You listen to the rumble of the ruby for a long time. You feel the pull of its call: to know how your equipment works, not simply how to use it. But ultimately the croon of the sapphire wins out. Who cares if you know how your equipment works if you can simply throw money at the right person to explain things to you in a way that you will understand. That desire to know mutes itself to a good fellowship with the people who do understand such things. It does help to treat them well for their work on your behalf, after all.
You grasp the sapphire firmly in your hands, and the other gems vanish like smoke on the breeze. You can feel your shadow detach itself from your feet, floating off to form your Nemesis. You know that you will be seeing It sometime in the future.
Two new objects slowly materialize before you: a goblet to your right and a book to your left. You consider them the same way you considered the gems,as you feel that they represent the next step in your life. Well, your life before you were someone important.
You shake your head to clear it of distracting thoughts and consider the book. "Savant" echoes in the rustle of pages turning. Learning, logic, knowledge is power. Learning would dominate your early life, strengthening your mind at the cost of you body.
You turn and consider the goblet. "Vaunted" resonates in the clamor of voices at yet another party. Mixed drinks, the smell of recreational narcotics, keeping your wit while others lose their inhibitions. Partying would dominate your early life, leading to an increased fellowship and tolerance for intoxicants, at the cost of duller perceptions and a tiny piece of your soul.
