《The Man who Could not Die》Chapter 8: Fall

Backtracking as fast as I could, I tried to escape the naked-thumbs that chased after me. Reaching into my bag, I took out two knives and threw them at two of the creatures, managing to drop them and buy me a few seconds as the stupid things stumbled on the fallen bodies.

With them momentarily halted, I turned around and began to sprint for a moment, hoping to reach the narrow corridor sooner. In response, a few of the creatures also began to chase after me while running, separating themselves from the growing group of those creatures that was chasing.

Noticing this, I turned around and stood my ground, preparing myself to fight this detached group in order to take advantage of their smaller numbers to take them out before the rest of the group comes. Dodging the strike of the first one, I quickly killed him before using his body as a shield and blocking the combined attacks of another four. With the other creatures spears stuck on their friends body, I quickly took advantage of this and struck them down before plucking their spears from the body of the creature and throwing them at the coming mob, causing the stupid creatures to once again stumble on the bodies of their injured or dead comrades.

This time, I moved in and finished off a few of them in the initial chaos, before picking up two of their spears and running away. Once again stopping after baiting a few of them, I turned around and launched the spears at the group following me, causing the above scenario to repeat once more. With the effectiveness of this strategy, I continued to repeat it. Most of the times using their own spears against them, although a few times I was forced to use my own knives, and more and more as time went on due to my decreasing stamina. Nonetheless, the strategy was rather effective and allowed me to defeat quite a good amount of them, until…

Fuck.

Reaching into my bag, I could no longer find any extra knives that I could use. And before I could think of something else, an over head swipe tried to strike me.

Dammit.

Barely dodging it, I continued to step back. Then, from my left, one of the naked-thumbs plunged a spear towards me.

Ah Shit!

Although I tried to dodge it, it managed to scrape my side. Before I could even regain my footing, two of the monsters tripped each other, a sight that had become quite common and saved me a few knives here and there. However, when they did, one of the creatures behind the two came into my view, and he reacted to seeing me by throwing his cheap spear towards my direction, apparently learning something from my past actions.

*Clang*

I smacked the spear out of the air with my short sword. This action however, left me vulnerable as I felt a hot sensation in my abdomen. Looking down as I continued to carefully backtrack, I could see that they had finally managed to stab me.

It had been 50 minutes now that I had spent battling against these disgusting creatures. At first I had been able to easily able to defend myself against them, and using my strategy, taken out a rather large amount of them, causing me to grow prideful and arrogant at my quickly developing fighting skill. This was however, an unintended trap, as it was not that I was growing more skillful, but that my enemy was grossly incompetent.

“Hyaaa!”

From my two sides, two more creatures tried to stab me. And would have almost succeeded if I not for my well time swipe. I had just lost my footing on a rock, and it was doubtful that I would be able to last for much longer.

Yes, these fools who are about to kill me are in fact incompetent. They have no technique in their spear wilding, merely stabbing and swiping when an opportunity becomes apparent. And sometimes even when it doesn’t, as they would often end up striking one of their own far more often than me. And that’s not even counting the amount of times they have tripped as they chased me backwards through this corridor, of course not counting the instances when it happened by my design, but simply as a result of their shit balance and inability to walk in a crowd. Seriously, I had yet to fall down despite being forced to walk backwards, but these idiot’s constantly failed at walking forward. Truly pathetic.

Yet here we are, with me about to be killed off by these pathetic creatures. If this dungeon was a game, it wouldn’t be a very interesting one. The monsters are rather easy to kill, and with good equipment and healing you could get by easily if you know how it works. However, this is real life. For an ordinary person, there is no natural health regen. Nor may the opportunity to heal themselves become apparent, as unlike a game it doesn’t take a critical hit to kill a person, but just a good strike at their leg or arm to incapacitate them could become a death sentence.

Nor is there unlimited stamina, or having stamina that only affect attacks and sprinting. No, after 50 minutes, which is without doubt far longer than I should be able to, I was completely exhausted, and my body felt extremely heavy even for just doing something as simple as walking. Fighting, dodging, walking, running, all of these actions tired you out, and you would progressively get more sluggish as you continued to fight. And also unlike a game, a normal person wouldn’t have a chance to respawn and try again. All it took was one mistake and it was game over. Truly, a real life dungeon is a frightening thing, and I couldn’t understand why anyone would want to come down to this hell hole.

Luckily for me, I was immortal. Unluckily for me however, I seriously doubted that I would be able to fight once they killed me. I didn’t know what they would do once I died, but I had a feeling they would continue to try to kill me forever, and unlike the Minotaur, they wouldn’t give me time to revive and think about the situation.

Shit my arms!

Despite the size of the corridor continuing to shrink, more and more of them were able to graze me than when we were of the wide corridor. This being due to my rapidly depleting stamina, as I was no longer able to put pressure on them and force them back. It was clear that my time was almost over, as despite having killed a few of them, their numbers didn’t seem to decrease at all.

“FUCK!”

Again, the idiots had tripped themselves. However, this time I was a little too close to them, and one of them managed to slash my ankle while falling, dropping me to the floor. Not giving up, I continued to swing my shortsword around, the last weapon on me as I had long used all my knives as projectiles. Despite my best attempts however, I was unable to stop all the spears that began to come in my direction. And despite the creatures being too stupid to coordinate and surround me, they managed to stab my heart, finally killing me…

Waking up, I could see a few of the creatures around me shrieking in pain, their mouths and hands burning up. It appears that the liquid that I turn into when I die is rather painful for their sensitive naked skins, something that brought a smile to my face. However, this smile only lasted for a short while as a flurry of stabs rained down on me…

Once again, I was-

Waking up-

In a corridor inside one of the many dungeons that littered the world, the sight of hairless pink creatures could be seen ceaselessly stabbing at the dead body of a man. They were stupid these creatures, so they didn’t understand the concept of stopping, of giving up at the unkillable, so they continued to stab this boy that would not die, repeating the same futile actions over and over. However, they were not completely unredeemable, and had a modicum of intellect in them. Enough at least, to learn a few rules:

One, do not eat the body. For the body would soon turn to liquid and burn all that touched it.

Two, do not leave your weapons inside the body. For they would soon be spat out with the sharp part that was left on the body deformed, rendering their cheap spears even more worthless than they already were.

And three, do not stop stabbing. For the one time they did the boy stood up and began attacking them. Thus, following these three rules they had learned from experience, the creatures continued to endlessly stab at the body on the ground, not giving it the luxury to become conscious for more than a second.
