“Seems like the heaven has smiled at me and I catches you up. I don’t care if you are already dead or not, I will still cut you to pieces!” Mao Qingyu sneered evilly as he wielded his Twin Dragon Staff on his right-hand.
Whoosh!
Mao Qingyu brandished his staff and then smashed the head of the staff towards the head of Chen Yun who couldn’t move anymore!
Bang!
…
..
.
Clink!
.
..
…
Before Mao Qingyu could smash his staff towards Chen Yun’s head. It was as if the time has stopped and in the middle between Chen Yun’s head and Mao Qingyu’s staff. A clinking sound resonated.
Mao Qingyu was shocked but quickly realized. He swiftly taps the ground distancing himself ten meters away from half-dead Chen Yun.
Crackle!
After Mao Qingyu left where the location of Chen Yun. A burst of elemental energy of flame erupted ahead of Chen Yun. Forming into a figure of a person standing while holding a simple red colored spear on his right hand and a hood was on his head.
“Mo Yonggan! Why did you interfere?” Mao Qingyu angrily rebuked the person named Mo Yonggan who suddenly appears.
Mo Yonggan slowly removed his hood that veils his head while his eyes emitted a light like flames that stare at Mao Qingyu who is agitated.
Though he stared at Mo Yonggan he didn’t reply to his question instead he looked at the near-dead Chen Yun on the ground.
Sigh~
He neared Chen Yun and kneeled one foot. He turned Chen Yun’s body and flicked his right hand. A medicinal pill appears above his palm which he directly put it into Chen Yun’s mouth.
After he had taken care Chen Yun. He stood up and faced Mao Qingyu once again. He said, “Well, he’s my friend and his father was my father’s blood brother. There’s no way that I shouldn’t interfere between you two.” And shrugged his shoulders.
‘Fck!’ Mao Qingyu could only cursed.
Mo Yonggan was already at the peak of Earthen Realm so there’s no way he could retaliate against him even he will be going all out.
“He contracted the beast that I am chasing recently. I lost the trace of the pesky beast but I didn’t think that he got it. That’s why I was infuriated because it was mine, not his!” Mao Qingyu still wanted to argue against Mo Yonggan through verbal.
Mo Yonggan moved his left hand towards his left ear and put it inside and slowly twist it and said, “Then let’s just say you’re unlucky. Maybe next time it will be your luck but not today.”
“You!” Mao Qingyu pointed his index finger towards Mo Yonggan in anger.
“What? Wanna fight?” Mo Yonggan asked while his face turned stern, his red flaming eyes turned brighter with a hint killing intent.
“…”
‘Hmph!’
Mao Qingyu only snorted and he left the seventh level. He then proceeded inside the path leading towards the eight level of the Fiery Pillar Tree.

After Mao Qingyu left the area, is also the time when Mo Yonggan left his gaze to Mao Qingyu and shifted towards the lying Chen Yun, and then he said, “Tsk if I didn’t come on time I don’t know what will happen to you.”
He shook his head for a moment and he sat on the ground beside Chen Yun. With a flick of his hand, the spear he was holding quickly turned bright red and rushed towards his red-colored ring wore by his middle finger on his right hand.
After that, silence plagued the area but Mo Yonggan didn’t mind the atmosphere flowing around him but he was even comfortable with it.
It takes three hours before the silence has been broken by a groan.
Urgh…
Chen Yun groaned before he started to raise his eyelids that he hardly open it. It was like he was carrying heavy things that he couldn’t help but close it back.
“Don’t force yourself yet. Though you are now fully healed, your energy has not been even regained a bit energy that you couldn’t open your eyes. It was still okay, after one hour your energy will be back again. Just rest for now.” The voice of Mo Yonggan echoed on Chen Yun’s ears which he then followed.
The serene environment returned once again after that. And one hour had passed just like that. Chen Yun opened his eyes which he just easily lifts it up and was way different before he first woke up.
The first thing that greets him was the back of Mo Yonggan who is standing five meters away from him. Chen Yun quietly lifts his upper body and sit upright.
“Are you feeling now?” Mo Yonggan asked but he didn’t turn around.
“Yes, yes, I am fine. Anyways who are you mister?” Chen Yun politely said and asked.
“Don’t call me mister, Chen Yun, I’m just a month older than you.” Mo Yonggan answered while he turned around and landed his gaze towards Chen Yun and their eyes met. “Did you not know me after that fight with Mao Qingyu?” he added.
When Chen Yun was asked by the person in front of him he quickly scanned the fragments of memory inside his head. From the looks of it, the person in front of him seems familiar. With a red color hair, pointy brows like swords. A pair of eyes that could pierce the barriers of this world. He has a square shaped face that he looks like a box headed person.
After several milliseconds of scanning that is almost the entirety of the old ‘Chen Yun’s’ memory, he finally understood and know that the person in front of him named Mo Yonggan.
Mo Yonggan was his bosom buddy when they are born until they grew up that even them at the same time started cultivating their respective techniques. Unfortunately, Chen Yun clearly lacks in talent than Mo Yonggan. The old ‘Chen Yun’ was frustrated about it that he almost didn’t want to meet Mo Yonggan again.

But right now that the new Chen Yun has entered his body, it is a different story.
“Yeah, I nearly forgot you Mo Yonggan… Square-headed man…” Chen Yun joked at him.
Whoosh!
A swift flash of red light rushed directly towards Chen Yun but Chen Yun though a bit slow has successfully evaded the attack.
Whowowowowhoosh!
But before Chen Yun could release a sigh of relief the red flying object suddenly returns back rushing behind him!
Chen Yun turns around and was shocked to see it coming. He quickly laid flat on the ground evading just a hairbreadth away.
Pwosh!
Mo Yonggan received the flying object nimbly and masterfully. The flying red object was typically the ordinary red colored spear.
Chen Yun stood up and gaze Mo Yonggan he then said, “Yonggan bro, it was just a joke would please appease your anger for your old friend here?”
When he said those words a bead of sweat in a large quantity was on his forehead that his face was forced when he asked appeasing Mo Yonggan’s anger.
Sigh~
“If you were the same level with me I don’t think that I could win against you.” Mo Yonggan said plainly.
Chen Yun was surprised when he heard those words coming from Mo Yonggan. He replied, “How could you say that? With your talent that is incomparable from other geniuses, how could I be a matched against you?”
Mo Yonggan walked towards him instead of replying him. Swaying the clothes from the gust of wind, wielding the spear on his right hand.
When his distance from Chen Yun was about five meters he then said, “It’s because you could evade my sneak attacks…”
…
Weng! Weng!
Two people appeared in the path that leads towards the eight level. They were Mo Yonggan and Chen Yun, but Chen Yun right now was still in a daze thinking, ‘How the hell could he say that it was his trump card.’
On the other hand, Mo Yonggan appears to be in silence not even batting an eye towards Chen Yun which is the right thing, he’s not a gay after all.
Mo Yonggan moved forward to the right leaving behind the dazed Chen Yun.
When he was at the foot of the stair, he turned and stared at the dazed Chen Yun, he then stated, “Hey, would you just stood there for a day?”
Like an alarm clock, the voice of Mo Yonggan wakes up the dazed Chen Yun which he hurriedly turned to look where the location of the owner of the voice came from.
“Yes, yes, yes I’m coming.” Chen Yun hurriedly said as he moved quickly to him.
In a moment, when Mo Yonggan wanted to step on the first step of the stair, a sudden flash rushed on Chen Yun which he quickly yelled towards Mo Yonggan, “Wait!”
Mo Yonggan was an abrupt halt while his right foot was five centimeters above the step.
“What?” Mo Yonggan asked.
Chen Yun didn’t reply his question but he quickly blinked his eyes until his vision turned black and white while a path that retains its color revealed. The path which retained its color was at the left side not where Mo Yonggan was at!
“Hey Chen Yun, if you won’t answer me then I will go ahead of you.” Mo Yonggan irritatedly said.
“Don’t!”
Boom! Roar!
When Mo Yonggan stepped on the step of the stair, it suddenly exploded blowing away Mo Yonggan who was recently irritated. The sounds were mixed with explosion and draconic roars. A sudden manifestation of dragon appears on the right stair’s entirety, changing all the stairs into a long and large dragon staring at the flying Mo Yonggan before it dissipates.
Whoosh!
Chen Yun appeared behind Mo Yonggan, catching him safely, but the force was too strong that Chen Yun’s force couldn’t fight it off.
Bang!
Chen Yun and Mo Yonggan were nailed to the wall of the path. It takes five seconds before they fell on the ground with a ‘thud’.
Chen Yun quickly stood up and quickly scanned Mo Yonggan’s body if there are any injuries inflicted into his body. To his delight, he realized that attack recently didn’t even hurt Mo Yonggan even a bit.
Mo Yonggan suddenly opened his eyes. He stood up a while later and tapped his clothes cleaning all the dust and particles on his clothes before saying, “Let’s go.”
Chen Yun was amazed by Mo Yonggan’s action as if it was nothing to him. He felt that he wanted to do such thing too!
Without staying any longer, they walked towards the left stairs leaving the path and head to the eight level.
…
Weng! Weng!
At the eight level, two people appear at the exit. Mo Yonggan and Chen Yun attentively looked at the area but was shocked to see a large number of Guardian Ifrits!
There are ten Guardian Ifrits all in all roaming around the bough. Each Guardian Ifrits was holding a large shield and greatswords. Guardian Ifrit’s height was twenty meters with their sword with a length of ten meters and the shield seven meters in length and five meters in width.
Mo Yonggan quickly flicked his hand and a plain red spear was on his hand and said, “I want to fight those ifrits, you?”
Chen Yun was shocked and spoke on his mind, ‘Battle maniac and he was like his father indeed!’
“I don’t want to, you think that with my cultivation base I could stand a chance against that demon beast?” Chen Yun asked Mo Yonggan.
“Well you are correct, then what’s your plan?” Mo Yonggan asked.
“Let’s proceed to the ninth level.” Chen Yun flatly replied.
“Okay,” Mo Yonggan quickly answered.
Haaaa!
As they started walking towards the entrance, a shout was heard ahead from the ten Guardian Ifrits!
Chen Yun’s face suddenly changed because the owner of that voice was Zhong Yi!

The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
