《Drunk Dungeon》Chapter 8

Robert had a serious problem when it came to monsters.
It seemed like every time some creature was summoned, they either A) were useless for anything that wasn't food. Or B) were so powerful that it was impossible to control them.
Robert's current situation was an example. Their monster, the Scythe Dragon Fly. Had completely overrun the Dungeon.
Around twenty of them flew around the first two dozen or so feet inside the Dungeon. While around half a dozen more were growing inside fleshy pods stuffed with Drunk magical energy, holding the monsters at various stages of maturity.
There were probably more outside if Robert had to hazard a guess. But even with all of this, the damn beast inside Roberts Dungeon at fifty feet away from the entrance. Was still untouched. That may have been due to Robert having not told them to attack. But it was also due to (which Robert didn't know about) the vast amount of magical energy naturally pouring out of the beast.
Which had intimidated the monsters enough to not try anything.
So Robert was forced to continue to feed the beast, with it growing increasingly resilient to the magic energy that resided in each of Robert's rabbits that it ate.
Robert was contemplating what else they should do for dealing with the beast before an almost forgotten voice resonated with Robert.
"Robert, help!" Vocal shouted.
She had returned! Robert thought. Robert immediately asked Vocal, "where have you been?! Did something happen?! What help do you need?!"
"Don't you see the monsters at your Dungeon entrance!" Vocal said.
Robert immediately turned their attention towards the Scythe Dragon Flies near the entrance. Sure enough, Vocal could be seen, surrounded by several of them.
Just as the first one raised one of its legs to cut through Vocal, Robert ordered the bug to stop. It didn't.

It swung its blade straight at Vocal, she narrowly dodged out of the way of the blade. Running right into the second bug. Just as it raised the blade on its face to attack Vocal from behind. Robert let out a scream of magical power.
"Stop!" Robert said. The blast of power wrapping around all of the bugs and even slightly around the snake.
The bugs stopped their attack, Vocal stayed still for several seconds before she collapsed on the floor.
"Are you okay?" Robert asked.
"Yeah, why didn't you do that sooner?!" Vocal asked.
"This was my first time" Robert explained. "I barely even know how I created these guys," Robert said. Mentally gesturing towards the bugs around Vocal.
"Fine. Anyway, we have several minutes left."
"For what?" Robert asked.
"For the adventuring time about to raid us, I need to be near your core," Vocal replied as she made her way towards Robert.
"Um, about that?"
"What?" Vocal asked.
Melken had nearly fallen on his ass when that blast of magical energy had been unleashed.
A wave of power had been sent out, telling him to stop. It didn't specify, but Melken had been on edge about being killed in a surprise monster attack. So that command had altered itself because of Melken's current expectancy.
So it had stopped his heart for a second.
It had only lasted for so long before Melken's body had fought the magic spell off. But it had taken some more elf ear sun god magic to get his heart to start up.
But now thanks to that little incident, Melken had a rough level of the magic-user involved. It seemed they were low level, seeing as how easy Melken had fought the basic spell off.

But that still meant they were dangerous. Low-level magic users often got themselves killed if untrained, mostly due to them not knowing the powers they could control and subsequently using them and causing a chain reaction.
Melken had once met a sound mage who had let out a massive roar to scare off a pack of lions, said roar had caused a rockslide, killing him.
Melken slowly made his way towards where the magic had come from. His eyes widening as he saw nearly several dozen bunny corpses. Each one holding a shiny pod filled with brown colored magic.
That's when Melken felt a blade slice into his ribs.
Robert watched with rapt attention as seven of their monsters charged at the man right outside the Dungeon in a swarm.
The first one at the head used the blade on its nose to tear into the man's side. Blood spilling out of the wound, the poison it wielded sinking deep into him and immediately going to work.
The man immediately brought out a knife and used it to cut the heads of the next two monsters charging at him. A wave of smokey magic along with a hazy blue covering the blade as it killed the two large bugs.
The four bugs right after it quickly charged forward, enraged at the deaths of their sisters.
The man dodged to the side, the sword moving in a slow but still quick pattern. As if this was a dance, and Robert was the audience.
A tornado of magic quickly came forth. Bulldozing through the four bugs with a crunch, exoskeleton, wings, and blood flying everywhere.
The gore turning a pale blue before shattering.
The last bug, the only one who had landed a hit on him widened its eyes. The already present hate in them coursing into a new level, magical energy poured out and wrapped around the dragonfly in a half-hazard way.
Then it launched itself forward with blinding speed.
The man barely dodged the bug, all of its sharp limbs flying out as it turned into a tornado of death. Both of them immediately engaged in a vicious duel. Sparks flowed between them as they parried, cut, and struck at each other.
The battle was enrapturing. Magical energy released around the bug, slowly lessening as the battle wound on. While the man grunted as the poison continued to tear its way into his body.
Ultimately, Robert's creation lost. With a single stroke, the man shattered the magical armor that was constructed around it. The bug didn't even need a finishing blow. Its body collapsing, its limbs and head breaking apart from the torso before collapsing and hitting the dirt.
The man looked at his fallen foe with a single, distasteful glare before running into Roberts Dungeon.

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx.
