《When Paths Converge: A MHA Fanfic》40. Rescue Training

“Welcome to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint! Otherwise known as the USJ, here we have every kind of natural disaster and accident you can think of! Can you stand the heat of the Fire Zone? Hope we have some strong swimmers in the Flood Zone. You better watch your step in the Landslide Zone!” Thirteen announced to the group, class 1-A staring out at the massive domed building’s interior. Yui couldn’t help but compare it to an amusement park. How much money did they spend to build it? And then there’s maintenance...
“For those of you who do not know me, my name is Thirteen, I am a Rescue Hero. I focus more on saving people in natural disasters and accidents like the ones you will be trained on today. My Quirk is called Black Hole, and it breaks things down to a molecular level.” Thirteen went on to explain, holding up one of her gloved hands and the caps on her fingertips that contained her Quirk.
“Oh, your Quirk is really useful during rescues because you can just suck up all the stuff that’s in the way!” Hado was bouncing, the spirals in her hair that resembled horns bobbing with the motion.
“That’s true...but my Quirk can be very dangerous, it can even kill if I’m not careful. I’m sure a lot of you have Quirks that can be very harmful if you lost control.” Yui bit her lip, nails digging into her palms when her mind flashed back to when she’d been hit by Trigger. “But! Your Quirks are not evil! No Quirk is villainous, it’s a tool for you to use, and you’re all here because you want to help people. So, I hope you leave here today with knowledge on how you can save people!”
“Alright, kiddos! We’ll start off in the Flood Zone!” Midnight announced, holding up her coiled whip like a baton as she led the way down the stairs.
“Will your gear be okay in water, Yui?” Togata asked as he fell in step beside her. His cape ruffling out behind him, she wondered if he took inspiration from All Might’s design, she’d already heard some of their classmates comparing the two. Maybe it was the cape, and the fact they were both blonde and blue-eyed.
“Oh, yeah, the computer is built from special components that protect it from water submersion, the same as my headset and the taser staff should be fine unless I activate it.” She smiled softly at his concern. “If it activates though...well hopefully I’m the only one in the water. And then someone can hopefully save me from drowning.”
“Oh! I’ll save you, Yui!” Hado hooked their arms together, as she smiled wide at her.
“I-I can reach her faster...” Yui blinked at the rare bout of confidence from Amajiki, “My vines and tentacles reach farther than you can.”
The girl at her side puffed out her cheeks in a pout, “I can propel myself with blasts from my hands.”
Yui couldn’t help but chuckle at the antics, a warm feeling blooming in her chest. “Hey, at least I won’t drown!” It was really nice that she had friends who actually wanted to help her while she was at school, she hadn’t really expected anyone wanting to be friends with her when she’d started going to UA.
“As long as they don’t start fighting trying to reach you first.” Togata chuckled, before he gave her a thumbs up, “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you don’t drown.”

“Hey! Miri, we wouldn’t let her drown. We know how to prioritize.” Hado glared playfully at him, her grip tightening a bit on Yui’s arm, “Saving lives is more important than a stupid competition.”
“Glad to hear it, Hado-san! Let’s see you put those words to the test!” Midnight called out, a grin on her face. “Let’s see how fast you all can save our drowning victims!” She pointed her whip out to the water area, “Not actual people, so don’t worry, we have robotic mannequins in these simulations. But don’t forget to give it your all, Aizawa will be getting the footage and reviewing it, so don’t slack off just because he’s not here in person.” With that, the training began.
It was going pretty well, Yui could see the electric signals the robots gave off with her headset and could help guide her classmates to their locations. Shimizu demonstrated how to perform CPR, Haya was one of the best in the flood zone since she could move the fastest, and they found out Yamashi sunk like a stone, and that wasn’t just a pun on his Quirk.
The teen made up for it in the Landslide zone, where his Quirk could easily move rubble and earth, Hayashi’s vines and roots helped keep the unstable ground in place, and Naganuma used his natural strength to move large pieces of rubble away to get to the robots since his Quirk would only make the ground worse. Todani was an excellent eye in the sky and could carry the robots to the recovery area where Shimizu and Tomono did first aid.
It was all going pretty well until they were at the Avalanche zone. Yui was trying to hide the way her body trembled and shook as they stepped through the snow. The suit helped keep in some heat but her hands and face was uncovered and it was frigid in this area. If there was one thing in nature beside spiders Yui hated, it was snow and ice. Her scars ached and cramped, and she got sluggish, and not just in a normal person way. Maybe it was a side effect of her Quirk being technology based, but getting too cold made her even think slower. At least as a vigilante she had more layers since she was concealing the suit, and she was constantly moving to catch bad guys and Izu was there with hot coffee and they wouldn’t go out when the weather got really bad. Slipping on ice and breaking something or getting concussed while you were two vigilante children, one who was trying to hide from the law, well, hospitals were something to be avoided.
Yui clenched her teeth to stop them from chattering, Really need…better winter insul-….insulation. She was rubbing her hands together to try to keep them warm, her eyes a little clouded over before she blinked back into focus to see Amajiki standing in front of her, navy eyes worried.
“Y-Yamazawa…a-are you okay? Sensei has been c-calling you.”
The teen blinked, suppressing another shudder as she nodded slowly, “Y-yeah, I’m fine…just c-cold.”
He watched her for a moment before he took off the cape part of his costume, putting it over her shoulders. “H-Here, i-it should help keep you warm.”
Her fingers fisted in the fabric as she held it close, “Wh-what about you? D-Don’t you need it to keep warm?”
“I’ll be okay. This isn’t normal for you, so you need it more.” He nodded to where their classmates were waiting. “Let’s catch up.” He started to lead the way, Yui following behind him as that warm feeling sparked again in her chest.

“Can’t handle the cold, Yamazawa?” She blinked at Tomono’s tone, resisting the urge to stick her tongue out at him like she’d do to Dabi.
“It is really cold out here.” Shimizu was shivering, blowing warm air into her hands.
“Mind over matter! I refuse to be cold!” Naganuma grinned, Yui had no idea how he wasn’t shivering since he was shirtless, only wearing a dark green jean vest with multiple pockets and bare arms.
“You’re going to get hy-hypothermia in winter, you oaf.” Hayashi sniffled, the little multicolored flowers that decorated his hair were closed up. “You need an actual jacket in winter.”
“Hah! I think I’d be more intimidating like this. And it’s just a little snow. We’ll be fine.” He waved away his friend’s concern.
“Yui, are you okay? Your lips are blue.” Hado asked, standing right in front of her as she tugged a bit on the cape, “Aww Tama gave you his cape! That was so sweet!” She hopped over to Amajiki giving him a thumps up which he looked away from bashfully.
“M-my lips are blue? Does it look good, should I make it a part of my costume?” She tried to tease.
“Oh, teal lipstick to match your costume’s accents would look pretty cool!” Hado smiled before she leaned against her side, wrapping the cape around herself. “Here, we can keep each other warm.” Yui tried to ignore the heat that rose to her cheeks at that. But hey, at least it helped warm her up.
The group split up in two, Yui going with Amajiki, Hado, Togata, Haya and Todani as they searched the area, Yui shakily pointing out any electrical signals and Todani calling out any he saw from the sky, the owl-teen seemed perfectly at home in the colder temperatures.
“Yui, Yui!” She blinked at Hado’s whisper, turning to face her as she helped her dig out a robot. “What are you going to do for the Sports Festival?”
Yui’s nose crinkled, “Oh, I won’t be p-participating.”
“What? Why not?!” She exclaimed, before she covered her mouth, looking around as if she expected the area to collapse into another avalanche. “What about the hero internships? If you don’t do the Festival, how are you going to get anyone to request you?”
“I-I want to go Underground.” She bit her lip as she continued to dig, “I don’t really need people knowing my Quirk, what I look like,” She didn’t want to be a flashy hero, she’d rather be like Aizawa: quick, efficient, avoiding the media and the drama that came with them. “Nedzu already approved my request. And I can just work with one of the teachers. I might ask Eraserhead.”
It’s not like her classmates knew she’d been a vigilante, or an ex-villain, it was better that way, right? What would they even think? She knew most people’s view of villains was…well, it wasn’t flattering. Most civilians didn’t bat an eye with how badly villains were hurt, as long as they were stopped. They wouldn’t want anything to do with you if they knew. Yui blinked at the whisper in her head, shaking it as they finally got the robot out of the snow. That was nothing, and it’d be fine, she wasn’t Hijack anymore, and her past was just that. It didn’t have to come to light.
By the time they’d gotten all the robots out of the snow, even Naganuma was shivering, just a bit. Yui was almost happy the last stop was the Fire zone, and sure, extreme heat could have a similar effect on her, but she rarely got so hot that it was an issue.
“Okay, kiddos. There are robots in the burning buildings, make sure you get to them before they get too roasted! And be careful of the integrity of the buildings, if you aren’t careful, they could come down!” Midnight called out to them.
Yui was already searching for electrical signals, pointing one out that had an open window, the only problem was the wall of flames shooting out of it. Togata frowned, “I can get up, but I can’t phase through with carrying it…”
“If I use my waves, it could put out the fire…but it’d probably collapse the building.” Hado added, frowning softly as she considered her options. Yui handed Amajiki his cape back, looking up at the fire escape that was above the window.
“I got it.” She aimed the grapple brace and was shooting through the air before she was swinging through the opening, arms covering her face from the heat of the flames. She narrowed her eyes from the smoke, missing her old goggles that were more protective than her holographic lens, covering her mouth with her arm as she moved around the room carefully until she found the robot.
“Seriously, how much money do they have to build these things?” She muttered as she lifted it over her shoulder, making her way back to the window, she swore she saw, yep, there was the light post. She aimed the brace again before she was shooting past the flames. She skidded to a stop, the barb retracting back into its casing as she turned to the group.
“Yui! That was dangerous, you could have been burnt, you don’t have a fireproof Quirk!” Hado ran up to her, reaching out to touch her arms.
“Um, no. But I have a fireproof suit. I wasn’t in trouble of getting burned. But maybe I should get a hood added to protect my hair.” She shrugged, before she put the robot down, “I wasn’t in danger from the fire. And now I’m warmed up and can think like myself again, let’s go save some robots!” She grinned at her, scanning around for another signal.
Tomono looked over, his amethyst eyes narrowed and calculating before Shimizu touched his arm, making him turn to her.
“Come on, Hideki! Let’s help them.” She smiled brightly, tugging on his arm until he was following beside her. The teen gave her a bright smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, not that she noticed as she turned to a fire, focusing on ‘helping’ the robots that were pulled out from the blaze.
Tomono frowned as he watched the teen once again come out from the flames unscathed, his eyes narrowing again. “I’ll have to do some digging”
“How was your field trip to the USJ? Did you have fun?” Yamada asked, making Yui look up from her plate as the family gathered around the table for supper. Izuku was scarfing down food after another day of cleaning the beach, viridian eyes coming up as he paused as he waited for her answer.
“It was training, Zashi, it wasn’t meant to be fun.” Aizawa muttered as he ate. The blonde flicked a grain of rice at him.
“You’re only young once, Sho! And the USJ is pretty amazing, so I bet she had some fun. What did you think, Livewire?”
“Hmm, it was impressive. Hated the Avalanche Zone.” She couldn’t help but snort a bit, “I freaked out my friends when I swung into a building when it was on fire. Oh yeah, Izu remind me to add a hood to my suit, and something to keep me warm in winter.”
“They didn’t know it was fireproof, did they?” He giggled, “They must have been worried-“
“Wait, wait, you have friends? Like, people you consider more than just your classmates?” Yamada asked, his eyes shining as he smiled wide. “Nem said you were pretty close to three of your classmates, you should invite them over!”
She blinked, raising an eyebrow at him, “I thought it was supposed to be a secret that you two were our dads? We already hang out a lot after school. We do Quirk training and we might be doing a study group since some of them have issues with English.”
The blonde pouted at her, “Come on, imagine their faces when you bring them here and they see us. It’ll be classic, especially when they see Sho! They might turn to stone!”
“Oh! You should totally do that!” Izuku grinned, the look more impish like when he and Himi got together to prank people. “We could wait until they’re all settled into the living room and then have Dad and Papa just stroll in.”
“Amajiki would probably faint.” Yui reminded him, she could appreciate a good prank, and she’d love to see Hado’s and Togata’s reactions but she didn’t want to stress out the anxious bean.
“If Hado and Togata knew, the whole school would know. It’s not happening.” Aizawa glared at his husband’s pout. “I’m not dealing with teenaged drama. You and Nemuri are enough.”
“You act like we’re as bad as the kids.”
“You are. You two gossip worse than our students.” He muttered, “You two arrange your student’s seats depending on if you’ll think they’ll be cute together.”
“Hey! I don’t do that! I arrange them based on their personality types.” He huffed, pointing his chopsticks at him.
“You have bets with the other teachers and which students will date each other. It’s immature.”
“You guys really do that? Do you have bets on how many students Dad expels?” Yui asked, “Nedzu mentioned something about winning bets.”
“That rat is the worst one. And yes, they do. Don’t gamble, problem children.” Aizawa sighed, rubbing his temple as if he was just imaging what shenanigans the two would get into if they started to get into the betting pools in school, the marketing and support classes were the worse ones.
“Nedzu has never lost a bet, it’s scary.” Yamada shivered, “Seriously, I think his Quirk gives him future vision or something.”
“Are you really scared of Nedzu? He’s not that intimidating.” Yui raised an eyebrow, “He’s been really nice to me at least.”
“You fascinate him, Yui.” Aizawa sighed, “You’re like a puzzle to him, and he loves puzzles. Just be careful, okay? Nedzu doesn’t always have the best…perception of human emotions. If anything he does bothers you, just tell me. I’ll talk to him.”
The teen blinked, “Sure? But it has really been good, dad. Nedzu is really interesting to learn from, and really, nothing’s he’s said or done has bothered me.” I mean even if he does....should I even mention it? Can we really tackle Endeavor without him helping us convince the Commision? Yui grew silent under the suspicious gaze of Aizawa before shaking her head. She could handle it, it couldn’t be worse than dealing with Miyu. “So, Izu, find anything cool at the beach?
The green bean perked up, his eyes shining “Oh yeah! I found a flamethrower! I bet I can fix it-“
“Absolutely not. You two do not need access to fire.” Aizawa said firmly, narrowing his eyes at the pout he got shot with.
“But Yui-nee has her mini torch-“
“Izu! He wasn’t supposed to know about that!” She hissed, nudging him with her elbow before those black eyes narrowed at her.
“Hand it over.”
“…no.”
“It is not a request, Yui.”
“Please, dad? I promise not to use it on a spider, I’ll just get you or sick a cat on it! Violet loves hunting spiders. I’m really sorry I set the corner of my room on fire that one time, it won’t happen again, I swear!” She crossed her heart.
“You have access to the support labs with Power Loader, you don’t need something like that in the house.” He argued.
“I work on stuff here too, you wouldn’t even have known about it if Izu hadn’t said anything.” She groaned, trying to copy Izu’s puppy dog look to no avail.
“What is with you children and fire?” He groaned, rubbing his eyes as he rolled his eyes up to the ceiling.
Yui couldn’t help but shrug, “I set a lot of crap on fire learning how to build support gear on my own. And putting Dabi out when he flamed on. I got used to having an extinguisher nearby.”
“Oh! That’s a good idea for a support weapon! A brace that can be used as an extinguisher.” Izuku grinned, pulling a notebook out and scribbling down ideas. “That would have been useful in the Fire Zone.”
“Oh, and a mask to filter smoke.” Yui suggested, leaning over to watch him, “Maybe something collapsible so it can fit in a pocket?”
Aizawa groaned as the two started to ramble about support items, knowing he lost the torch argument until his daughter tried to kill a spider by cleansing it with fire. Yamada only chuckled as he patted his husband’s shoulder.
