《When Paths Converge: A MHA Fanfic》25. The Whole Vigilante Thing

It finally happened, the incident that put them on the Hero Commission’s radar. They knew even with Eraserhead’s support it couldn’t last, but they hadn’t quite expected how it went down. It had happened after Yui had turned fourteen, they were doing vigilante work for a little over two years now and had done a good job at keeping out of the media, or with Yui to erasing all videos of them online. Little virus with facial recognition does wonders for keeping two kids no one is looking for anyway off the web. Having Tsukauchi and Eraserhead covering for them certainly helped on the analog level.
...Only for that to be blown out the window from an incident that had started as a simple mugging. Unfortunately, the guy had slammed Izuku against a building, head smacking into the brick. When Yui had advanced on the guy, he had panicked, his hands turning into drills to blast his way into the building to try to get away.
Except the building was a news station…and they had run right into the frame of their weather forecast. The crew was screaming, the boss booming not to miss a second, and the mugger and vigilantes had frozen as they looked at each other.
“Fuck this,” Yui growled, “They can’t run this if I swear right?”
“Um nope…I think they’re recording live…” Izuku mumbled as he tightened his grip on the bo staff, swaying a bit as he let out a little giggle. Great, more than likely a concussion.
“Who the fuck records live? Kami this is a mess.” They launched themselves at the mugger and had him on the ground in a moment, zip tying him so he couldn’t move.
“That was quite a show! Thank you for your hard work heroes!” A reporter walked over to them, holding a microphone out to them.
Izuku tilted his head, “We’re not heroes…”
“Null, stop. You, back off. We gotta go before the cops show up.” Yui started to pull Izuku back through the hole in the wall.
“Wait! What do you go by?” She called out.
“Oh, I’m Null, and this is ControlFreak.” Izuku chirped his answer.
Yui groaned, “He’s going to kill us.” She managed to drag him off just in time before the police arrived.
Yui had an arm around Izuku’s waist as she grappled down onto the balcony. She’d had Izuku call Granny and ask her to meet her at Eraser’s apartment while she carried him, not trusting him on his feet when he’d been stumbling like a drunk earlier. He giggled as she put him on his feet, keeping an arm around his waist as they slid the door open and walked inside.
Yui froze when she realized all four adults in their lives, minus Dabi but he was barely considered an adult anyway, were waiting in the room. The TV was playing their little…debacle, it seemed on loop, just great…
“Hey…um, Izu kinda has a concussion so if any yelling can wait until after that’s gone…pretty please?” She winced at the red -eyed glare Eraser narrowed at her. Recovery Girl tapped her cane against his leg, huffing as she walked over to them.

“She’s right, Shouta. You can yell at them all you want after I heal him.” She commanded, “Alright dearies, get rid of the goggles and masks.” Yui helped Izuku out of his, sitting him down on the couch so she could look him over easier.
The elderly woman squinted up at them, before giving them a soft smile. “My, aren’t you a pretty pair.”
Izuku’s face flushed bright red, before he let out a giggle, “Gr-Granny…”
Yui felt her face tint pink as she looked away. She put their masks and goggles on the coffee table, glancing up at Eraser and almost wishing she hadn’t. He was still glaring at them. Yamada had on a shit-eating grin as he recorded them, ignoring the way his husband glared at him. Tsukauchi was even sitting at the table, staring at his cup of coffee as if it’d give him the answers to the universe. And if how low the pot was any indication, well, maybe that much caffeine could give him a glimpse into omniscience.
“There you go, dearie…please be more careful, that was a nasty bump. You’d have to go to the hospital if I wasn’t here.” Granny’s voice sounded as tired as she made her patients.
“Thank you, Granny, I’ll be more careful, I promise.” Izuku swore, trying to give her a bashful smile.
“I know you’ll try,” She patted his knee before going back to sit at the table, “Alright, Shouta, they’re all yours.”
Yui yelped as gray bands of fabric twisted around them, securing them to the couch as the man stepped forward. The two couldn’t help but gulp as they looked into glowing red eyes, and sure, they could escape from the bindings, but really? Would you want to further enrage the pissed off panther in the room?
“What were you thinking? Running onto a news set while they were broadcasting? And then swearing and attacking someone?” Eraser asked, every word enunciated and his voice measured. It would have been better if he’d yelled, this felt like a build up to something worse.
“He was a mugger? And used his Quirk to cause property damage, we couldn’t let him get away!” Izuku argued before a tug on the weapon made him squeak.
“This is bad…the Commission is already asking why we haven’t caught you two. They’re putting out an apprehend on sight, for any heroes who see you.” Tsukauchi mumbled from the table.
“They suddenly care now? We’ve been doing this for over two years now!” Yui growled.
“You started to trend on social media. And you have a lot of support. People online are telling their stories on you two saving them. ‘Null is so sweet! He made sure I was okay after I was attacked!’ ‘Control is so cool! I saw her call a villain a living embodiment of garbage before she drop kicked him!’ ‘I was saved by Null and he was a total dork. But he helped me through some walls I built and I have no idea where I’d be without him telling me I could be a hero.’ It goes on and on.” Mic looked up at them from his phone.

“So the Commission just cares if we’re popular? Kami, that’s stupid. We’re helping people!” Izuku huffed, sinking down into the couch as he tried to cross his arms but couldn’t with the capture weapon in the way.
“Yeah, illegally. You’re vigilantes!” Eraser growled, his hair floating as his Quirk flared up.
There was a moment of silence before the two glanced at each other before Yui looked at Tsukauchi. “Tsuki, what’s the definition of a vigilante?”
He groaned as he looked up at them, “A person who uses their Quirk illegally to harm or apprehend persons of malicious intent or purpose. Why?”
Yui grinned as she held up her gloved hands, gloves she’d never taken off while she was a vigilante. “My Quirk allows me to create microchips from my hands. When they attach to a person, or something electronic, I can control them for eight minutes. But they only can be created by my hands. And I’ve worn these the entire time, I’ve never used my Quirk to beat up people.”
The adults stared at her, Tsukauchi looked like he was going to flip the table while Aizawa’s lips twitching as though he was resisting one of his Cheshire grins. Mic started to giggle, holding his stomach, “Let me guess, Null doesn’t use a Quirk either?”
“Can’t use something I don’t have.” The reply was quiet but firm, the voice only shaking a little bit. Yui wriggled her hand to firmly grasp his, squeezing as she glared at them, promising pain to anyone who thought anything was wrong with the boy who so selflessly put his life on the line for others.
The adults didn’t move for a moment, their faces blank before the detective’s face smacked into the wood again. Mic started to use his Quirk in surprise when a glare from his husband had cancelled it.
“WHAAAaaaat? You don’t have a Quirk, lil’ listener? Really? I always thought you had a mental Quirk or maybe a cuteness one, or that your smile had sun power.” Mic gushed, leaning forward and putting his hands on the coffee table between them.
“Or a trouble magnet Quirk. Or attracting people with troubled pasts.” Aizawa’s usual gruff tone was soft as he watched him. “You’ve been doing better than most fledging heroes without a Quirk for years.”
Izuku blinked those doe-like green eyes up at them, “You…you aren’t kicking me out?”
Mic’s brow furrowed as he turned to him, “What for, kiddo? We’re not going to kick you out just because you don’t have a Quirk, that’d be stupid. We’ve known you long enough to know how capable you are.”
“It wouldn’t be logical to judge you based on something so biased. I only even the playing field with two-thirds of Quirks. I fight without a flashy Quirk. You have potential, problem child.” The capture weapon had unraveled, wrapping around its owner’s neck.
Izuku didn’t move except for his chest hyperventilating as he worked through the emotional strain, tears of relief flowing from Izuku’s eyes. Seeing Izuku's tears Mic couldn't help himself, launching across the table, banging his knee with a thud. He didn't even give it any mind before wrapping the already breaking down child in his arms, "Sweet little Sun bean, I'm so sorry you could ever think otherwise. I'll do better."
Izuku could only shake his head, unable to get out how much what they've already done meant to him, his throat too tight with wrecking sobs of release. Yui caught his eye, her lips curving into a soft smile as she rubbed his back.
Granny couldn't help but 'tsk' grumbling about 'little gremlins' with a shake of her head, before coming to rest her hand on his shoulder with a reassuring pat. Aizawa seemed a distant son of Granny's at the moment with how he grumbled, but all the same walked forward and ruffled his viridian curls speaking with a soft light in his eyes, “Your place with us isn't contingent on your capabilities or what you have. It’s with who you are."
Tsukauchi just sighed, muttering “We’ll figure this out tomorrow.” He didn't get far though in his walk to the door before he was pulled into a group hug by Mic, who kept spouting out terrible English puns before Izuku was laughing through his tears. "How many brothers does Present Mic have? Two! Past and Future Mic!"
"Good lord, stop. Or at least let me leave."
"Hush, look at his face, take it in. C'mon you try one"
"I- just- ugh-" Tsukauchi screwed up his face before sighing, "Why was I tired today, and the day before?... I keep pulling All-Mighters"
Yui grinned as Present Mic howled with laughter, the feeling of love in the room filling her with a sense of nostalgia and overwhelming her with a feeling of gratitude for whatever force in the universe that had nudged them into each other’s lives. he had never thought that finding an adorable, sunshine child that had adopted her as much as she had him, two crazy siblings that would murder for them even if they didn’t live together anymore, a sleep deprived uncle who held more coffee than blood in his body but would cover for two children defying the law, a strict but loving granny who made sure they were healthy and the two dads who cared for them more than she could bring herself to think of most days would change her life so much.
And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - Winner November 2020 When a young woman is lured back to her homeland for the opportunity of a life time, she must face old fears. But never would she think that facing up to her past would change everything. Is History written by the victors, or by someone or something else...? *** I started writing this a few years ago and eventually fell out of love with it. I never finished it and my newer books are being written in different writing style, and genre with a more planned process. I decided to revisit it for the writathon and found that it wasn't as hopeless as I'd come to think. Hopefully, I've improved as a writer since them so the consistency may vary. Its been good to revisit and analyse my writing which I feel used to have some clunky and obvious dialogue which I'm trying to fix. This will always be my first novel and I hope, with a little exposure, I may come to like it again. Thanks for reading!

8 186Daily life of a cultivation judge
Tired of those cultivators who think it is righteous to eliminate a sect or clan root and stem all in the name of revenge and avoiding future troubles, fights over treasures that end up destroying cities with no consequence whatsoever to the culprit, these psychos whose aim for the peak always involves a trail of carnage and bloodshed in its wake for some reason. Then look no further than the daily life of a cultivation judge. Yang Qing, is a young genius cultivator from a low-tier family whose only safe choice to get resources and hopefully lead an easy life led him to the courts of the Cultivation Order Society. Author’s disclaimer: Hey there this is my first novel so any criticism will be well taken though beware I’m a million-year-old monster who has cultivated the way of the sword to the peak. The daily life of a cultivation judge will be true to its name so it will be heavily on the slice of life lane with a bit of action here and there.Meaning we will see the life of Yang Qing when he clocks in and out. Hopefully, it will be one of those novels you read if you need to relax or are in a slacker mood like one of those otakus who listen to the noises of cicadas in the summer famously used in most animes. And it is in the slacker spirit that chapter release will be on Wednesday,Thursday and Friday. Sank yuuu Cover art by Conny Schneider on Unsplash
