《Ninth World Lia's Struggle》ch 9

As walked with heavy steps towards the inn I saw Dan and Lizz walking in the same direction so I decided to talk with them a little to get my mood up, it's not like I have anything better to do. As I was approaching a called them already feeling slightly refreshed. We waved our hands at each other as we got into speaking distance they seemed excited. I wonder if something good happened.
"This is a great coincidence, you see we were just about to go to your room to talk to you, but I was worried you would be out doing a quest or something, but we still wanted to give it a try, its not like we couldn't wait but we just wanted to tell you as soon as possible"
That last part was a little hard to understand as Lizz had fired all those words in a single breath. To tell the truth I kind of admire her lung capacity for being able to pull that off.
"Okay, calm down, deep breaths. Now tell me what has gotten you so worked up?"
I chuckled a little since I could clearly see her eyes shine with excitement. As she opened her mouth and was about to talk again Dan spoke first. It seems that he knew that if Lizz continued we would get nowhere.
"Lizz let me take it up from here. What she is so happy about is that we got permission from Dianna to enter the Masscuro dungeon. It's a somewhat known dungeon just four hours away from here. Normally adventurers our rank couldn't enter it unless they get a special permit, and that's precisely what we got more or less. You see Dianna agreed to give us the permit if we get another party member, and only for the first floor. So we decided to invite you since we have practised together and our team cooperation should be better than with some random person we barely know"
As he finished I was already nodding my head with the same excitement that Lizz had before. You see these two love talking about dungeons during our practices and they might or might not have influenced me a little too much into wanting to enter one.
"yes, hell yes I am going, but are you sure it's fine with me? I bet there are many others far more capable than me for this"
Lizz simply grabbed my shoulders while staring straight into my eyes. She narrowed her eyes a little implying she was inspecting me, somehow. She suddenly let go and with a smile began talking.
"Nope, there is no problem. You heard Dan we shouldn't be allowed in so anyone capable enough will either refuse or ask for payment. As for people our rank, no one is as strong as you. I mean some are but it's not like we have any sort of relation past being acquaintances and in some cases, not even that"

As she explained Dan kept nodding his head. So I am their first option after all. It's not like a would refuse if I was not but knowing they trust me this much is nice. Either way, there is a slight problem I have no weapon. I can't enter a dungeon unarmed, that would be suicidal, you only have one life after all, though that coming from me might not be convincing but still.
"Well, there is a slight problem. I broke my sword, again"
Without a second thought, both of them shrugged and gave me a look like asking what's the problem. In the past month, they had seen me break two out of the five swords I have gone through and were aware of another two that I told them about so, of course, they wouldn't be surprised there was a fifth one.
"The thing is. The last one was a steel sword and it just broke so my pockets are empty and I am weaponless"
With a toothy grin, Lizz placed her arm around my neck before nonchalantly telling me not to worry. I knew that grin too well and that don't worry was a massive flag for me. You see Lizz is extremely mischievous moreover she enjoys teasing me a little too much. Last time I accepted a favour from her I ended doing something embarrassing, too embarrassing. There is no way in hell I will fall for her tricks again. I am smart I learn from my mistakes. No, really, I do, I promise.
"Stop right there, I know what you are doing and the answer is no. I would much rather go in the dungeon with my bare fists than having to owe you.
She pouted slightly, Dan, on the other hand, couldn't stop laughing. He did not know what Lizz had put me through but the two were friends from a long time ago so he could have a good guess. Though I doubt he was close to the truth. Either way what I said is true I would rather go in there barehanded than owing Lizz.
"Come on it wasn't that bad. I mean you enjoyed it, I know you did"
As the words rolled out of her tongue with a seductive purr and a wink I felt a shiver run down my spine. Never again, ever. And just for the record, it wasn't anything sexual, well it was a little I mean she did things to me I don't know how to describe. Ah! why am I even trying to explain my self just no, won't happen again. I don't think my sanity could take it.
"Just stop, please. I will figure something out, so no need"

She giggled and as she was about to start talking again Dan interrupted her. My saviour, I don't know for how much longer would I be able to withstand Lizz's bulling before breaking into tears.
"Okay, I think that's enough for now. Either way, a weapon is not a problem. With your absurd strength pretty much anything can be a weapon, you might as well tie some rocks to your gloves and you are all set. By the way, we need to head to the guild. Dianna told us that when we got another member we need to report to her. That way she can size them up and determine if they can or can't go. After that, it would be issuing the permit, us getting ready and departing"
With all said and done we began to walk towards the adventurers guild. Don't get me wrong I do want to go with them, but Dianna is a bit scary and I don't want to know how she is planning on testing me. Either way, it can't be too bad, right? As these thoughts continued to cross my mind I was in auto-pilot mode just following behind Dan and Lizz. Before I knew it I was already walking inside Dianna's office where the massive grin that was plastered on her face gave me the chills.
"You know I was ninety percent confident it would be you these two would bring"
As she spoke her voice was filled with glee for reasons I don't know, and that scared me. She stood up and walked forward her eyes fixed on me like those of a predator looking at pray. I tensed up a little, I mean anyone would if someone almost twice your size with muscles all over came at you with that look in their eyes.
"Well, I am sure it will be safe for the three of you. I have been asking George to report on your progress and he talked high of your development. But, I would rather check that out myself. It's not like I want to fight you, and check and that supposed monstrous strength"
Your intentions are showing! And don't give me that grin! I have also heard a lot of things about Dianna in the last month. For starters, she is or was an A+ rank adventurer before she retired to become the guild master of this branch. However, I also heard that her battle strength is S rank. The only reason she is not an S rank is because of her temper and the fact she had just reached A+ when she retired. Many say that if she had retired half a year later she would have been the sixth human S rank currently alive. As for me, well, I am currently E+ I just need two more quests to rank up. However, Dan, Lizz and George say my strength is at least D+. Moreover, George assures me that with more training I could get to A or even S with enough luck which I wholeheartedly doubt.
"Is that really necessary Mis. Dianna? I could call one of the instructors to..."
Before the receptionist that had accompanied us could finish Dianna interrupted her. From the looks of things, she must be a newcomer since the other receptionists seem to have a somewhat lack of respect for Dianna's authority. This is because she tends to abuse it sometimes to play pranks or other things like our current situation.
"It's fine, it's fine, we are just gonna have a little spar and that will be the end of it"
Everybody apart from her had a complicated face. I hadn't been present but I heard the stories of Dianna's last spar. To put it simply, it wasn't pretty, the area was destroyed and her quote on quote sparring partner ended up with a few fractures despite being a B ranker. To tell the truth, the idea of 'sparing' with her sends shivers down my spine and makes me fear for my life.
"I see there is no stopping you, but at least keep in mind what happened last time and don't cause a massive ruckus okay?"
Dianna gave a simple nod with her massive grin still plastered on her face.
"Okay, now that that's settled let's go"
I had no input in the entire thing, and I bet it wouldn't have mattered anyway. With a sigh, I began walking behind her towards the training grounds. I Wonder how much does she plan on using me as her punching bag. My soul ability makes me the perfect punching bag because no matter how badly wounded I am as long as I am still alive I will heal up in no time. A fracture? at most a day of rest should be enough and that's what makes me stressed. She won't contain herself and pummel me into a pulp. After all, I will be back to full health in a day or two but that does not remove the fact that it will hurt. I don't like pain! why does this have to happen to me?

The Designated: Out of Control
It happened quicker than anyone would have imagined. Multiple hurricanes were one thing. People had dealt with that in the past. But, like kids playing dominoes, one thing crashed into another. Areas affected by hurricanes needed resources all along the Gulf and East Coasts drew rescuers and resources away from other parts of the country. When wildfires lit up the Pacific coast and mid-west, those areas were already understaffed. Driven by hurricanes in the Pacific basin, uncontrolled wildfires burned through towns, destroying everything in their paths. Across the Pacific, Asia didn't escape. From the Philippines, across China, into Indochina, and Bangladesh and India. Typhoons and cyclones pounded the coasts and far inland. Widespread flooding forced millions from their homes and across international borders. Mexico was hit hard and thousands died in mudslides as Katia slammed into their East Coast. The refugees fled north and west. Rumours started that hundreds of thousands were headed for the US border. Instead of running out of steam in the southern US, several hurricanes tore up the eastern seaboard, devastating cities and renewing their strength before veering east across the Atlantic. Maria and Ophelia veered east and slammed into Europe, reaching as far as the Netherlands and Russia before finally dissipating. After that, too many weather stations were offline to provide any form of co-ordinated information or warnings. Wildfires in Portugal burned ahead of the storms, fanned by hurricane winds. They sparked wildfires leapfrogging across Europe, beyond any one country's ability to cope. Already uneasy from multiple terrorist attacks over the summer, anti-refugee groups seized the opportunity to stage protests across Europe. Some turned violent as they clashed with police forces. Several governments declared martial law to quell the rioting and enforce evacuations along the path of the storms. Rumour and speculation overwhelmed facts. Unrest spilled over into widespread violence. Then sickness broke out in the displaced populations. Within a matter of a dozen weeks, tens of millions died. In the coming winter months hundreds more would follow. The Designated Project was activated.
