they were gone forever and she was all alone. So she decided to just keep walking, and to try not to think about anything.
After she had left a trail of footsteps about a mile long, she came to a large crater. She sat down at its edge and sighed.
“…Maybe this isn’t really the moon,” she thought. “Maybe this is just what it’s like to be dead, and each of the others are in an empty place just like this…”
“…I guess Mr. Azor would probably like it, though. He’d say, ‘finally, some peace and quiet…and no PEOPLE…!’”
She smiled, but only for a second. But then that reminded her of the way Uriel used to smile so briefly, as if he were afraid to show his teeth for too long.
Her heart began to hurt again, but she thought it wouldn’t be fair to remember only half of her friends and not the others. So she thought about Lucy, who would probably be trying to build sandcastles out of the moon dust, even though there wasn’t any water to thicken it with. Then she thought about Pitch, who, if she could see her now, would probably tell her to come away from the edge of the crater so she wouldn’t risk falling in, while gently brushing the tears from her eyes.
Instead, Dreadlilocks brushed them away herself. She couldn’t remember ever crying like this before, not even on the day she realized her mother and father weren’t coming home.
She decided, then, that the tears were long overdue.

Except, when a mugger accosts Cadence and her boyfriend attempts to wrestle a gun away from the criminal, Cadence ends up shot. A normal girl, with the kind of wound Cadence had, would die. Cadence managed to do that part. But a normal girl wouldn't then open her eyes again and learn that death is not as permanant for her as it is for other people. She can be reborn again, and again. Thomas the Brawler
Thomas doesn't remember what his last name was, before it became Bluebrim, a name belonging to another universe. He's also pretty sure he wasn't this stupid before he arrived, but what can you do, when a day that was supposed to begin with an interview to set your life back on track instead begins in a universe that makes no sense, with rules you can't begin to understand? Maybe he should have paid more attention to the avatar creation screen ... Content warnings: All of them. Seriously. Expect lots of blue screens to begin with. Don't expect a power-leveling fantasy, in which the lone hero beats up all the bad guys, and gets a harem of women. There's just a guy who treats character creation like an annoying series of pop-up advertisements, and the story is basically the ramifications of that. The main character has to learn to take the world he's found himself in seriously, and he'll learn the way most of us do, by doing it wrong first. This is, insofar as it is successful, a dark comedy fantasy. Also a bit of horror, particularly but not exclusively body horror. I'm pretty sure I've earned those Content Warning tags, so, uh, yeah. This is practice. Hopefully things improve as I go, and figure out what I'm doing wrong, but I make no guarantees things will ever get better. I've already made mistakes, I'll make more, and I'm happy to notice them each time I make them. You don't improve unless you fail. (On the plus side, it probably won't get much worse.) Feel free to point out anything you think I'm doing wrong; I don't promise to change anything, particularly if it's a matter of taste, but I am looking to improve, and figuring out what I need to improve goes faster if I don't have to try to figure it out myself. I've updated the earlier chapters for formatting, in the hope that it would make everything easier to read on mobile devices. Hopefully things work slightly better now, but please let me know if there are any issues anywhere.

Death Galaxy
When portals opened across the world and space, people were a bit terrified. Naturally, some people called it the end times or some other negative interpretation. Thankfully, the new arrivals managed to calm the masses, saying they were here from across dimensions in search of peaceful refuge. After some discussion and promise from the reality hopers to not break the world, they were allowed asylum. And so, began a technological revolution as the new cohabitants, who looked distinctly human if a bit off, openly shared some of their knowledge with us. Space travel, while not cakewalks, become more easily accessible, as did interplanetary colonization. Naturally, with the New Humans keeping some of the more dangerous techs to themselves and Old Humans being a greedy bunch, tensions are arising as old and new grudges rear their ugly heads. The world endlessly spins as history, both good and bad, is seemingly on its way to repeating itself. Only with other planets, and potentially other universes, being the backdrop this time. But that was big stuff that Alex had no real interest in. They only care about one thing and one thing. TDAG. Trans-Dimensional Adventure Games. Best VR system ever made. Alex, instead of focusing on political and multiverse shenanigans, had their eyes set on VR games. Specifically, one of the new and up and coming potential best games of all times. Death Galaxy
