《Life of the dark god》Chapter 38 Preparing a festival for the king
Advertisement
The 1st obstacle was the entrance fee. I had to pay for my 2 “slaves” and because slaves were only for rich people, I had to pay 1 gold for each of them. It was daylight robbery, but luckily, due to my time as an adventurer, 2 gold coins were no problem for me.
There was a lot commotion in the city and I had no idea why. I wanted to ask someone, but everyone was too busy preparing for something. To me it looked like some kind of fest. Sarah and Nala just followed me quietly. They were unfamiliar with the city, so it didn’t surprise me.
“Damn everyone is ignoring me. Perhaps Takeshi knows something.”(Me)
“Who?”(Sarah)
“Never mind, you’ll be meeting him sooner or later. Just follow me to school for now.”(Me)
We went straight to the school. We didn’t stop at any shop, not for clothing, neither for sweets or other food. Probably, mostly because of me, because the 2 of them kept following me with their mouths open and just waited for me to allow them to get something.
“Perhaps next time, but for now I have to know the situation.”(Me)
As if I didn’t know any better, their heads went down.
“I promise that as soon as we finish, we’ll come back and you can buy whatever you want.”(Me)
“Thank you Master.”(Nala)
“Thank you teacher.”(Sarah)
“Sigh.”(Me)
I didn’t know if it was all an act, but in the end they got what they wanted. Shortly after we arrived at the school’s gate. The same guard as always was standing in front of it. Sarah ran ahead of us.
“Hello Mr. Guard.”(Sarah)
“Haha. A hello to you too little lady, but please call me Vincent.”(Vincent)
“Hello Mr. Vincent.”(Sarah)
We caught up to them shortly after.
“Good day Vincent.”(Me)
“Sigh. I see, the little lady is together with you.”(Vincent)

“Is there something wrong with Master?”(Nala)
“Another 1? No certainly not. He’s just… Let’s say he is kind of a troublemaker.”(Vincent)
It hurt me a little that even a guard categorized me as something like a troublemaker.
“So, Hikaru, both listing as slaves again?”(Vincent)
“Huh? Again?”(Sarah)
“Master what’s the meaning of this?”(Nala)
“Both of you shut up, I’ll tell you later.”(Me)
They didn’t want to, but they kept quiet for the rest of my talk with Vincent.
“Yes please. She’s Sarah and he’s Nala.”(Me)
“Noted down. Did you buy them for the upcoming fest?”(Vincent)
“Just to be clear, I didn’t buy any slaves. It’s another connection.”(Me)
“Ahh. I understand you don’t need to tell me more.”(Vincent)
He completely misunderstood it.
“Sigh. Never mind. By the way I just came back from a quest and have no idea what all this fest thing is about.”(Me)
“Hmm. A few days ago, someone became a court magician. Now there are 4 of them. And because the king wanted to celebrate it, he will travel through the land and every city shall prepare a fest for him.”(Vincent)
“Is a court magician that important?”(Me)
“Yes! As I said, there are currently only 4 court magicians. This title indicates that they are the officially strongest mages the whole country has to offer. Their authority only lies beneath the royal family and the 3 heavenly generals. I heard that he is quite young too.”(Vincent)
“3 heavenly generals?”(Me)
“Sigh. They are the top of the army, the heavenly is another title added to their name. What is this academy teaching? Aren’t you even learning basic knowledge and common sense?”(Vincent)
“Thanks for explaining to me. We’ll be going now. Have a nice day.”(Me)
We passed the gate and left Vincent behind. I could only hear him sighing a few more times after that.

“Master!”(Nala)
“Yes?”(Me)
“Tell me now, honestly. What was that bringing another slave about?”(Nala)
“Sigh. Actually you should know that already. Use that brain of yours.”(Me)
“Huh?”(Nala)
“I told you I’m gathering young talents. The last 1 just happened to travel to the Dark Continent from my room.”(Me)
“And why are we all listed as slaves?”(Sarah)
“Only students, teachers and their slaves are allowed in this academy. I don’t want to cause any trouble yet, so bear with it.”(Me)
Both were more or less satisfied with my answers. Before anything else, I guided the 2 of them to my room. It was noon of the 7th day of the week, so all of the other students were probably out in the city. Because of that, I avoided a lot of unnecessary attention.
“Stay here and wait until I’m back. It won’t take that long.”(Me)
“Are you leaving us behind teacher?”(Sarah)
“What should we do in the meantime?”(Nala)
“Hmm.”(Me)
I needed only a few seconds until I came up with a brilliant idea.
“You are not staying here because I leave you behind, but in order to train.”(Me)
I drew weak gravity runes on both of their clothes. Their legs instantly gave in and they fell to the ground.
“Not this again Master.”(Nala)
“Don’t worry, it’s a lot weaker than before. If you are able to stand until I’m back, you succeeded with the 1st step of your training.”(Me)
“Why do we need to do that?”(Sarah)
“Basics are important and the foundation of your magic is your body.”(Me)
I just said what came to my mind. I made up a story to motivate them to do physical training. In fact, my statement wasn’t that far from reality.
I left my room. I went to Takeshi’s room, but he wasn’t there. Next I went to the park. There weren’t many places I know of, but the highest chance to meet Takeshi was by going to the park. Unfortunately, he wasn’t there.
I gave up on the thought of finding him and headed to the guild building first. I planned to finish the quest first and start my information gathering afterwards.
There weren’t many people at the guild building. It felt a lot bigger than last time. I went to the counter and the receptionist welcomed me.
“Welcome student, what can I do for you?”(Receptionist)
“I want to finish this quest.”(Me)
I gave him the quest paper.
“Certainly. Scouting out this dungeon was it, right?”(Receptionist)
“Yes.”(Me)
“And? What did you find?”(Receptionist)
“Ahm.”(Me)
I hadn’t thought of what to say yet. I didn’t plan to tell him that I already cleared it.
“It was already cleared when I arrived there.”(Me)
“Oh my, were you able to entre?”(Receptionist)
“Yes.”(Me)
“Were there any remains of monsters or treasures?”(Receptionist)
“No.”(Me)
“That’s unfortunately. Well nevertheless, you finished the quest. You’ll receive 20 contribution points. Congratulations on succeeding in your 1st quest.”(Receptionist)
“T… Thank you.”(Me)
I was wondering why he believed all of it.
“Yo! It seems like you also just came back.”(Takeshi)
He greeted me from the door.
“How was your quest?”(Takeshi)
“The dungeon was already cleared before I came.”(Me)
“Hahaha. Same as me then.”(Takeshi)
Takeshi handed in his quest, as well as his report.
“Let’s visit the city and talk there. You probably already know about the festival.”(Takeshi)
“Not much, but fine.”(Me)
“I’ll tell you everything I know later. Let’s go visit all the shops 1st.”(Takeshi)
“Alright. No, wait.”(Me)
“What is it?”(Takeshi)
“We need to go to my room 1st.”(Me)
“Why?”(Takeshi)
“You’ll know when we get there.”(Me)

Paths of the Chosen (Rewritten, Revised, and Reinvigorated)
Daniel Stewart was chosen to alpha test a brand new Immersive VR game, "The Realms". What he doesn't know is that he has also been Chosen by one of the Powers of a far-off world, and is now a pawn in a game much bigger than any he thought he would ever participate in. Will he survive and thrive in this strange new world, or will he stumble and fall, shattered by the ambitions of another? Does he have what it takes to walk the Paths of the Chosen?---Inspired by the Chaos Seeds novels, TheDespaxas's The Gamer, and a wide variety of games and books, although the world, characters, and systems are my own. Expect high fantasy, magic, combat and intrigue, love and loss, grief and passion. This story is intended for adult audiences and contains explicit sexual content, profanity, and violence (including sexual violence, although not by the protagonist and not as a focus of the story). Chapters with such content will be clearly marked, and all explicit sexual content will be behind spoiler tags. I prefer my stories to have happy endings, and especially in these uncertain times, I feel that it is important to maintain hope. While this tale will reach some dark places, I promise to you that, when all is said and done, the villains will be justly punished and the heroes will prevail and prosper. Remember: it is darkest before dawn, but dawn always comes. Please note also that although this story does not have the [Harem] tag, it does have an extremely slow build into a polyamorous relationship. Additionally, starting with Champion (book two of the series), the [Multiple Lead Characters], [Female Lead], and [Non-Human Lead] tags would also apply to varying degrees. This is a complete, ground-up rewrite of the original Paths of the Chosen, following feedback from here and elsewhere. It is now written in the third-person limited omniscient perspective and in the past tense. In addition, while the major plot beats are unchanged, most of what comes between them has been reconsidered and rewritten, with pacing and characterization as a special focus.---Update schedule: 2 chapters per week (Monday and Thursday), not counting bonus chapters. Chapter length is roughly 2,500 words on average, +/- 1,000 words. Chapters with explicit content tend to be longer so that they are still worth reading for those who would prefer a fade to black. --- Cover art by Agri Karuniawan (@artofagri). Ars Magica
Our vision comes back into focus. Our eyes, while being able to perceive the immediate surroundings, still leave us with our minds uncomprehending towards what is actually occurring. Sure, there are definitive things that we can focus on, like the fact that we're either out upon the open sea or the open ocean, there not being much of a difference with no land in sight, as well as the fact that we appear to be upon a haphazardly constructed metal boat, whose seams are barely able to keep a hold of themselves in the crashing waves. However, that does not let us understand what exactly is causing the waves in the first place. If we were to rewind time, we'd find ourselves upon a calm sea under a peaceful sky with the only difference, being a small whirlpool that would be the precursor towards this uproar around the boat. Lightning flashes in the sky, with no clouds being near, and anyone actually manning the boat has either died towards the cause of the smashing tides in the first place, or are fighting amongst the flashes of lightning, all while trying not to become devoured, demolished, and utterly decimated by the beast roiling in the whirling waves. To better understand exactly what is happening here, there is one singular event that needs to be understood, that needs to be explained, and that is the arrival of a creature named Dave. Stepping back from current events and going towards this creature's first appearance in the world, we begin to hear the sound of water slowly dripping across rocky ground. The cavern is utterly silent except for this one constant, its cause feeding channels downwards, sloping towards cracks in the rubble along the floor from broken stalagmites and stalactites. And there, lying on top of something which had fallen over recently, judging from its cracks, is a person, the creature named Dave. His form is fast asleep, either from the impact or from an intoxication, judging from the smell upon its breath. A bright light suffuses into it for a second, giving life towards the pale skin, before it slowly dies down back to the comfortable black of the cave that it's within. Before this moment in time, Dave did not exist in the physical world. At least, not in the reality that he finds himself born into. We do not know whether or not his existence is simply a cosmic joke, or something that is being played out on purpose. All that we do know, is that one moment, the body was not in the cave, and simply formed in the next. The actual earliest time that we know Dave exists, is the interpolation of the memories of J-209, which we'll begin looking into shortly to gain context towards the coming narrative that is being written and hastily trying to keep itself written. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warning: This story has several things which might turn its readers away. The first is that this story has shifting points of perspective. Don't worry about that previous sentence too much though, as the main character will always have a first person perspective associated with them. However, any other character from which we're viewing the story from will either be in third-person, as we are not necessarily in their shoes at the moment, or in first person, given that the narrator is an actual physical presence within the story. For the most part, chapters will be self-contained with their perspectives, so there will not be an abundance of switching perspectives within the same chapter. The most that an average reader would have to worry about is the fact that perspectives can switch between chapters. The second thing is that the main character is a bit on the 'special' side of things. He's not exactly mentally there most of the time, so there will be some times that his personality or his thoughts do not actively align with his actions. The third, and final thing of importance, is the fact that past the first couple of chapters, nothing has been planned in advance. There are arcs and plots that I want to do, want to implement, or have already been set into motion from our main character's introduction to the world, but the method that I use for my story writing and generating leads towards a bit more random chance being enabled. Basically...there's a lot of dice rolling behind the scenes. To not complicate the story further than its regular LitRPG elements, the rolls will not be publicly available. However, there will be knowledge within the author's notes on whether or not there were positive or negative critical rolls that had occurred within the chapter. You have been warned. Updates: Mondays & Fridays (Schedule permitting) Typical Chapter Length: (2,000-3,000)
