《Pink Mage》139, Oops

Micky, now surrounded by humanoid monsters in a city of monsters with monster guards looking on, watching all of this go done as he is surrounded by monsters. The monsters themselves are twitchy, jittery. Micky can see that they have a lot of their monster side showing through. For example that one is a bug, probably a praying mantis, though it’s a dwarf. That one looks like its face is a cow, and is a centaur. While they are mostly humans there are some elves and dwarves mixed in with the occasional odd race out, like the one centaur.
They closed in as Micky backed up, Mags let out a growl, but Micky forced her behind him. He didn’t need her starting the inevitable. At least he could keep the moral high ground, fat lot it’ll do him. But should it ever return to a human court they will be able to persecute. It isn’t like he will survive the attack anyway.
One of them closed in for the kill. “Hello, have you heard of our lord and savior Xavior?” Asked the monster. Oh gods, kill him now! They were evangelists of some type.
“Uh...” Micky stated, eloquently.
“Well he placed this system in place, apparently an old system mind, anyway, a system so that you can take or receive.” Said the monster.
“Just get to the bashing already!” Stated a very twitchy comrade of the other monster as he stepped closer to Micky. “You wanna hit me?” Asked the monster.
Micky blinked. “You can hit me for a couple of Chips. Or I’ll hit you and give you a couple of bits. Your call, come on, which is it.” Said the monster in a faced paced rapid fire.
However, the guard moved towards his weapon and his companions all gave a sharp eyed stare. One of them, the one that talked first stretched out his hand and stopped the other monster from moving closer. It seemed they indeed had an idea what personal space was. However, it was something they saw in a pamphlet once, and said ‘Eh, something like that’ without getting the dimensions right.

Moving the other monster behind him the first monster stated “Sorry about my friend here, we aren’t wild monsters I assure you! We won’t harm you without consent in the slightest! Now, if you would be so kind as to hit me...” Stated the monster. Some of the other monsters seemed to take offense to him taking the lead. Micky just continued to back away.
Micky stated “Sorry, but I don’t want any.” One of the many universal statements for slamming the metaphorical door in someone’s face.
“I’m sure you understand… Please if you could...” Stated the monster, but that is when the guard chose to intervene.
“He stated he didn’t want any.” Said the guard as he interspersed himself between the crowd.
“I must apologise sir, but can’t you see we are about to make a transaction here?” Asked the seeming leader.
The guard stood firm and asked “Are you violating the law of consent?”
This seemed to cause the gathered monsters to immediately start to sweat and disperse “Sorry, we didn’t mean to disturb you.”
The guard turned to Micky. “Don’t worry, they didn’t mean you any harm. They aren’t wild monsters. They just wanted to get in some harmless violence. It’s an easy gig for you races really. But if you want to make a living through sexual favors I suggest you conform to a kink. While you can pretty much find any monster that will gratify you and themselves, after all if it is mutual, and monsters don’t have nearly as much hangups as you races do. But it’s easy to find somebody willing to satisfy that itch so you won’t be making money that way.” Stated the guard.
Micky replied “Uh, I will keep that in mind… Is that, uh, common?” gesturing at the skiddadiling monsters.
The guard looked at the monsters running away. “What, the younguns? Yeah, it’s common on the poor streets. They just begging for scraps. Might even be able to get a red chip off em’ if you give them enough, easy.” Said the guard.
“So they just go around… asking for a beating?” Said Micky.

“Ahh, your new here. Look it’s different than those human cities you’re probably used to. Here, we obey the rules and really only the races don’t. We monsters have certain needs, which I’m sure you can understand. Which is to fuck, fight and filch. The first two are legal in the city, while the last one is outlawed outside of battle. The [Dead] don’t have rights so you can take their stuff. However, that aint conducive to civilization mind, so that’s why we only allow people to use the chips for it.” Stated the guard. Micky left wondering wtf was going on… but at least he wasn’t going to be assaulted…
… well he spoke… thought, too soon. He was accosted like that several times more. Some more twitchy than others, some with guards around and some without. But the monsters never seemed to go past a certain point, it was oddly uniform.
This left Micky the time and ability to wander the city at his leisure. He was now somewhat more confident… at least when dealing with monsters.
When he saw his first race, a human, just a normal human with no haunting features and a bit of a rogueish side to him. Micky thought, ‘Hay, that guys a bit handsome, what’s he doing here?’ Micky found out when he put a knife to his throat from behind when he took his eyes off him for a second.
“The control token now! And no funny business. And all your chips. And I’ll be taking your gear too, strip for me.” He said that last bit while liking his lips. Micky didn’t trust it any more than he trusted th stranger with a knife to his throat… oh wait…
Well and [Accelerated] Mags was enough to put the man down before anything too severe could happen and [Regeneration] solved the scratch against his throat. He was just glad that his STH was high enough that when the man was knocked out his knife didn’t cut Micky’s throat.
“Thanks Mags.” Micky said. He was about to move away from the scene of the crime when a gaurd showed up. Micky sweated, this didn’t look good. “He attacked me, guard!” Stated Micky. Way to not look guilty.
The Guard looked the man over and say the knife in the other mans hand. Pocketing it he just shook his head “Races” He muttered.
“Hmm, we have received complaints about him already. Most end up [Dead] though, so you’re lucky. Well he is your conquest so here.” The guard said as he tossed a red chip toward Micky. It appeared he had gained another. That was after putting a drop of blood onto the chip and turning it red. It seemed they reacted to the blood somehow.
Mags growled. “Yes, your statement was what put it over the top. I trust a monster over one of the races. I don’t care if he takes offense to it.” Stated the officer.
Micky stood in a corner while the guard walked off with the unconscious man. Well this is awkward. Micky decided it was time to go and see if he could find an inn for the night.
It didn’t take him long to find something that wasn’t a ‘shared’ inn. Or more accurately a brothel, though the partner was usually free…
Although, Micky thought of returning. However, what would his mother think? Wait, what did he care what his mother thought… she might even encourage it… Father on the other hand. Well, what did he care about father thoughts and fears. But what about Prin?...
Safe to say he probably wasn’t going back… yet…
Micky got the meal of the day. It was apparently the gladiator of yesterday. He didn’t ask whether it was of the races or monsters. Neither option was good for Micky. But Micky was hungry. At least it wasn’t enough to force him to start monstrifying. It just had a little bit of excess mana that he would need to bleed off and purify. After listening in Micky decided to check out the arena later. Apparently that was the place to get your ‘fix’ most times, but the arena seemed to also be incredible for battles. After all, it was run by monsters...

How the Stars Turned Red
Announcement as of 05 July 2022: I've been diagnosed with some pretty severe nerve damage in my left arm, rendering me unable to write effectively, and as such this story is on hold until it is healed. I am so sorry, and I promise to get back to writing as soon as possible. In the latter half of the 3rd millennium CE, humanity has spread across the stars, inhabiting close to five-hundred worlds across the Orion Arm. Earth has become irrelevant, a historical has-been. The galactic map is dominated by two mega-factions, both controlling vast amounts of territories either through direct control or through their many allies and treaty signatories. The Kingdom of Aurora is the political and economic hegemon despite consisting of only seven inhabited worlds; their strength lies in the Royal Union, an interstellar commonwealth composing an internal market and a common defence pact. These member worlds are myriad and varied, culturally as well as politically, but they all flock to the same banner. The Independent Systems Alliance, spearheaded by the Republic of Elysium, is the ascendant challenger to Aurora and the Union. A pseudo-federal multi-system polity, the Alliance economy and military is rapidly expanding, but at the cost of effective democratic and meritocratic involvement by its people. However, with two superpowers as this, chafing along a common border, and with a constant clamour of polemics, both sides have become convinced the other is constantly preparing for war and are on the look-out for any perceived weakness in their opponent. The predictable result is a huge arms race and a cold war spreading across the stars, requiring only a spark to set the galaxy aflame. Drawn into this game of high stakes are ordinary men and women, their peaceful lives, hopes, and aspirations swallowed by the vortex of conflict and distrust. This is their story. Cover art by Rhodex Designs (FB). Hope you like long chapters and adjectives. Note: English is not my first language. Another story set in the same universe, written by a good friend
