《Farmer: The first》What are you

The elf smiled as she saw Jason's reaction, but she was a little surprised at the reaction of the fox.
"Is there any problem with the ' Spirit Contract'? " she asked both of them, and the first to answer was Jason who was still surprised at the notifications.
"I.... don't know? Is it normal to gain so much from just signing a spirit contract?" said Jason, hesitating a little to tell her about what he had just gained.
"It's pretty normal to gain 'Spirit Transfer' and 'Lesser Darling of the Forest' from signing a spirit contract with a forest spirit. Now you will be able to stay inside a dungeon for a greater amount of time by using the skill, and so you will be able to raise your level faster."
"That so..." said Jason and he stared at the fox who was also staring at him. He could notice the surprise on its furry face.
"Yes, now I suggest that you go back and get those people you talked about.
I'll also be going somewhere for the rest of the day so you'll be alone with the spirit. In that time you better fix your difference's , get yourself to use the skill so you can get a hang of it, and don't say anything to those people. You can do that , can't you?"
"Yeah....." answered Jason with a tired sigh. He had had a hard time when he had to live with his sister, but now it was much worse.
' Well, at least I don't have to cook for myself, because I can't cook for shit.' thought Jason as the elf disappeared into the forest and he looked up again. He admired the treehouse for some time , but soon he realized something important and he understood that he had been had.

'That elf, really knows how to get on my nerves. First with the hawk and now with the treehouse. How am I to climb it without some kind of ladder?!' thought Jason as he thought about this completely forgetting about the fox who was still staring at him. This continued for a while, until he finally remembered and reluctantly asked the fox.
"Hey, do you have any way to climb this tree? Is there some kind of ladder around here?"
(......
What are you? What is with your class and race?) spoke the fox directly to Jason's mind, making him startled. Jason froze in place for a second before he understood what had just happened.
"What are you talking about?"said Jason trying to dismiss the question and immediately after he tried to grab the fox , but it was to quick and it escaped to the side.
"Come back here....I'm not going to hurt you." said Jason will the friendliest face he could muster, but the fox didn't believe him at all.
(Hmph, I'm not going to fall for such an obvious trick.....) said the fox as it raised it's green bushy tail (You, what are you? Are you some kind of spirit yourself which is possessing this human body? Or are you some kind unknown subspecies of human?)
".......
I'm neither, I'm just a normal human." answered Jason as he coldly stared at the fox in front of him.
(Liar! No human Farmer of your level could have that kind of status. You definitely are not a normal human. Speak...)
Jason crossed his hands and began to think what to do, while in the meantime keeping the fox busy.
"Why should I? What do I gain from saying anything to you? "
(Fool, you don't understand anything, do you? When the soul contract is made not only do you gain the ' Spirit Transfer' skill and the title , but I also gain something in return.)

Jason's eyes opened wider and wider until he finally spoke "You do?"
(Yes, I do, and I've also gained something from that.
Usually I wouldn't gain anything from a human or even any of the normal races. The only races capable of causing me to gain a title are demons, dragons or other stronger spirits.
So, what are you as you're definitely not a human.)
After those words, silence ensued amd only after a while did Jason finally give his answer.
"I'm just a human Farmer, is it that hard to believe? " said Jason smilingly as he approached the fox, but with each step he took forward the fox moved back the same distance.
"Look, forest spirit or whatever you are. I'm a human and a Farmer, nothing more and nothing less."
(But you clearly..
"No buts! Im a human, got it!
Now, how about we have a long talk about this and then we will figure out what to do? What do you say?"
(Agreed....
..............
After a little of talking from a distance , Jason learned from the fox that now that they were in a spirit contract they could see their partners status, thought they couldn't see what kind of skills or titles the other had.
' Status' said Jason while focusing on the fox and it's status appeared before him.
Name N/A(Spirit) Class Lesser Forest Spirit
LV 3 Strength 4 Vitality 6 Dexterity 5 Spirit 10 Skills 3 Titles 2 HP 58/60 SP 95/100 STP 0
' It's feels just like my status page, but it is definitely the status of the fox. It's stats are all over the place, but what surprises me is how high it's Spirit is. Well, it is a spirit after all , but having ten points in Spirit at level 3 is a little bit.....
(So, you have saw my status then? What do you think about it?) said the fox, still keeping a distance from Jason.
"Not bad, your Spirit though was higher than my explanation, at ten points. Maybe it's you who is something else.....
(Haah, the status doesn't lie. It only reflects what you are and what you'll become, but you....
Your status is something unknown, something that shouldn't be possible, but here you are. )
"Yeah, here I am.... hurrayyy! Now what?!" said Jason who was still thinking about the spirit contract and about the elf.
' So she knew that something like this would happen, but she didn't warn me. She clearly didn't want me to know about this.....or is this another one of her tricks?
Either way, I'm stuck with this contract for now.'
(I'm saying that we work together. I'll keep your secrets and you'll help me in getting stronger as a spirit. It's not going to be easy, but we both can definitely try to become stronger.) said the fox with conviction in it's eyes as it twitched it's nose.
"Heh, hahahahah..........
Mr Foxy Spirit, it seems that I have no choice but to agree to something, again. I just hope that this doesn't become a normal occurrence." laughingly said Jason , but he coldy though of how to kill the fox. He thought was surprised at himself for thinking something like killing so calmly, and came to the conclusion that he was beginning to feel little remorse.
' Maybe I'll just go with what the fox is saying......

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx.
