《When Paths Converge: A MHA Fanfic》12. To Try and Absolve Guilt

“Have a little present courtesy of your favorite vigilante! Sent you the footage Tsukauchi. --ControlFreak"
The detective sighed, running a hand through his hair as he looked at the blue post it note on his desk, before he put it in the file with the others. This vigilante had appeared a month ago, and had been tying up villains, muggers, rapists, and everyone else in between and calling in with their location with an untraceable cell phone.
Naomasa Tsukauchi had a feeling this was the work of the villain Hijack, the villain that had betrayed her partners and used her Quirk to send them to the police station. But the only proof he had was that both were experts at hacking, and that their hair matched the description of the villain.
It was only a matter of time before heroes were set to stop the vigilante, even if they were being helpful, he’d have to put them behind bars. One thing he knew, he needed more coffee to deal with this.
Yui sighed as watched the police take another mugger away. She knew the city was big, and that this section was avoided by heroes since it was dirty and housed the poorest people in the city. While not exactly rife with opportunities to create a wealthy fanbase come on! That was the fifth mugger tonight!
She made her way across rooftops, the moon shining full in the sky. After threatening Izu's childhood ‘friend' she’d ran into an idiot trying to mug a young woman on her way home from work. Her fist had snapped into his throat before she could think and there he was, gagging on the floor. She’d tied his wrists together with the zip ties she’d luckily had in his hoodie pocket. Who knew keeping spare junk in her pockets would come in handy?
The woman had called the cops to pick him up, and when she asked if Yui was a hero, she’d snorted before she almost gave her villain name. The woman had asked her if she was alright before she stuttered out that she wasn’t a hero.
“So you’re a vigilante? What’s the alias?”
This woman better not be a fucking reporter. Yui had wracked her brain, the fuck should she call herself, she couldn’t go by Hijack anymore since she controlled her parents…
She'd looked at the woman as the sirens sounded in the distance. “ControlFreak"
And now she’d been out every night for like a month, taking down the scum the heroes were too busy for. Kami, Izu would be so mad if he knew what she was doing. But it…it made her feel better. She was helping people…well not the people she stopped, but still.

Her body turned to the shouting coming from an alley a few buildings down. I should make something for my hearing, I could have missed that. She peered down from the top of the building. A teen boy was in front of a girl, five grown men backing them into the wall.
The man closest to them had a gator mutation, the two on the right had no outward identifiers but one near the back had glowing hands and the last was drooling, the spit eating away the pavement with a sizzling noise.
Yui jumped down to the fire escape when a burst of heat shot up, her eyes widened at the bright cerulean flames that came from the teenaged boy’s body. “Don’t mess with us assholes!”
One of the thugs lifted a hand and a glowing white shield appeared around the group. The teen grunted as the fire went out, the smell of burning flesh wafting through the air as he stumbled back.
“Ha! Can’t even use your Quirk to defend yourself!” the leader barked out a laugh as the barrier fell.
Yui swung down, her foot slamming into the shield user's head and he crumpled. She grabbed the shirts of acid-spit and light-hands and yanked, their heads slammed together and light up guy screamed as the spit splattered his skin. She flipped herself over them when a scaled fist slammed into the drooler. The two collapsed in a pile.
The gator guy snarled, “You’re that fucking Control Bitch! Think you’re hot shit?”
“Hmm, being shit seems to be your job!” she dodged the punch from the other guy, her eyes narrowing at him. Still no Quirk use, what the hell is it? She grabbed his arm before an electric currents surged into her skin. She jumped back, shaking out her hand.
“Get her Taser!” the croc growled out before he turned back to the other two. She resisted the eye roll before she got in close and snapped her leg up, her heel slamming underneath his chin before he fell back.
“Just you and me now, Gatorade. You know, I always wanted gator boots!”
He turned back to her, “I’m a crocodile, bitch!” he ran at her, swiping at her with clawed hands. She yanked the metal tube from its holster on his thigh, it shot up in length until it jammed into his neck. A button press and the fifty thousand volts surged into him. She moved to the side as he tumbled down.
Giving them a probing tap with her boot, Yui nodded to herself before restraining them with her trusty zip ties. She couldn't help but smile to herself over the odd look the cashier gave her for coming in for the third time that week. Taking a seat on top of gator man she swiped open her phone to call her favorite detective. “Hey Tsuki! I got another one for you! Five deadbeats trying to assault some kids. Make sure you call the one dude a gator! Tootles!” she hung up before she turned to the teen and kid. “You guys okay? The cops are on the way. So feel free to take a kick while they’re down. Might be your one chance.”

Suddenly there was a bouncing blonde girl in front of her. “That was so cool! You came down and just kicked ass! Do you do this a lot? Where did you get the stick?” her hair was in two messy buns, and she was wearing a school uniform, Yui didn’t recognize it but it was dirty and probably hadn’t been washed in a while. Her amber eyes were wide and lit up with glee. Yui blinked, She has fangs…maybe a blood quirk?
“I’m guessing you’re okay? What about your friend?” she nodded toward the guy.
He was tall and lean, with pale skin that had a patchwork of purple scars…and staples in his skin. His eyes were a bright blue that was vaguely familiar but she couldn’t place it. His hair was fried and stood up in spikes, dyed a deep black. He was wearing torn jeans and a gray shirt under a black leather jacket.
“Himi, get away from her.” He hissed, grabbing the blonde’s arm to pull her back.
“If I was going to hurt you, I would have, Patches. Now, are you staying for statements?” the sound of sirens was getting closer. “Because if not, we should get the fuck out of here.”
The two turned to look at each other before they ran down the alley. She sighed before she slapped post-its on them before she ran, jumping up the walls to reach the fire escape and make it back to the roof. She followed the duo as they ran, arriving at a vacant warehouse. Why do I find the homeless ones? She took a moment to send the footage of the fight to the detective before she followed them inside.
Yui shouted when she saw the blonde pouring alcohol over the guy’s burnt arm. “Fuck! That’s not what you do, you idiots!”
The girl tilted her head, “Dabi, you said this was good!”
“Its good enough.” He shrugged.
She stared at them before she smacked the bottle out of her hand. “Okay…fuck…what are you two doing out here? Are you both homeless?”
The guy glared down at her before the blonde piped up, “Oh! I have a home but my parents locked me out and I couldn’t get back in! They don’t want me, they said my Quirk makes me a demon!” Her voice was hyper and sweet, like she wasn’t talking about her parents abandoning her.
Yui stared at her for a bit, “Okay…lot to unpack there. What about you?” she turned to the teen.
“Why should I tell you anything?” He snapped.
“Because I have an apartment you can crash at, get a shower, I’ll make some food, and if you stick around, I can help you.” The words came out of her mouth before she could stop them.
They both stared at her, “Are you stupid, we could be murderers!” the guy snapped.
She rolled her eyes as she lowered the face mask and pushed the goggles up. “Dude, I think I can handle an idiot who doesn’t know how to use his Quirk and a cute girl."
His eyes narrowed at her, before the moon shone in through the broken window. His eyes widened, “Holy shit…aren’t you Hijack? You’re a villain!”
She flicked his nose, “I’m not a villain anymore. What villain turns other villains in to the cops?”
“A stupid one…” he mumbled as he rubbed his nose.
“Are you going to accept my damn offer or not? It’s limited time only and the timer only has about five minutes left. So tick-tock, Patches,” She snapped as she crossed her arms over her chest.
“Ooh! Ooh! I’m in! I’d kill someone for a shower!” The blonde waved her hand up and down.
“No murder necessary, but I like the energy.” She looked at the guy. “Well?”
He shot the blonde a look that was part annoyance, part exasperation and part acceptance. “Fine! Name’s Dabi.” He grumbled out.
“I’m Himiko Toga!” the blonde linked her arm through hers.
“My name is Yui Andenryū. It’s a pleasure,” her voice was dry and sarcastic, but Dabi gave a snort and Himiko let out a giggle. So maybe the night wasn’t a total bust.

The Ordinary Life of Tom Nobody
[participant in the 2018 NaNoWriMo Royal Road challenge] The Ordinary Life of Tom Nobody is a LitRPG system story where each person transitions into the system, or SCHEMA as this system is known, innocent and unaware of his former life. Following the tutorial, memories return, but by this point, each person has a better chance of accepting their new world. It also gives them an opportunity to start from scratch, fresh without all the baggage of their former lives dictating their decisions in the early stages of the process. I don’t expect this will necessarily turn into an action-packed heroic tale, my intent is to create a character who wants to have just an ordinary, but reasonably comfortable life. I don’t know myself how well he will succeed, there may be twists and Tom may discover some heroism hidden deep inside. I guess we’ll find out together. This is my first writing attempt. I’ve wanted to write all my life, but I’ve never been able to develop the proper discipline to put in the work. I hope I complete the challenge and work my way past this hump. I am writing this as part of the NaNoWriMo Royal Road Challenge. While I will try to self-edit as I go, the challenge requires close to 2,000 words a day, so parts of the story may be rough, and things like plot lines may not make as much sense as any of us would like. If all goes well, and I complete the challenge, I plan on going back through everything and trying to polish it up. In the meanwhile, thank you for reading and I hope I don’t disappoint.

The Fate Eater
What might a man really do if he found himself reincarnated into a fantasy world as a dragon prince? How would he come to terms with his new nature, his larger-than-life family, the agendas of warring factions, and the destiny he never asked for? This is a story that intends to defy some isekai tropes, but play into others. It's mainly about exploring a rich hand-crafted world, full of its own history and mysteries. Its characters have their own lives and aspirations, and our protagonist is but a piece of the greater tapestry. This story is not about right and wrong, or good and evil. It's about a dragon-man being tested by fate, power, and time. It's about what it's like to live as an outsider who lost their home. But perhaps the most central theme is freedom. What does freedom really mean? What will it cost and how much might one be willing to pay for it? Does it even truly exist? Let's find out together.
