In ancient times humans learned various mystical arts from the Gods. They learned how to form magic arrays that can protect entire mountains, cast spells capable of burning an empire, cultivate powerful martial arts, concoct pills that can revive the dead, and forge weapons with the power to split the sea. All of these abilities used a natural energy known as qi which is generated from the environment and within a person's body. Learning these skills led to a power-based society where the strong rule over the weak and the law of the jungle sits above all. Only the masters that unlock the power of these mystical arts are able to live a truly free life.

Humans praised the Gods for years and gave many thanks to them for teaching them these skills. The God they praised most was named Qing Shen, God of Gods. His powers were limitless and he was known as the first God to be born in the God Realm. He gave the various Gods that came after him their powers and led them as a fair king. However, Qing Shen was murdered during a coup led by the Dark God Siwang. This led to a war known as the "Great Darkness" in the Mortal Realm. Human practitioners of the mystic arts fought alongside the Gods in order to defeat Siwang and his armies. The war lasted for nearly a hundred years and resulted in countless deaths on both sides. Not only humans, but even many Gods were killed during the fighting.

Eventually Siwang's coup was crushed and his soul was sealed in the King's Amulet, a necklace created by Qing Shen before he died in order to imprison the Dark God. With him gone the Dark God's armies fled in fear of punishment and the Great Darkness came to an end. Years passed and the King's Amulet was stolen from the God Realm and brought to the mortal world by a group of human worshippers known as the Dark Pyramid. Their one goal was to resurrect the Dark God and finish the war that he had started. This led to the Gods punishing all of humanity by leaving the Mortal World forever. With the Gods gone humans began going to war amongst themselves using the powers that the Gods bestowed upon them, and the first target became the Dark Pyramid. After several long, grueling years of bloodshed the war came to an end with the Dark Pyramid being destroyed and its leaders executed. However, the King's Amulet went missing from the Dark Pyramid's possession at the end of the war and it was never seen again.
