《My RPG System》Chapter 28: Siege

As the beasts got closer and closer, the pressure we all felt got bigger and bigger. For majority of us, this would be our first siege we have experienced, as the last one was years ago, when many here were still children. We watched with mixed feelings as the beasts charged forward with unrelenting desire for destruction. Their roars and charge shaking the land in front. As the last of the light disappeared for the day, we were engulfed in darkness. A second later, light balls illuminated the darkness, floating up into the sky. Dozens of mages cast light to help us see. Time passed and the beats surged forward. 2 miles out, then 1 mile, then half a mile. Once they were at about several hundred feet out, we got the word.
Van Hugh: "Ranged fighters, attack with all you got! earth element users, build a wall or try to trip them up and sow them down. The rest, kill them all!"
I also vaguely felt the same chaos energy fro the dungeon, coming from the beats. However, it was very weak and i barely noticed it. None the less, it was still there which still concerned me. Hundreds of battle cries rang out followed by spells. All sorts of spells flew through the air, towards the monster hoard. Loud booms rang out kicking up earth and dust. Monster limbs flew as some exploded on the spot. Dozens of beast were killed while close to another 100 were injured letting out roars of pain. Christy and I were not idle either, we joined the attack as well. She cast a light element bow and started shooting light arrows at the beasts, each one striking one with precision in their heads, killing them on the spot. I started off by creating a fire domain around me and boosting attack power by 10% for everyone within 20 feet of me. I then used up half of my mana to form a darkness mana bomb and launched it at the hoard. With the amount of mana spent, the bomb covered an area of 80 square feet. With a boom, close to 60 beasts were killed. I heard all the kill notification ring in my head. I ignored them. It was experience grinding time.

Only 30 seconds or so had passed and yet, close to several hundred beasts were already dead. However, they were also within 100 feet of the gate. So, the guild master ordered the melee fighters to engage. They charged out toward the beats with the same ferocity as the hoard. Nearly 100 fighters engaged them close up. The spells hadn't let up though, but were aimed more carefully. The fighters tried to block as many as possible, not wanting them to get close, but with the still overwhelming number of them, plenty still got through and continued to charge. That was fine with me. I cast Gatling gun. Some of the beasts that got through the melee fighters were killed by other ranged attackers. For the ones that didn't, my Gatling took care of them. A minute later, the strategy was still going well, but I didn't want to take any chances so I cast a second one, then drank a couple mana potions. After 30 more seconds, I was glad I did because the melee fighters were starting to get overwhelmed. Some of the lower ranked one's were either killed, or running low on energy and were injured.
The second gun was able to keep up with the increasing number of beasts closing in on the gate for half a minute before the first gun disappeared. When that happened, I cast bullet and fused lightning into them to hit as many as possible to stun and mobilize them for a second to allow a bit more time for the other ranged attackers to kill them. This worked for some time as the others were able to kill them immediately after they were paralyzed. I took a glance to see how the melee fighters were doing, and boy, they were not looking so hot. More and more got injured or killed, or had very little energy to continue. I had to do something, so I used the majority of mana and formed another mana bomb. I used a couple more mana potions to make one that would cover 100 square feet. I threw it into a crowd of beats that were charging towards the melee people, carefully aiming so that it would not affect them. BOOM! The bomb exploded and another couple hundred beast were either dead or severely hurt. This as well as several greatly timed earth walls, allowed them to retreat too the city wall. I picked off the few monsters who were trying to attack them as they did so. someone cast a mud area of effect spell that slowed the beast down severely when the stepped into it. This, as well as dozens of other support skills, allowed the melee fighters to recover their strength. Then they got back into the fight.

The fight continued for another 30 minutes. By then, the beast numbers had been reduced to only a hundred or so. However, the still charged ahead fearlessly but pointlessly. They were quickly eliminated. Silence covered the battlefield and the wall, before someone yelled that we won. Immediately, hundreds of screams of joy and relief sounded out from the wall and gate. A few minutes later, the guild master flew back up and faced us all once again.
Van Hugh: "Thanks to you all, we have managed to overcome these beasts. You all showed great courage and power. I hope that in the future, everyone continue to grow stronger so you can protect this city even better. However, yes we managed to be victorious tonight, but not without losses. Dozens of our fellow companions have sadly perished. they will be remembered for what they did today. they will all be given warrior burials, and the guild will compensate their families and honor them for their loved ones sacrifice. With our victory, their lives were not lost in vain. Tonight, go home to your families. Celebrate, for tomorrow we mourn the loss of brave warriors."
With that, he took one last look at everyone and vanished on the spot. I looked at Christy beside me. She looked tired but she had a smile on her face. She got closer and wrapped her arms around my body. I returned her hug, and brought her to my chest. as we stood there in each others arms, the small army we had started to break up and head back to their homes. Some were crying, while others had looks of joy or exhaustion. For just a second, I doubted that this was the life I wanted, but just for a second. Feeling the beautiful woman in my arms, I knew I would do anything to keep her happy and safe, even face a 10,000 beast hoard alone.
Just as we got lost in each other's arms, we heard someone behind us give a light cough in our direction. I jumped a bit. With my mind, I could sense others presence from a pretty good distance, but this guy, I wasn't able tell he was there until he coughed. I immediately turned around, the two of us separating quickly right before I did. What I saw, nearly made my heart leap from my chest. Christy's face went red and she tilted her head down embarrassed. It was Guild master Van Hugh, Christy's father. Fuck!
Van Hugh: "HA-HA! You don't need to be so nervous my boy. I actually approve of the two of you. I quite like you. However, I warn you not to break my little girl's heart or I will show you one of my many methods of torture. Anyway, besides this, I am here to say two things . First, you two performed well in this fight. Both of you handled yourselves well. Secondly, Aug, did you notice the strange energy coming from the beasts?"
Me: "Yeah. It was chaos. I barely felt it, as it was so weak, but I could still feel and recognize it."
Van Hugh: "As I thought. That was chaos. the situation is as I feared. the beasts outside have also been infected. Now the question remains is how far has it spread. I will inform the king about it and let you know what he says later. For now, the two of you head back and.....enjoy yourselves. Good night."
With that he vanished again, and I stood there stunned. What did he mean enjoy yourselves? He said it in such a weird way. Wait, don't tell me, he didn't mind the I...did....that...with his.... i couldn't finish my thought. Blood threatened to erupt again from my nose. Just then as that ridiculous thought went through my head, Christy squeezed my hand. I looked over and she had a mischievous grin on her face.
Christy: "So, handsome. Shall we go back and.....enjoy......ourselves?"
