《Ninth World Lia's Struggle》ch 69

First of all I feel the need to clarify a few things. For starters, Sophy is an A ranked adventurer. She had just been appointed so before traveling to the academy so her strength is more comparable to the upper B rankers or lower A rankers. Tiff on the other hand isn’t an adventurer but the daughter of a knights family. However, if I had to guess her strength she is on par if not a little better than Sophy. As for me, I believe there is no need to say much. I am a C ranked adventurer with strength that far surpases said rank.
Because of this we decided to place some restrictions on ourselves to make things interesting. After all, inside this forest the highest ranked threat we could find is C rank. Meaning a party of C rankers or a solo B ranker could deal with it. The restrictions we placed are as follows.
Sophy isn’t allowed to use high or middle grade magic. Not that she could easily use high grade magic anyway. In simple words, middle grade magic is magic capable of either leveling an area of at least ten meters in radius or piercing middle grade defense. Following that logic, High grade magic is magic that can destroy areas of no less than a hundred meters radius or piercing high grade defense.
I learned all this in the magic theory class but that's not all, apart from the low, middle and high there are other subdivisions but I won't bother explaining those right now. Anyway, Tiff’s restriction is that she can use magic just or her soul ability, just like me. Of course, if our lives are in danger we can just ignore the restrictions. It's not like we are physically, mentaly or magically appearing our abilities.
“So as planned, I will start with magic then Amelia attacks from behind and Tiffany finish it off”
“Okay let's go!”
Right now we are hiding in a bush looking at a wolf monster known as a vine wolf. In reality it is not a wolf per say. It is a monster made of plants making it far more troublesome than a normal monster world due to its absurde vitality. The easiest way to kill it would be to burn it but the loot would be burnt too. Because of this we went with the option that would leave us with the most loot, freezing it.
Sophy could freeze it with a single middle grade spell but due to the restrictions she had to use weaker spells. With that amount of power the monster wouldn’t be frozen in one or two shots. So my and Tiff’s job was to distract it while Sophy bombarded it until it froze.

The battle began with Sophy’s frost spell. To put it simply it is a gust of sub-zero wind. It’s name comes from the fact that it would cause frost to appear on the surfaces it touched. That is exactly what happened as the spell landed on the vine wolf. With a roar it began running towards Sophy’s hiding spot but before it could do anything else I attacked.
Holding Naru and pyrka I dashed forward aiming to cut its limbs only to be stopped by its tentacle like vines. Of course I cut through them with ease but this bought the monster enough time to prevent an injury to its main body. In an instant, it changed targets and attacked me.
In the next instant the vine wolf jumped to the side in an attempt to defend its head. Tiff’s Sharp Claymore managed to cut half of it’s neck. If the monster hadn’t tried to dodge the attack it would be headless right now. However, that would be far from a lethal injury. As a plant monster, it did not have a brain. So even if we cut it’s head it could still move just as well.
The reason why it defended its head is because of the sensory organs that work as eyes on it. Either way before the vine wolf could aim for a counterattack the second wave of frost washed over it. Once again it tried to run towards its main threat which was Sophy with her spells.
However, that was no more than a futile attempt. There is no way either me or Tiff would let it reach there and even if by a miracle it managed to reach her Sophy is still an A ranked adventurer. She may be a mage but in her own worlds, all mages must learn some close quarters combat if they want to become high ranked adventurers.
It was more than clear that the spells were doing their job as the wolf’s movements became slower. After another two rounds of attacks the thing had finally stopped moving due to its low temperature. If we left it here it would wake up after it warmed up but why would we do that?
What is worth of the vine wolf is a special sap that is stored in the middle of its body. It can be used for medicine but some rich people with extravagant tastes like to use it for making wine. I heard from Tiff that here is a rumor about it tasting like the sweetest grapes you will ever have.
After gathering it we kept on hunting. Most of the fights were the same as with the vine wolf since almost all the monsters we encountered were plant type go figures. Thankfully we hadn’t encountered those disgusting tenvipe.

“It has been going quite well and we have gotten a lot of loot too”
“yea, maybe a little too much, if we continue like this our bags will become too full to carry any more, not to mention heavy”
“Well, it’s better to have an excess than a lack of”
As we considered if we should continue or head back I felt a slimy sensation on my ankle and a foreboding feeling. I slowly turned around and froze for a second. Tiff and Sophy noticed before they looked in the same direction. As they did they also froze and before glancing at me with a worried expression.
I felt the slimy thing grip and pull trying to drag me towards it. I finally snapped out of it before gathering as much mana as I could muster. That’s right, A tenvipe was currently grabbing my ankle with its disgusting tentacle.
The air in our surroundings began to waver as I released my aura at full force. In my hand the modified construct for a fireball was being pumped with ten times more mana than a normal fireball would need.
“You disgusting thing. Burn in hell!”
With that shout I finished the magical construct as well as the fueling. A fireball the size of a car shot towards the tenvipe while breaking the sound barrier. My eyes had changed for the second time today.
In an instant the fireball if it could still be called that landed on my target that was less than ten meters away from us. It was then that I realized I had gone overboard. The spell exploded with a blast of heat. If it is to be compared to the explosion caused by my spark spell then it is at the very least ten times stronger, maybe twenty.
Thankfully, Sophy and Tiff reacted quickly raising ice and earth shields in front of them. I on the other hand didn’t know any such spells so all I could do was use my mana barrier. The scorching heat wasn’t stopped by the mana barrier and the blast sent me flying around fifty meters away.
My charred skin began crumbling off of me as a new one took its place. My clothes were no better but at least this time I had the gear I made myself so it was regenerating alongside me. If I had come with my school uniform I would be naked right now.
Looking towards where I had been I could see the forest burning. Soon after I saw Tiff and Sophy running out of the burning forest. Thankfully they were alright, with some soot on their faces and clothes but alright.
“Amelia! What was that! Moreover, are you alright?”
“Yea I am fine, sorry”
“To be expected of the exploding girl”
Yea, that was a nickname I had earned after the first applied magic class but that didn’t mean I liked it. That is why I gave Tiff a reprimanding stare. However, that didn’t last long before we began laughing. After a while Sophy and Tiff suddenly stopped wide eyed looking behind me. Then I felt a familiar slimy feeling on my shoulder.
Tiff and Sophy were quicker this time to use their magic walls. This tenvipe was a different one from the first one, but my reaction was the exact same. Sorry, I am lying. This time I used twice as much power.
After my rampage we decided it was enough for today. The two looked absolutely exhausted after the second blast. I guess resisting it had taken its toll on them. Anyway, I didn’t feel like staying in the forest any longer either so we went back to the academy.
“Fuah, taking a bath after all that is so refreshing”
“Agreed, relaxing one’s body after exercising is the best”
The two girls sounded like old men as they dipped into the warm bath. I did the same of course. We had to clean all the soot and sweat caused by my spells. What about the wildfire I had started? What about it? We just left it as is. Could I have used some water spell to extinguish it? Maybe but I didn’t feel like it. If more of those fuckers died due to the fire then I would be happier.
“All in all it was fun”
“Yeah, it was”
“Let’s do it again next week”
“Wait Tiff at least lest chose another hunting ground or Amelia may end up burning the entire forest down”
“True, next time we will choose where we are going”
I could help but sigh before a slight chuckle escaped me. It seems like we will be going hunting next week as well. Well, at least Naru and Pyrka will be happy with that.

Sara's (not really) Fabulous System Armageddon, Book I: The World Ended at Rush Hour
Planet Earth, Monday, October 7th, 2019. 18:30 * * On a fateful day, during rush hour in eastern North America, Heavens and Hell crumbled and fell from their higher dimension on Earth. It came from "above" but not the same above we regard in our tridimensional Euclidean reasoning. No, it came from "above" as in from a higher dimension. Bits and pieces of those places fell on Earth from all directions, this time in tridimensional Euclidean space. Satellites, the ISS, and space debris all were wiped clean from orbit. Even those that didn't crash with the falling debris were knocked off orbit by the shockwaves. On the ground, power distribution lines were disrupted and most power facilities were left abandoned by their dead staff. Most of these had emergency shutdown routines that engaged in a few days. Some others had a survivor among their staff that followed protocol and activated their SCRAM switches, stopping the power plant. Long-distance communication disappeared the internet along with it. The world was plunged into technological darkness. Nine hundred and ninety-nine out of every thousand human beings perished immediately in the pulse of magical energy from the torn spatial boundary. Spirits were rent asunder and vanished, their fate neither salvation nor damnation, only oblivion. The criteria used for this culling was latent magic potential. It didn't discriminate against education, gender, age, or ethnic group. But of the around seven million survivors, most would meet their doom moments later. Those on moving vehicles, like the ones driving on highways suddenly had to contend with high-speed uncontrolled cars and trucks driven by corpses. Trapped in their vehicles and helpless, they became part of the long snake of crushed metal. Very few survived. Those in the air or out in the sea were alone and probably unable to control their rides. Airplanes crashed, and ships kept their course or drifted away, depending on their autopilot. Several ended their own lives in utter despair after seeing their loved ones die in front of them. Another large group would die at the hands of other survivors. Violence and aggression became the norm. Only a few sparse pockets of not-so-sane survivors managed to band together and cooperate for the sake of mutual survival. The sole survivor in a five-over-one apartment building in Georgia, a girl became the keystone to humanity's survival. Sara's fabulous System Apocalypse had just started. She has only one remark. It was anything but fabulous. * * Updates every Wednesday and Sunday.
