《Exceptional Normalcy (A Pokemon Fanfiction)》CH9 - How To Succeed And Fail At The Same Time

I had to say that the last task was a bit of a disappointment. A few minutes after everyone was here, each of us got a Pokeball. The teacher then explained what we had to do. It was quite simple, really, you just had to befriend the pokemon you had in your hand. Each of us was then placed in a wide berth from one another. We got 20 minutes to complete the task and with the shout of the teacher the test began.
I quickly activated the mechanism of the ball and released the content. It turned out that almost everyone got a Bidoof as a partner. Some also got a Starly and one or two even a Budew, lucky shits they were. I once again returned my attention back to my generic Bidoof, which was lazily snoozing on the floor. //Deep breathes Ryan. You can do this.// Task one was to wake the Bidoof up without upsetting it and the only way I knew of was...to tickle it until it drops back on the ground. As such dark thoughts were coursing through my mind, I noticed that my pokemon was waking up with a startled glint in its eyes. I quickly turned off my evil intentions and switched to positive and happy ones. I gave the pokemon a caring smile and held a hand out.
"Hello buddy, do wanna be friends?" It seemed to only take notice of me when I began to talk as it was still busy with looking for the evil incarnate. I swiftly switched my tactics. "You know, if you become friends with me I promise I will protect you from whatever is scaring you, ok?" That got the Bidoofs attention and it quickly agreed to my suggestion. //Am I evil?// When the examiners arrived at my spot, they could only see a young be happily playing with an equally cheerful Bidooof. They didn't need to know that we were only acting the part. 10 minutes after the last person was examined, they told us to return the pokemon to the balls. We then had to return the Pokeballs and were asked to wait in the entrance hall of the school.

I sat there for what felt like an hour, for something to change. All of us were surprised when they gave each of us a number, which ranged from 1 to 10. When someone asked what the number stood for, he was told that it represented his results. 1 stood for 'a job well done' and 10 meant 'try again next time'. When I looked back on my number which had a 2,5 on it I couldn't help myself and began to cackle loudly.
I soon found out what that meant for me. They hung up a sheet of paper that stated the following:
7-10: Stays in their grade.
4-6: Moves up one grade.
1-3: Can move up two grades.
I couldn't believe it I had just literally caught up to the people my age. I couldn't be any happier. All the students were dismissed be the teachers.
I was in my way back to the orphanage to tell Marcia of the great news. That was until I could hear shouting from a sidewalk I was passing.
"What do you mean you couldn't get any?"
"No can do. There were no more pokemon worth taking. The city is too low tier for any good findings."
"Argh! Understood, then let us get out of here. We need to return to base in order to report our progress."
I quickly left the sidewalk behind and tried to understand what they were talking about. "Not getting any? Maybe stealing them. Too weak to be stolen. Report to the base? Base, base, base, a Hideout! And reporting would mean they have a structured organisation and superiors that they receive orders from. Could it be...be...be....G? Argh! I almost had it! I felt it on the tip of my tongue."

I was frustrated with myself. I just was about to find out something and almost had it! And in the next moment, it was gone! Like someone deleted it. Seems that the perpetrator who did this to me was not yet finished with me. With my mood on a darker tone, I returned home only to be greeted be the strict face of Granny Marcia. When she saw my face she seemed to have misread my emotions and told that there was always a next time. I quickly corrected her assumptions and told her the great news. She had a look of surprise written all over her face but swiftly hid it behind her impassive mask of sternness. She was now congratulating me on my great success and told me to keep up the good work.
When she has left me to my own devices, I briskly went and accessed one of the Pcs of the house. With the use of a search engine, I looked for the following criteria: Evil organisation, Beginning with the letter G and Sinnoh. I was quickly led to a report that stated the doings of the infamous team Galactic and how they were disbanded 5 years ago. That concludes that whoever that was in the sidewalk, wasn't from team Galactic. "But why was I thinking that they were at fault and how come that I had a memory of them.", I whispered to myself.

Force Majeure: A web novel
In the Qursan Empire, the grey walls of the city press down on its subjects. It is a highly divided society which is based on the magical strength of its citizens. While the most powerful are trained as Mages, the majority of citizens use their limited skills with essence to power the city in their assigned jobs. Jano is pretty much the lowest of the low in the Qursan Empire. A Class Ten citizen forced into transitory work after having his power restricted. When he gets the opportunity to change all of that, he takes it with both hands. Please note this is an edited version of my story ‘city of captives’. It follows a similar structure but I’ve ironed out some of the kinks. If you read that version, much of this will be similar though there are some differences. This is a slow burning progression fantasy. Please expect at least two chapters per week. I love writing this story but I do have unfortunate things to deal with like work and life outside of writing. I may be able to write and edit more than that, but it will never be less! If you enjoy this, consider following me on Instagram by just searching Crow J Williams.
