《Ninth World Lia's Struggle》ch 19

After waking up a similar process to the one the day prior took place. My eyes being bothered by the light alongside the stiffness and soreness of my body invading my senses. At least this time it took me less effort and time than before, even so, I still can't comprehend why would the lights need to be this bright. After managing to sit on the bed albeit with some difficulty I try to check on my body's condition. First I open and close my left hand which is still covered in bloody bandages, they could at least change them you know. It hurts a bit when I try and clench it with some force, as I can feel my bones, muscles, tendons and even nerves complaining about the task. Checking on my mana reserves I discover it's just as empty as the day before, concentrating for a while I can still feel my body greedily absorbing any and all mana in its surroundings. It seems like all the mana I am able to gather is instantly being used to boost my healing.
After a while of pondering I come to the conclusion that Oliver wasn't exaggerating. I still feel like a load of crap despite my body burning all the mana it can gather on healing. A sigh escapes from my lungs as I ponder how close I truly was to death. Well, that's not important right now, what is important is my rehabilitation. I wonder, does mana potions exist in this world? for starters, there is mana and magic so I would be surprised if there were. Moreover there exist healing magic so couldn't healing potions also exist? as I ponder about these things I come to the conclusion they don't or are extremely expensive. Even if healing magic does exist there is no guaranty that some alchemical concoction would instantly heal wounds with the same efficiency. Even if said efficiency were to be lower in comparison it's still hard to believe as a living body is a complex organism. I am no expert but I am sure healing magic must be hella hard to learn and use.
Going back to checking the state of my body I decided to check on my vocal cords. If I'm lucky maybe a whisper or two could be possible. With the utmost care, I open my mouth and push the smallest amount of air possible through my throat trying to oh so gently whisper the word hello. To my surprise and dismay, it was a success accompanied by the feeling of swallowing an angry bee nest. I began to cough uncontrollably until I felt the familiar hand gently patting my back while offering a glass of water.

"You don't learn, do you? well it doesn't matter, at least we now know you are not fit to talk just yet"
I feel like punching that smile of his off of that face but whatever, he right. Thinking about it I don't need to talk to communicate I can just write somewhere what I want to convey. Being proud of my great idea a new thought crossed my mind, how come I know how to read write and speak the language. It's almost impossible that people in this world speak the exact same English I know from Earth. Thinking back on it the most probable answer is they don't and now I don't either, Gaia most have replaced my knowledge of the English language with that of this worlds. It's a little scary to think that she could tamper with my mind like that, how knows if she did anything else up there.
After shaking off the shiver that ran through my spine I try to ask for paper and pen to write on by gesturing like I am writing something. Oliver gives me a confused look for a while before realizing what I am trying to convey. He leaves to get what I hope is what I asked for, after all, who knows if he got what I was trying to say. A minute or so after he left he came back with pen and paper handing it over to me with a cheap smile.
"I couldn't understand what you were trying to say but I got the idea you may know how to write to I thought maybe that way we could communicate, I am smart right?"
Taking the pen and paper the first thing I wrote was: idiot. He frowned a little which caused me to laugh a little, a grave mistake as I felt my abdomen sending bolt after bolt of pain. Have you ever done crunches? well imagine doing a hundred crunches non-stop and then laughing the next day after spending a whole year without doing any exercise, that's exactly how much it hurts right now.
"That's what you get for being rude. Either way, now that we can communicate let's ask a few questions to check on your body's condition. So, first, do you feel anything different compared to before?"
I ponder for a moment before writing on the paper.
"Apart from feeling sore all over, nothing much, except the light, why the hell are the lights so bright it hurts my eyes you know"
Reading the paper Oliver frowned again, there seems to be something wrong with my answer despite it being the most inconspicuous answer I could give or at least that's what I think.

"Amelia, the lights are set on the lowest setting. As a matter of fact, it's a little hard to read what you are writing in this low light"
Now it that is surprising, the lights are so bright on my eyes it still bothers me despite getting a little accustomed to it now. How the hell is this on the lowest setting! and how the hell can he say it's hard to read what I wrote in this low light! the paper is so bright it hurts a little to look at it!
"Amelia, this is just a hypothesis of mine, but perhaps your eyes mutated to adapt to the low light of the dungeon due to the miasma. If that is the case there might be other mutations we are unaware of"
Now that he mentions it I do remember being able to see in the dungeon with much ease by the end than I did at the beginning, well that if you consider it in terms of brightness and not blurriness. Thinking back on there might be other changes I may not be aware of! Closing my eyes I start to check again everything that I know about my body now, and what I knew about it before going back into the dungeon. My chest feels heavier! opening my eyes again and looking down at my breasts they are the same disappointing size as ever. What! a girl can dream, can't she? Oliver looks amused at my actions, at least he can't read my mind. With a sigh, I close my eyes again and try to concentrate once again. My body does feel weird, fundamentally different than before almost as if the very materials it's built off have changed while keeping the original shape. And my chest does indeed feel slightly heavier all jokes aside.
Telling all of this to Oliver he starts checking my body, but he can't seem to find anything of what I am talking about. However, he stops for a moment when he places his hands on my back. I can feel him sending mana into my body which absorbs it greedily. I can also feel how all the mana gets concentrated into a point where my heart is supposed to be before dispersing to the rest of the body. That's when I realize that point is where my chest feels weirdly heavy.
"Amelia... you are a human right?"
His voice is deeply ingrained with worry and a tinge of fear. I can't tell what has made him this worried and fearful but whatever it is it's inside of me.
"Yes I am, I am sure I am, why? what's wrong?"
He pulls his hands back from my back before answering with a careless tone. One I can tell he is forcing out.
"It's nothing, I am sure it's nothing, either way, you should go back to sleep"
As he finished he took the pen and paper somewhat forcefully from me. It worries that he is acting this way. Whatever he found inside of me is making him act this way. Could it be a tumour or something of the sort! After all, miasma causes mutations. Could I have developed a cancerous tumour right in the middle of my heart! how many days, nay, hours do I have left! Oliver! you should at the very list tell this young maiden how much time she has left! you twat!
Okay, I need to calm down. There is no use in worrying about things that aren't confirmed. It might be a tumour, yes, but it might not, and even if it is, it might not be a cancerous tumour. Either way, whatever it is, doesn't matter right now, there isn't anything I can do about it. It's not like I can just go to the kitchen, grab a knife and pull my heart out, dissect it, extract the tumour, and then put it back in, can I? no, no, push those stupid ideas away. I am not willing to do something so reckless just because there is something inside my heart that may or may not endanger my life.
I am drained, thinking about this and that is truly bothersome. I should just listen to Oliver and go back to sleep again, it's not like I have anything better to do anyway.
Elsewhere:
"Diana... are you a hundred percent sure Amelia is a human?"
The guild master who had received a sudden visit from Oliver received these words as soon as the two were left alone inside the guild's master office.
"What are you trying to imply, what did you find?"
Oliver looked agitated, whatever he had found was indeed important or dangerous for him to not only visit her personally but act in this way.
"I found a mass within Amelia's heart... it absorbs mana"
With those words, Diana was shocked senseless. There where only two explanations for something like this, and either spelt disaster for Amelia.
